Has Josh Powell Finally Found A Home in LA?

Josh Powell has only been in the NBA for 3 seasons and now the Lakers are his 5th team. The Clippers had an 800K option to keep Josh Powell on their roster. Not monster money. After Josh saw an increased role last year on the Clippers roster due to injuries, the Clippers saw a good young player who wasn't particularly great at anything. So this summer as the Clippers rebuilt their roster they went in another direction. The Lakers somehow saw this as an opportunity to add Josh to their roster so he could..........mostly sit on the bench. You would think that Josh would get Ronny Turiaf's minutes. But the reason Turiaf is gone is that with the return of AB and with Pau Gasol sliding to PF, Turiaf would be buried behind other Bigs and costing about 3 Mil to much for that role. The dilemma with Josh is he proved last season that he can fill in but can not begin to replace a starter well enough to carry a team that is supposed to be headed back to the finals. Last season he went for 5.5PPG and 5RPG in 19 minutes. He shot 46% mostly close to the basket. One could argue that in 38 minutes he would average a double double. But those numbers were put up on a depleted Clippers roster, not the Lakers. The most we could hope for is that he continues to get some rebounds. He only had .4 blocks per game. So how much will Josh Powell help? Not much. Why did we sign him? For depth at power forward. Will he be much of a factor? Only if somebody gets hurt. Will he be able to fill in at the level we need him to? Only time will tell. He is a young guy with promise and maybe the future is right ahead of him. JamFan

Um, wow.
Why do you have to go on a bashing rant? "Clipper reject"?
Sheesh. Give the man a chance....
Ronny wasn't re-signed because his minicule talent didn't warrant 4 years, 17 million in addition to the fact that he wouldn't get minutes....

You must have read only the headline. The article adequately reflects about where Josh's game is right now. And I was kind in admitting he is still young and has potential. But the headline is truthful. In fact, the Lakers are now his 5th team and he has only played 3 seasons. So the Clippers were only the 4th team to let him go somewhere else in a very short period of time. And by the way, I did give him a chance. I watched him play about 25 games last season for the Clips. My opinion is still the same. He is a good role player who is not exactly great at anything.

I dunno. "Only .4 blocks a game", "Mostly close to the basket","How much will he help? Not much".
You just seemed to be subtley throwing out things, albeit maybe true, to try to emphasize his weaknesses...
I would say he's probably just as good a mid-range shooter as Ronny....

The point of my current poll, and this article, and the thread I started about how the Lakers have not improved their roster is..........they really haven't improved the roster. All of the signings so far this summer are really guys who will be on the third unit. They can't really help us come playoff time next season. Yes, they all will be in the bottom 5.

I'm sorry Jam but I have to agree with VujacicSlovenia. It seems that you still haven't got over the fact that Ronny is gone. I think that Powell more than fills up the spot that Ronny vacated. Why can't you just be more optimistic for our chosen team? We are already over the salary cap so don't expect that we could have acquired other free agent superstars. In my opinion, FO is doing their best to assemble a capable supporting cast for our mainstays. So I say, please be more optimistic. Peace.

I hear you. Ronny was one of my favorites. I guess sometimes I expect to much in this salary capped NBA world we all live in. I guess more important than who is filling out our roster, is how we find the money to sign AB to a long term contract. Every dollar we spend on our role players is a dollar not available for that deal. I never doubted our nucleus. Our first 8 players is going to be a tough team for anybody to beat night in and night out. The match up problems we create for our opponents will cause opposing coaches to lose a lot of sleep.
