Jamfan The agent for Shammond Williams is expressing that his client has indeed agreed to sign with the Lakers for the 1.75 Mil exemption. The holdup was the buyout of his contract with the team he has been playing for in Spain.
Williams had an uneventful stay in the NBA with 6 different teams and average only 6 PPG. But the reason that the Lakers were interested is that he is a veteran at age 31, and he seems to have blossomed while playing overseas.
Williams played in Russia in the 2004-05 season and with Spain last year.
He put up 13.4 PPG and 4.2 assists for Barcelona. He is not the prototype tall guard that Coach Jackson likes, being only 6' tall, and he is more of a shooter that a PG. He did however shoot 59.6% last year, and hit 40.8 % from the 3. That kind of shooting will definitely get it done.
Lets hope he can get those shots off against the NBA's best defenders. With Kobe drawing all the attention, Vlad Rad and Shammond should get a lot of good open looks. If Kwame or our new starting Center, Baby Bynum, gets a good low post game going, defenses will have to sag or get beat down low. I really bellieve Bynum is the key. If defense have to pay attention to him, our outside shooters will have a field day.
