Lakers Offseason, Draft/Player Movement

The Lakers definetly need to make some moves this summer. Their main target positions at this point would be PG, C, and PF. In my point of view the Lakers do NOT need to move up in the draft to be a Championship Contender. There is not much depth in this years draft, and the price the Lakers would have to pay to move up in the draft is somewhat crazy. If anything, I say the Lakers trade the Bulls for the 16th pick without giving up Mihm. We currently have two solid centers in our roster and Bynum is a work in progress. If we do decide to move up in the draft and trade Mihm, we MUST get Chandler in return from the Bulls. Right now a trade with Chicago is likely but I think the Bulls would prefer Marion over Odom. A trade that included Mihm instead of Odom would be a smarter deal for the Lakers anyway. If Odom is traded for a draft pick there will not be as much talent playing along side Kobe, and the Lakers will not have any Trade bait to intrest other teams. I think if the Lakers had the #2 pick they wouldn't know what to do with it. At Sixteen overall you can still get a quality player that can help the team. Right now it seems the Lakers will be letting Devean George go into Free agency which means Luke Walton will get more playing time and maybe start! The Lakers will not have a substanial amount of money to spend on free agents until next year, due to the waiving of Brian Grant last year. The Lakers will still have to pay off his 15 million dollar contract this year as well.
We need some help at the point that is for sure. This year the Lakers definetly need to pursue some free agent guards. Right now in the money situation the Lakers are in they will probably need to target a veteran player or a young player who might be the spark to the Lakers fast breaks. I think the best choice would be Sam Cassell by far. After the breakout season he had this year he might have a heftier price tag. If we negociate with the Clippers we might come up with a sign-in-trade. The Clippers would proably demand a big man for the trade. The Lakers would proably be willing to give up Mihm if they got Cassel in return. If they decide to make this kind of deal they will need to target big men in the draft. I say they take Jordan Farmer (depending on pick) in the first round and hopefully get a 7' sleeper in the second round. Another PG free agent that is appealing to me is Marcus Banks who shined in his half season in Minnesota this year. Mike James is another option after his best season of his career, but the cost and the length of his contract will be to overpowering for the Lakers. If Devean George leaves, the Lakers should pursue free agent Latrell Spreewell who sat out this year. Spreewell almost joined the Lakers last season. Spreewell could be a third scoring option for the Lakers and a quality addition if he stays out of trouble. When the Lakers come to addressing the Big Man situation there are more options than at the Point. A name that comes to mind is Nazr Mohammed a free agent and former Spur who has Championship Experience. At PF I think Chris Wilcox would be a great addition. He has gotten stronger and is now more powerful down-low. Another Free Agent who might me a sleeper this year is Reggie Evans a PF from the Nuggets who didn't play much but did his part this year. Tell me what you think about the Lakers Situation.
QUESTION: Would Spreewell be worth the 5 million dollar exception at this stage in his career?
OPINION: Why is Sasha Vujacic still on the roster??? I would much prefer Smush Parker on my roster than a 6' 8" PG that only knows how to shoot threes! How about you???

