Today, NBA.com released the results of its eighth annual survey of the league’s general managers. The majority of GMs believe that the Lakers will repeat as NBA champions for the seventh time in their history, and that LeBron James will earn his second straight MVP award.
More than 70 percent of those who responded believe that the Spurs, with the additions of Richard Jefferson and Antonio McDyess, did the most to improve their team this summer. Very very disappointing loss last night. Not to mention the game ended about 1:30 NY time. By the time I watched the post game it was after 2 in the morning, but that's another story.
As far as the game the Rockets deserved the win, they outplayed the Lakers the whole game. Mr Ming said it best after the game.."we were hungry for this win" The Lakers on the other hand did not look hungry at all. I guess they thought every team would be as soft as the Jazz. Utah and Houston play 2 different games,Utah plays zero defense and Houston plays very good defense and wants to grind it out. The Lakers dont like grind it out games,we saw that in the Boston series last year.
Kobe had one of those games that as a Laker fan you really hate to see. He was shooting and forcing up nothing but jumpers that were not falling all night. He never drove to the basket, never went to the foul line, never once took over the game. Was it because he was sick? Was it the Rocket defense? Probably a little of both.
I agree 100 percent about Fisher,we all love Fish but he cant be on the floor against Brooks. Brooks went by him every single time and either scored or found someone wide open..like Mr Ming. Fisher played 33 of a possible 48 minutes...way too much. Brown and Farmar have to be in the game more. Farmar hit a big 3 at the end of the 3rd but Phil pulled him right away.
And I dont care what the stats say Odom and Gasol both played very soft games. Odom from the line was 1-6, that is just horrible. In the first few minutes Ming blocked Gasol's shot and Pau was soft the whole game after that.
I remember Pat Riley always saying when you squeeze an orange you get orange juice,it seems when you squeeze Odom you get a game like last night. Odom seems to be a downhill runner. When the Lakers are running and flying up and down the court he looks great, when the game gets squeezed you get his game from last night. In a big spot I never trust him.
He never carries a team in a big spot.
Gasol was short arming his shot all night,he was pushed around and Ming ate him up. Bynum it seems has been picking up silly fouls very early in these games and is out of the game more then in it. Bynum played 15 minutes and not at all at the end. 15 minutes? Ming played 40!!!!!!!!!! 15 minutes from Bynum and a million dumb fouls wont get it done. Throw in that Ariza,Sasha, and Brown all did very little as well.
The Lakers warts all showed up last night from Kobe jacking up jumpers to Bynum getting 2 fouls in a minute and playing all of 15 minutes to Gasol being soft to the bench doing nothing to Fisher being exposed and to Odom being squeezed,it all was there last night. As always the Staples celeb filled crowd does little to lift the team as well. It was a complete dud.
Now having said all that I agree there is no need to worry. I think the Lakers are better then Houston. The Rockets will have trouble scoring in most of these games, not having T Mac when they need buckets will be a big factor.
The Rockets did everything right last night and the Lakers played a terrible game yet the Lakers still had a shot in the 4th. I think as the series moves on the Lakers will be too much for the Rockets to hold off like they did last night.
Yes I know the stats, teams that win game 1 win 80 percent of the time, yes I know Phil has never lost after winning game 1 but is 6-8 when losing game 1,I know...I just think the Lakers are better and deeper and the loss of T MAC will hurt Houston. I thought Lakers in 5 before last night,I still think Lakers win and it does not go 7.
Let me also say that the Lakers and Kobe HAVE to win the title this year or its a huge blow, its a title or nothing. Kobe and the lakers would have egg on their face if they dropped this series to a T Mac-less Rocket team in the 2nd round.
And I myself would get a nice slice of humble pie. I usually dont drink Laker Kool aid and I am not a homer. I always look to have the perfect team,I guess because I have seen great Laker teams. But at the end of the year I was drinking a lot of Laker Kool aid and I believed and still do that the Lakers would win the title not because they have a great team but because there is no team out there that can beat them. I still believe that.
The lakers WILL NOT lose this series and WILL NOT lose game 2.
Last night I got a little taste of humble pie at 2 am NY time..let me say I did not like the taste at all. Lets hope the rest of that humble pie stays hidden until another year very far from now. I hated the taste of humble pie but I think Kobe would hate it even more if the Lakers did lose this series.

