There are a handful of POSSIBLE big-named player from the crop of free agents next year. Two of which that could greatly help our cause - Elton Brand and Jermaine Oneal. But with the current payroll we have, its best to know what our options are so we could effectively plan ahead while keeping our bid for this year alive.
May I note that all assumptions are with Kobe STAYING a Laker.
Our payroll for next year stands at 60M with 9 players with guaranteed contracts - Kobe, Lamar, Fish, Luke, Vlad, Cook, Farmar, Crittenton, Bynum. Assuming Mihm exercises his option of 2.5M with us, thats 62.5M with 10 players. We need 5 more players to round up our roster and that includes 5 of our own seeking the re-ups: Ronny, Kwame, Sasha, Mo Evans and Coby Karl.
Do we expect to acquire JO or Brand next year? No. Not with the current makeup of the team and how its positioned. Therefore, I have some suggestions for us to do and I number them according to pre-requisite or priority.
1. Trade Brian Cook + 2M to a team that has a trade exception (GSW or SEA) for 2 future 2nds.
Effect: we cut 3.5M salary this year, lowering our payroll by the same amount and we evade the luxury tax. We pay 2M as part of the deal...
Payroll: 59M, 8 players.
2. Swap our 08 1st and one of the 2nd rounders we have via the Brian Cook trade for Portland's Rudy Fernandez.
Effect: we can choose to have Rudy stay in Europe or sign him to a rookie scale contract if we lose Mo Evans and Sasha to free agency. He will be our pick for next year, so to speak.
Payroll: 61M, 9 players.
3. Re-sign Ronny Turiaf as the 1st priority come July 1, 2008. Starting salary could be at 4M. (Like Luke Walton's contract)
Effect: We keep our core, and I think 99% of Laker fans will agree on this move.
Payroll: 65M, 10 players.
Up to this point, the Lakers are fine. What comes after are situation-based approach depending on the performance of the ff. players:
4. Make qualifying offers:
Kwame Brown - 12M, 3yrs. / Mo Evans - 10M, 3yrs.
5. Waive Sasha Vujacic if Crittenton is not traded.
6. If the Lakers pursue JO or Brand, a trade of Odom + filler for Antawn Jamison is the one that makes most sense. However, with what Lamar is showing so far, its too early to judge. Miami will also be interested in Odom in exchange for Jason Williams' expiring + Udonis Haslem + picks.
---------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------
As for the moment, we should continue to play our hearts out to have the WCF as a decent target. Staying healthy all year should help us get past the 1st round and an outside chance to knock of a contender in the 2nd round. Keep those fingers crossed and hope for the best. |

Outstanding knowledge Mister *acting like a stadium announcer* !Waaaaaarren Weeeeeeeeeeelim! Dude, i must admit you make me feel like i let me say every second or third topic you post i have to rep you. You have to be honored or something haha! Really, you are such a important piece to this site imo!
I like all your ideas but Lamar as you said should be given time to prove himself this season. If he´s oof to a good start to the season the Lakers as a team will be, too. Imagine LO putting up numbers like 20-9-7. I know he´s capable of doing it talentwise. I think we all know, but how is he transferring his talent onto the court? I hope that this season he finally realises his ability to dominate most of the forwards there in the east and enough forwards here in the west. Odom in peak form can stick with the likes of Marion, Kirilenko and so on. If this team starts winning and Lamar is doing his job i´m not the one who thinks he must be traded. I´d rather see Bynum go than a LO with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists a game IF he´s doing that good. I love Andrew, but i think with one of these 2 we HAVE to part ways simply because of their relevance to other teams that are our trade partners.
All in all i´m looking forward to the future, too. No matter if we have to take the way you, Warren, are explaining us or just the winning with proven LO and grown AB way. If our FO using some brain (i know, i know... ) we should not be worried about the future. Especially with the Lakers winning more games this season and a conf.-finals-exit possible (which would def. be a "really good" end to the season for this team) the Free-Agents next year i think will be more than willing to play for this uprising Lakers.
I love our team at the moment and i´m just looking forward to a good season WITH Lamar, if we´re stuck in mediocrity or not where we wanted to be at this point of the season we still can trade at the deadline. Let THIS Lakers prove themselves first! We all will be having fun watching this team! |

warren, how did Hong Kong treat you!?
awesome post as usual. o this is the vet forum, i was gonna say all newbies here should learn from warren; if you have 1/3 of this kind of effort and insight you are doing it right here.
i love the brian cook trade for 2 second rounder. we literally just drop his contract to whatever team, since second round picks contract aint garenteed... and you also remind us that we should waive sasha... |

Hongkong was NICE as usual Samus. I must admit I didn't enjoy Disneyland as much as I'd want to since I was literally carrying my 2-yr old daughter all the time. Yikes, she weighs 14kg you know...
Other than that and the loooong walks, shopping was nice as usual. We also went to ShamShuiPo for that very cheap electronics. (Nintendo DS for my nephews and a brand new PSP slim for me.) |

| Great post Warren. I agree with everything that you said. I especially love trading Cook out of here for those 2 picks. |