For me, the ideal move/s for the Lakers would be (Using Chris Mihm and the #26 pick) try and move up and draft Brandon Roy if he is still available at 5-7. If not, (offer at #14-17 Mihm only, or 1st and 2nd round picks) and try for Shawne Williams. If they are able to trade for Mihm, then try to secure a big guy (through FA/Trade) 1) Mohammed 2) Diop 3) Wilcox 4) Evans 5) Nesterovic 6) Mutumbo. If they are able to get Roy or any NBA-ready PG from the draft (and keep Mihm), they should focus on signing Sprewell or any veteran who can be the third option in scoring at $5M/yr for two years. I don't think a Jordan Farmar or a similar type of player would fit into the Lakers' short-term plan. What they need is a starter-caliber PG or a combo guard who can consistently contribute 12-15pts/game. They have too many "young" players with a lot of upside (Sasha, Bynum, and Turiaf). They also need another center or a PF with experience who can play the high post in the triangle and has a consistent medium range jumper (Nesterovic, Doleac) who can replace Kwame if he gets into foul trouble, injured, or whenever Phil will "question his manhood" again. But if the Lakers decide to keep their draft position and keep Mihm and experiment him as primarily a PF and back-up C, Then the Lakers should: Pray that Shawne Williams is still available at 26, Waive Aaron Mckie, then bring back Laron Profit or Kareem Rush. Spend the mid-level on a Cassell, Mike James, or Sprewell. But in a perfect world, my dream move/s will be:
1) Draft Brandon Roy (start him out as back-up to Smush then try to make them compete for the starting position as the season goes on)
2) Assuming Chris Mihm is traded for the Roy pick, Sign either Tim Thomas or Latrell Sprewell using the mid-level to have that scoring machine coming off the bench and sometimes in late game situations.
3) Use the $1.8M exception, or slightly go over the cap space on a veteran Big Guy like Nazr Mohammed, Rasho Nesterovic,

Reggie Evans would be a great addition- that guy's the sort of blue-collar defensive and rebounding presence that the Lakers need. Brandon Roy sounds like a good choice in the draft- he can really score it and has great court awareness.

i say go for sprewell and trade with the bulls and try to pic up wilcox that way we can have
tyson chandler
chris wilcox
and sprewell
think about how out good our starting lineup would be.honestly kwame can come off the bench we keep wilcox as a starter with chandler and i guess we can keep odom as a starter over sprewell and i fell we will have a championship team ..no one agree?

Tyson Chandler would be a great addition for rebounding and shot blocking- the only problem is that he is injury prone. When he's healthy though he's a Ben Wallace type player.

Wow. Chandler just signed a big contract with the Bulls. Do you think the Lakers want that? (*ahem* Brian Grant). I definitely don't think they want that again. Sam Cassell is committed to the Clips and Farmar has lazy work ethic. I don't think he would fair well in the NBA.
Yes, what players' have proved in their "career" is important but the question is, "Is it a good fit to the Lakers' offense?" You know Phil won't change his offense for new players. Chris Wilcox to the Lakers? Have you seen him play? You don't know what you're going to get come each night.

Plus I think the rookies this year (Turiaf, Bynum) will have their roles substantially increased next year. Now that their team sees what they can do, you know all of them will be looking forward to the upcoming year.

Yeah good point- we'll see how Turiaf & Bynum develop in the summer league- they can really help shore up the interior if they improve.

I am happy that all of you guys are showing up and participating in this website. When it started just last season, we didn't have a huge following at first. It took awhile. I did most of the writing and had to come up with all the ideas. Now, not only are you guys writing, but I can tell you are all knowledgeable Lakers fans. In fact, I wish Mitch would just check in and let you guys tell him what to do. He needs a little help. With all your ideas we would have a more powerful, revamped roster next season. Power on! Anonymous is right. I just checked Chandler's contract and it is for 6 years and 64 Mil. The Lakers will only mess up their plan of having all their cap space availalble to sign a max player next summer, if they could get a franchise player this summer, like KG. Chandler is not going to make a big enough impact for them to abandon their strategy. And the only contract they have that would offset Chandler's is Lamar's, and I don't think they will make that trade. So, trading Mihm to move up is more likely. They will use their exemptions to sign a couple of good players and you guys have already identified the usual suspects. I'm cool with Mohammed and Spree. Wilcox is more of a high fly act and needs the kind of discipline that Coach Jackson could give him, but he probably fits better on a team like the Suns. He would have to play PF for us. The Lakers gave every indication that they were trying to trade for a veteran PG before the deadline and I still feel that Smush will not be starting next season. One of their exemptions will probably go for a point guard. I just don't have a good feeling on who that would be. If you look at the free agents available I don't see a good fit. Any ideas? JamFan

What about Jim Jackson, he was basically a starter for the Suns, hits 3's, is a veteran, plays D, has experience, if he was allowed more time in the regular season he could've been the factor in the playoffs