Sun Yue was drafted last year by the Lakers in the second round. Back then he just seemed like a skinny kid who maybe wouldn't ever be ready for the NBA. Sun is not even close to being the biggest star in China. However, he brings an unual skill set by being able to play point guard at 6'9". The last Laker to be able to do that was Magic Johnson. Coach Jackson has always preferred tall PG's to run his Triangle offense. With the Chinese national basketball team, Sun has alternated coming off the bench with Chen Jianghua, behind the team's starting PG Liu Wei. He was initially slated as the top point guard for China by the 2008 Olympic Basketball Tournament in Beijing, with his exceptional size and passing ability, but with the rise of Chen, there is now doubt as to who will be the better Chinese point guard in the future. During the Orlando Pre-Draft camp, he was measured with a 34" vertical leap, a 6'9" wingspan, a 8'9" standing reach, a 5.1% body fat ratio, and a time of 10.68 seconds (ranking in the top 3 times at the camp) in lane agility. For the Lakers he could come off the bench and possibly play PG, SG, or SF. JamFan

The Lakers will open with a home game vs. Greg Oden, Brandon Roy, and the rest of the Portland Trailblazers on October 28th. Then it will be a "road" game vs. the cross-town rivals the Los Angeles Clippers. A very interesting game on the schedule is the Christmas Day battle with the Boston Celtics at Staples Center.October

The rumors are true. Shaq is back in the Western Conference. In an act of desperation, the Suns, a first place team with one of the top records in the NBA, over reacted to the Lakers getting Pau Gasol and rolled the dice. They traded for a former super star who is in rapid decline. In fact, due to an injury he can not even play for awhile. The achievements of Shaq are well documented. Unfortunately for the Suns, none of them have occured in the last couple of years. The last two seasons have been a litany of injury after injury, comeback after comeback, stuggles with weight and conditioning, and ending with declining numbers and his first exit from the All Star game. Who would vote for him now? Not many. At age 35 and still carry a load of weight, things are unlikely to get better for Shaq. You can eventually recover from some of the injuries that he has had. But when your hips start to go....well....it's not like a hammy. When hips start to go bad they usually never fully recover. Eventually they end up with a hip replacement. Just ask PJ. So one has to wonder what the Suns were thinking. They run a quick strike offense and the only thing that Shaq can strike quickly is Fatburgers. They will be playing offense four on five. One has to also wonder what their doctors were thinking. The last report I read on his hip was that he was heading towards surgury to clear out some junk. They must have decided that it can wait until summer and gamble on his being able to make through the season. They have rolled the dice. If he doesn't make it, they could go into the playoffs without Shaq and Shawn Marion. If that happens this trade will spell doom for the Suns. Even if it doesn't happen, they have spent 40 mil on a player that the Heat were happy to unload. It is just a matter of time until father time catches up with Shaq. If he hasn't already. Either way, mark you calenders for Wednesday, February 20 at 6PM. Speculation is that Shaq will make his debut at home in Phoenix against....you guessed it, the Lakers. JamFan

The Lakers have reportedly made a roster shaking trade sending Kwame Brown and his expiring contract, Javaris Crittenton, and two first round draft picks to the Memphis Grizzlies for Pau Gasol Many Laker fans have been clamoring for such a trade with the thinking that what the Lakers really needed was a legitimate power forward that could help propel the Lakers to another championship, or at least be in contention to go to the finals. This season Pau is scoring 19 PPG, with 9 RPG, while hitting 50% from the floor. This move allows the Lakers to permanently move Lamar Odom to small forward, and when Andrew Bynum returns, they will have one of the most formidable front lines in all of basketball. Moreover, in a recent report out of Spain, Pau's brother is reportedly one of the dominating forces in the Euro league playoffs and is a candidate for MVP. The Lakers drafted Marc Gasol in the second round last summer. One has to wonder than when they drafted Marc, they did so knowing that Pau was going to be their primary target all along. However, the Lakers had to send the rights to Marc in the deal. They also did a sign and trade with Aaron McKie to make the salary numbers work. There is also cash considerations involved and the Lakers receive a future 2nd round pick from the Grizzlies. Certainly having both Gasol brothers together on the Lakers roster would have made quite a story, especially with them being on the floor together at the same time. Now, that will never happen. This seems like a great trade for the Lakers. They gave up Kwame whose contract was expiring anyway and has been on the butt end of endless jokes by Laker fans because he has never lived up to being a #1 pick in the draft, and we gave Caron Butler to get him, which was a big mistake. Critt, is a future star, but he was the Lakers 3rd PG and rarely used. And as for giving up a couple of future 1st round draft picks, well, the Lakers future is now while Kobe is in his prime and we are definitely not rebuilding. Rejoice Laker fans, Kobe's wish has come true. When we get everyone healthy there will be no excuses anymore. We have all the pieces in place, We have all the horses to make a run. Hopefully we will be peeking into Chick Hearn's refridgerator over and over again. Jamfan
