Here's where we are as of July 20th 2007.

Chris Mihm has signed to a 5M 2-yr deal with the 2nd year being a player option.

Derek Fisher will sign today, the deal reported at 14M 3-yrs.

Lamar Odom WAS ALMOST TRADED for Charlotte's Gerald Wallace.

Odom will go to New Jersey, Richard Jefferson to Charlotte.

Jordan reportedly balked thus the deal failed.

I ask the question WHY?

WHY trade Lamar Odom if not for a name like JO or KG?

Is this logical?

Does it make even make any sense?

Gerald Wallace's salary distribution:

$7,500,000 - 2007

$8,287,500 - 2008

$9,075,000 - 2009

$9,862,500 - 2010

$10,650,000 - 2011

$11,437,500 - 2012 player option

The ONLY logical explanation I can think of would have to be for salary purposes and to clear cap space to accept a higher salaried player.

This trade suggests that we will clear 6M of cap room this year and receive a 6M trade exception usable for ONE YEAR while replacing Odom for a player like Wallace who does almost the same things as him. In turn, we can now trade Kwame + Bynum + 6M trade exception for JO. Indiana receives Bynum and Kwame's expiring plus 6M cap relief.

In my opinion, this is a genius move to maneuver a JO trade in the works. Instead of sending Odom and Bynum to Indy for JO, we instead trade Kwame, Odom and Bynum for JO and Wallace. Not bad, really.

TRADE #1

Odom to New Jersey.

Richardson to Charlotte.

Wallace to LA.

TRADE #2

Bynum

Kwame

Sasha

B. Cook

Crittenton

6M trade exception

-- for --

JO

Foster

Diogu

Farmar / Fisher

Kobe / Evans

Wallace / Walton

JO / Diogu / Radmanovic

Mihm / Foster / Turiaf

Can you imagine? How I wish the deal did not fail...

But there is still hope. We can still trade Odom straight up for Wallace.

Make it happen Mitch!

I think we should use the fact that NJ likes Odom, and that the Wiz are looking to deal Navarro, to pull off the following trade:

In my proposal Minnesota would get Bynum (a young stud with potential), a 9 million dollar expiring contract in Kwame, a euro-league star in Navarro, and two other young players in Daniels and Songalia. How is that getting "ripped so bad"? If he walks next year they get nothing. Everything I read says they are looking for young players and expiring contracts. They have no interest in Odom due to his age and contract.

how could this be a stupid trade??? we get 6 mil cap relief for a younger layer who scores more and gets about the same number of rebounds. plus with fish coming back we dont need odem to handle the ball anymore, or his assists. this would have been a brilliant move by mitch. plus one of the things stopping us getting kg was odems contract, wallace has a better contract then lamar, 2 years 25 million is way to much for lamar and minny knows that. i hope we can find a way to make this happen.

i rather have wallace than lamar. Lamar should be playing better than he is. up to 19 and 10 with over 3 asst. he can do it too.

Lamar Odom will be good in NJ where there can be no pressure to score. More so in Charlotte as well where JRich is the man. Wallace will be good for LA. Mitch knows what he is doing...

is gerald wallace a upgrade for LO? isnt he gonna be like a 18 8 guy?

Gerald Wallace averaged nearly 3 steals a game and 2 blocks last season. He trumps Odom on defense. Its not close. I would trade Odom for Wallace. I would trade Odom for Josh Smith. Smith is a left handed Wallace.

Gerald Wallace plays to his potential and beyond, whereas Odom doesn't.

I think its more than JUST wallace for odom... its Wallace + 6M trade exception for Odom. Which is good.

There was a buzz about a 3-way trade that did not happen:

Lamar Odom to New Jersey

Richard Jefferson to Charlotte

Gerald Wallace to Lakers

Looking at it, it made me realize several things:

  1. That this is a part of a grander scheme that puts us into the running of a JO or KG trade while not losing the valuable things Lamar provides the team.

  2. Mitch has indeed focused on defensive strategies to further improve the team.

  3. That another trade is surely on the way had this gone through. (We will be getting a 6M trade exception from Charlotte)

Taking those 3 assumptions, is it safe to assume that the

Lakers are in the running for another pitch at KG or JO? Otherwise, it is not a welcome sight to trade away a player who has learned the triangle quite well for someone younger and with less experience in Wallace.

Trade exceptions seem to be a growing trend these days... after GSW got a 10M one from Charlotte from a Draft Day trade and Seattle acquiring Kurt Thom + picks from Phoenix for an 8M exception. In GS's case, they might be plannign on another KG pitch. For Phoenix, they just sold 2 more 1st rounders to Seattle to stay away from the luxury tax.

That being said, Why not explore one ourselves? Why not do an Odom for Wallace trade straight up?

I made one article on this matter on Lakers topBuzz :

But Odom can play the 3 spot - something they sorely lack...

we just cant seem to get ahead for nothing. everytime we have a chance to unload LO and his bad contract something happens. minny, doesnt want him, jordan didnt want jefferson, and we dont want to give him up along with byno for JO. its looking more and more that basically the same team will be back next year meaning an early playoff ousting again. this is getting really frustrating.
