Mitch Kupchak confirmed the Lakers do not plan on using their mini mid-level exception and would likely only offer veteran minimum contracts to prospective free agents.

The Lakers are "unlikely" to use their amnesty clause this offseason, Kupchak said.

wonder what that means for signing Jamison? He's going to at least want the mini mid I would guess. The rest of the spots are going to be major old scrubs like Oneal, I hope he's not planning on bringing back Murphy, He's probably planning on keeping Sacre as a big unfortunatly.

I'm pretty sure Jamison picked the Lakers knowing the offer. Crazy how D12 is holding us up on using that mini mid level.

How is Howard holding us up on using the mini?

What offer did Jamison accept? I haven't heard.

If Mitch said he is only using the vets minnimum is because he is trying to hit that home run w D12. Jamison is coming here to win. He will take it IMO.

Tell us something we didn't know. It's obvious what you guys are doing Mitch. You're keeping McBob's expiring contract on the books so you could possibly absorb Howard. Maybe you're doing the same with the mini-mid, not too sure if it works that way or not.

You are a long time Lakers fan obviously, since you have been a LTB member since 2007.I respect your opinion and admire your dedication to this website.I have a question for you.Do you like the direction of this team in the short term? These are the final years of Kobe Bryant. They are making a last run at a championship,at least that's the perception in L.A.!

You cannot combine different exceptions, and the mini-MLE can only be used on free agents. If any contract absorption were to happen in a potential Howard trade, it would have absolutely nothing to do with the mini-MLE.

Yeah that's true.I been watching the Lakers summer league team and they are horrible. They are all second round picks and undrafted players.I want the Lakers to get Brandon Rush or Courtney Lee.

They are veterans but still in there mid 20's.The Lakers didn't land O.J. Mayo dang it.I heard Dallas got him by renouncing there TPE from the Lamar Odom and Mo Williams trade.Eric Pincus talked about it last night on twitter.

After we win back to back and Kobe has 7 rings nobody will be talking about this. Boston came a lot closer to beating the Heat and they were much older than OKC. The direction we are going is WIN NOW. In 2 years we will have Kobe and Gasol's contracts off the books and have money to spend on FA. We never built around the draft. Not what the Lakers are about and w Dwight FA will want to come play w him, say what you want I live in Fl and my main man was once a season ticket holder for the Magic. Their Organization is a joke. DWIGHT took Rafer Alston, Rashard Lewis to the finals. Get serious!

Still not seeing how getting Dwight is stopping us from using the mini this year.

Why is that obvious?

If Dwight won't sign an extention before the trade, it would be stupid to get him, and Bynum will also need to sign an extention to make it worth it for Orlando or Houston, I just don't see either of those happening. Dwight screwed himself by signing an extention for one year in stead of being a free agent this summer, now he's really screwed on going where he wants to go (Brooklyn) He needs to use his noggin and sign with the Lakers, go for rings, then go where he wants in two to three years.

Because it doesn't.

There's no reason to read into this any more than what's plain on the surface. This is the same FO that dropped Odom & Fisher in a pure salary dump. Now that they've added a hefty bill with Nash, they're very reluctant to add any more salary, other than veterna's minimums which are partially reimbursed by the league.

Number 1 we are trying to save money, number 2 with Dwight we are probably taking on a bad contract so we probably won't use it at all.

We aren't getting either Hills now. Jordan just left for the Timberwolves. Its on HoopsHype and I expected it after the Jamison signing. We should try to sign and trade him for someone at the least. We have his bird rights I believe.

The Lakers get neither Hill.I don't like the looks of this free agency period.Losing Sessions and Jordan hurts the bench tremendously.

Your right about #2, and that's why this deal won't go down, no way in hell we are taking on Turkeyglu or JRich's horrible contracts.

But Dwight is not currently stopping us from using the Mini, it's that we don't want to add to our already horrible cap situation.

Your right, but my point is if we didn't have to take on a bad contract I believe we would use the mini mid.

Maybe your right, but I think they are saying "no more" cap additions at this point, sad but true, I'm afraid this is our team, One through Six we are not bad with the addition of Jamison, But our bench is HORRIBLE... But I'm afrad Mitch is done.

I don't know the situation w J.Rich and Nash, but if their problems have been resolved and we take his contract instead of Turks than we would have somebody to backup Kobe. That's the reason I believe we are waiting to see exactly what pieces we need once it all unfolds. Imagine getting a guy like Meeks than getting J. Rich??

Good news.Lakers just got beat out for Grant Hill and Mayo by western conference teams.Time to make moves to improve the bench.I like Jamison and Jordan Hill and O'Neal i respect and welcome his size and toughness.

Wow, if that's true Jamison took a MAJOR reduction to come play with us, he could have gotten much much more from Charlotte or I'm sure many teams would offer the Vet minimum, I love the guy already for that!!

Love the attitude. We won't need O'Neal for more than 10-15 a game rebounding, blocking shots and committing some good fouls.

I think with the Lakers signing extra bigs has a lot to do w/ D12's back. Cuz if he is not ready for training camp or the start of the season then we will need those extra bigs.

Antawn Jamison will sign his deal with the Lakers later this week. As for O’Neal, Spears reported he’s working out for LA today.

Not outraged or shocked as with the Grant Hill news as this comes the day LA and Orlando meet to talk with Jrich or Turk as added baggage. Whoever is the extra with Dwight they will need minutes behind Kobe and Ron in a split, and Hill and them wouldn't be happy with 10-15 minutes, nor would it be cost effective

Did you really believe Mayo was a possibility? He could get more money and playing time in Dallas. Lakers couldnt offer that. Thats not getting beat

I agree sir.The Lakers are going to fill up there bench with Magic players included in the Dwight Howard trade to the Lakers.Lakers are going to be okay on the bench.

It is what it is.The Lakers are going to be looking for the best options in free agency.I was not sure about O.J. coming to the Lakers,i was about 15% thinking yes and 85% no.

I seriously doubt the Lakers are even considering Dwight anymore, I mean think about it, they get a one year rental, they get a guy who doesn't want to be here either, and has possible back issues, AND we take on horrible contracts, add millions of dollars to our already horrible cap space situation.

Dwight deal is dead IMO>

Damn, who they gonna sign next? We need to get younger, not older. Shannon Brown anyone? I loved his athleticism back when he was a Laker.

I'm liking the idea of Barbosa more and more. Give us that scoring and speed spark off the bench that we've been missing. Could be a nice compliment to Jamison's scoring in the second unit. But what's his price?

So if we get Jamison and oneal our team looks like this...

Nash/Blake
Kobe/????
MWP/????/Ebanks
Pau/Jamison
Bynum/Oneal

So if we do trade for Dwight we need a backup 2 or 3. Courtney lee, Barbosa, Belinelli, Brandon rush are still available but I doubt we get any of those.

True, but the signing of Jamison is great.

Jamison hasn't signed anything yet, nor declared his intentions to do so...so let's not put the cart before the horse. As it is right now, the bench is worse than last year. Mitch better be working the phones and come up with something, or this Nash acquisition will be for nothing...
