so i was reviewing some of the scores from the preseason games that are already played, and what i noticed is that the only blow out games (losing by more than 10) that were had were by teams who played against predicted top tier teams. here are few to name... CHA 80 ORL 118, NOH 105 IND 71, MIL 71 DET 85. all the rest of the games were, i would say, close in score, but there are a few exceptions such as TOR 104 CLE 84. regardless, what do we conclude about our loss to the clippers? LAC 107 LAL 80...
i think its safe to infer that i am disappointed by today's game. i know its just the preseason, and there's still a lot of "gelling" that needs to be done in regards to chemistry, but what the hell? the clippers by 27? just an observation to spur conversation and insight... |

the bucks lost to the timberwolves by 38... i dont think that the wolves are gonna make much noise this season.
nothing to worry about. its preseason. the coaching staff isnt trying to WIN, they're trying to EVALUATE.
if winning comes along with that, great, if not, at least the games dont count.

I think the biggest concern should be our D.
The d hasn´t improved a bit.... no, it looks worse....
thats not a good sign, if you´re going to slow the tempo... |

| The scores in the preseason shouldn't be a yardstick in how we are going to perform this season. For one, the starters were barely used and the rotations were switched to see who works best at what positions, and the roster will need to be trimmed, so it's kind of a showcase to see who we keep or not. I do agree with Caz though, that the biggest concern is our D. |

It looks worse for one reason: Lamar Odom. He just stands around like a dope, long face, bored look on his face. When he is in the lineup, we are basically playing four against five.
Phil and his staff, and maybe DFish, had better figure out what is wrong because this guy just doesn;t want to be on the floor. Even the Lakers radio announcers say Lamar isn't in the game.
Too bad he is stinkin; up the joint, cos he is ruining his trade value by playing like this. |

Our main guys are sacrificing their games in the preseason to let the rookies showcase their games. In today's game against the Clippers I saw numerous times where Kobe could run in for the lay-up or make a shot but he would give it to a rookie so he could show something to the coaches. Like LA85 said, the preseason is about evaluating, not winning. We could lose by 50 but at the same time we could see some potention in one of our rookies. Bynum and Gasol did not play much together in today's game, and I think they are still gelling but they will gel quickly, believe you me.
As for Lamar, I'm at a loss... |

| Think Odom relaxed too much during the off-season. |

Vlade has played great - I think he is really trying hard to be a defensive player more then in years past - that is great. Vlade sees his opportunity to play drying up unless he can get better at the defensive end.
Ariza is playing great. He is the defensive gem we all were hoping for last year and got a little of during his short time before the injury. Now, he looks really good.
Pau is playing fantastic in the few minutes that he is on the floor.
Fisher - steady as a rock.
Kobe - he is Kobe and will be Kobe - enough said.
Bynum - he is moving great and that was my biggest concern. He looks completely healthy and is playing decently. It will take some time to get his timing and to gel with the team mates again - but no worries here.
Powell looks great. I really like this kids game as a backup pf. Awesome.
Jordan - he is really playing strong - confident and ready. His defense is still not great - but maybe that is asking too much.
Mihm - looks healthy again. He is a great backup center when healthy.
All in all - I too am disappointed that they are getting beaten so badly, but it is most of the time the guys trying to make the team or trying to impress (Vlade) the staff to give them more time. So this pre-season really isn't showing much of what the real rotation is capable of. |

Why is anyone upset about preseason?
Look if you win (and big) in the preseason, it means your doing something wrong as a coach. Your Starters should barely be playing, and you should be trying things (line ups, offenses, plays, and defensive strategies) that you would not be trying in regular season.
Preseason is only intense for the rooks and guys trying to make the team. For everyone else it's simply a chance to start getting your running legs in.
It's a long season, and the best teams NEVER get intense at the start of the season. Teams that do usually tail off in the season. I have no reason to believe the lakers are not hungry.
But as far as what there is to see in the preseason. I like what I saw from Powell. It is good to see Bynum moving well. Really good to see Ariza so active. We need that extra energy with Roni gone.
The rest is just pretty boring. |
