    Lakers Set?

It's pretty commonplace these days to read about how desperate the Los Angeles Lakers are to trade Kwame Brown. While he is a valuable expiring contract ($9.075 million), a source close to the team says there's no pressure for the Lakers to move him at all.

Now that Andrew Bynum has arrived and Brown is finally healthy, the Lakers have a very potent big-man combination. Certainly Brown has significant limitations offensively but LA is thinking ahead to playoffs where the road to the NBA Finals goes through the San Antonio Spurs.

Brown is by far the team's best post defender. The Lakers won't give up his ability to bother Tim Duncan without getting someone significant in return. If Jason Kidd or possibly Jermaine O'Neal suddenly became available LA would search for a Brown replacement - but the odds of a blockbuster deal coming up are very slim.

As it is, O'Neal wasn't terribly impressive in either meeting between the Lakers and Pacers.

Lamar Odom is finally settling into a role on the team. Coach Phil Jackson attempted to move Odom to small forward but the talented Laker simply isn't aggressive enough to take advantage of mismatches consistently on the offensive end. On the other hand, Odom is a very solid on the boards at the four, helping to make Lakers one of the best rebounding teams in the league.

The acquisition of Trevor Ariza has loaded the team up at the three and frankly power forward is the squad's most specious position. Look for LA to decide Odom's fate with the squad after the postseason.

Since sources indicate that the team isn't about to part with any of their young pieces like Jordan Farmar, Ronny Turiaf or Javaris Crittenton - the Lakers don't really have much they're willing to offer. If Brown is the guy to go, the Lakers would expect a similarly capable post defender in his stead.

Part of the reason the LA has such good chemistry this year is that nearly everyone on the team knows their role. The two rookies don't expect to play (though it's harder on Crittenton than Coby Karl). Chris Mihm is still trying to get back to his old self after the ankle surgeries. Only Vladimir Radmanovic has yet to find a comfort zone. Otherwise each Laker approaches the season with a sense of purpose.

Management will take phone calls and look at the possibilities but they may have already made their big trade of the season by landing Ariza.

Why not look for a trade who can bring in someone who can help us inside and at the same time, bring salary cap relief to the team traded for?

As I suggested, we can dangle Kwame's expiring to one of the said team: New York, Miami and maybe Memphis.

We can try and get David Lee and a filler from them that would bring them instatn cap relief from their league high salary and at the same time, bring a serviceable big who can immediately contribute.

We can try and get Udonis Haslem from Miami. This brings us toughness and perimeter shooting from our four spot while getting extra hustle points from this guy.

And lastly, we can try and get Hakim Warrick from the Grizzlies. I think with his length and athleticism, he can be one of our energy guys from off the bench.

What do yo think guys? I haven't actually tried these at the trade machine, but its worth the look ain't it?

I'd rather have David Lee, Udonis Haslem or Hakim Warrick than be stuck with Kwame and his baby-butterfingered-hands. Talk about a number one pick...

...But on the other hand, we can stay put at least this year and have the services of Kwame till the playoffs and then part with him. I mean Chris Mihm is going to be gone for a while and if he return, he won't be 100%. So our only big at that time will be Andrew Bynum. So we can still play Kwame as the backup center for AB. Either way, we get Kwame's expiring or we trade him for a big as well.

The Laker front office is actually becoming smarter by the minute.

I still have a feeling that there will be some sort of trade before the deadline, not sure who for, but I can feel it in me bones. Lets hope the front office continues with their good decisions.

Kwame provides the FO with an opportunity: trade him, let him expire and collect the cap, or resign him.

I admit, that as a backup center, a healthy Kwame is a formitable player. He may not be the sharpest offensive tool, but he can play D, rebount and make a few points along the way. Can we keep him for less than 9 mill a year? That's up to Kwame. Bigs with is size are very hard to come by. Will he ever stay healthy? Not based on history so far.

We could seek a PF to replace him, but that pushes Lamar out of PF (Turiaf fits there) back to F, where Ariza & Luke reside. I'm thinking we will trade Kwame for a PF; we have Mark Gasol in EU who they may bring in Kwame's spot next year, and he is a lot cheaper. (He's doing quite well out there) What say you?

hopefully they trade for a Forward or Center Position so someone can backup Bynum.. I would say to trade Bynum but a good deal in return

Did you say you would trade Bynum or do you mean Brown? I hope you mistakenly put Bynum instead of Brown.
