I really recommend this to all of you die hard basketball fanatics watch this before it gets taking down on youtube. I was born in 92 so obviously I wasn't able to watch the dream team. It's a really good documentary on how the Dream Team put there egos aside to win the Gold for USA. Watch it and save while you can.

Really looking forward to watching this. I was born in 92 also so I didn't get to see them play but I imagine it would've been awesome.

Here's a torrent link if the youtube video gets taken down:

Fortunately I have this http://freecorder.com/ Makes it easy to download youtube videos or even save audio from youtube if you just want songs.

Hey Fish!

I read a couple very good books about the Dream Team so I was going to pass on the documentary. But since you recommended it so much, I taped it tonight off the NBA channel and will watch late Saturday Night.

Thanks for the bringing the quality of the show to my attention. I look forward to it.

By the way, I have every Dream Team game on VHS including their Olympic qualifying prelim games and tournaments. The legendary Chick Hearn was hired to do the broadcast of the Olympic games for a special Olympic feed and that was the feed I taped for the Olympic games. I wanted Chick and no other!

Does that date me? lol.

Haha, I was only able to listen to the great Chick Hearn for a couple of years before he passed away. I've heard many people even state that listening to him through the radio also made it feel like if you were at the game watching it. That's how great he was, unfortunately I only enjoy Stu Lantz (even though a lot of lakers fans don't enjoy listening to him). Much better than Ralph Lawler I would say lol. I'm truly jealous of people like you who were able to witness All Time greats like Michael and Magic. . . ah. . . what a dream.

Fish,

I like Stu as well. He is not a gabber, he understands the game and is not a homer. He tells it like it is.

I understand what you mean when you say you wish you could have seen Magic, MJ and others. As great as Kobe is, watching Magic was by far the most exciting, enthralling and beautiful basketball experience I have ever had. You really had to see him, game after game, season and after season, year after year, series after series, to understand the true majesty of what he brought. He was the most unique player in NBA history back then, and now, all these years later, still is. His skills and brand of ball he brought were insane. If Magic and that Showtime team existed now, how good they were, how they played like no other team before or since, people here on LTB would be going nuts. Seriously. Nuts. And we would win so many titles it would be silly.

I am jealous of those here who saw Wilt and the Big O and Russell and West and Baylor and others. Can't imagine how great they were. I know I had to see them to understand it, and I never will.

All that being said, I would gladly miss all of it to be your age, lol. In fact, I would rather be born today, and miss Shaq and Kobe if I could. There comes a point when aging past a certain point is not a good thing. Something you will find out down the road. Nothing beats being young.

Speaking of aging, it was interesting to see the changes in the faces of all those players from then to now. All have more wrinkles of course, but I am talking about the structural changes.

Jordan, Robinson, Ewing had angular, bony faces when young. Now all three of them are kind of puffy, rolly polly faced, lol. They really look a lot different.

Others look much the same. Barkley looks the same. Perhaps because even back then, he had that fat, rolly polly face. Pippen looks much the same. Still a very lean face. Malone looks much the same too. And then you have Stockon, lol. He looks old. But he looked old when we was 25. If you dyed his hair black again, he honestly looks just about as he did his last five or six years in the league.

One of the interesting things about that team was Isiah Thomas being excluded. He certainly deserved to be on that team as much as any player. Two time champion, hall of fame creds, an all time great. A consummate competitor with a will to win as strong as anyone's.

But he was so hated by so many. Especially Jordan. There was a story going around back then that if Zeke was selected, Jordan made it clear he would not go. I believe that story. And I think in the end, it was the major reason he was left off. I mean think about it, he was off the team and Christian Laettner was on it! What a travesty. But MJ knew his power, how to use it and also how to get his pound of flesh from those he disliked.

That incident was one of the reasons Zekes and Magics very close friendship started to dissolve. Zeke felt Magic didn't stick up for him to get him on the team. But the fact is, Magic knew Jordan would get his way and he decided not to stick his neck out for his friend. Judge him as you will for that decision.

Was a really good documentary. They should have put the time when they players were playing cards and Jordan and Magic started to argue who was better to such a heated degree, Bird had to step in and end the conversation because it was getting out of hand. That was a fascinating inside look at both Jordan, Magic and Bird and really was one of the most interesting things to happen. Barkely and Ewing were part of that card game and conversation and tried to engage in it that they should be in the mix with the other greats for consideration as the best. Bird told them, "You guys have not won anything. You have no say in this. You don't belong so shut up." And they did. In fact, Barkley left the room, lol.

Ouch!

FISH+, I think you're in good company with liking Stu Lantz, but I understand that some people don't like his "chill" approach. They like people with their hair on fire. I've heard several professional analysts pay their respects to Stu though and how much they like to listen to him because of what they learn about the game when they do. That's saying a lot. Part of that I think is because he's not the typical "homer" when it comes to talking about the game. He'll criticize the Lakers just as soon as he'll praise them. BTW, Chick was somewhat the same way. That's probably why they worked so well together.

Stu is a bit of an oddity in that he's run his Big Man Camp for so long now. That seems to be his niche. I say that's an oddity because he wasn't a big in his playing days. But he loves the bigs and loves trying to help them out.

Randy (SPQR) -- simply awesome comments about Magic and his era up above! I know it was only a reply, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. As you know, I might give a left nut to have the Lakers return to playing the way they played under Magic Johnson's Showtime leadership. But I'm closer and closer to thinking it will never happen again. That's really sad. The basketball played during that period by the Purple and Gold was just riveting.

Dan,

Thanks for the nice words.

As a comtemporary, someone who saw all of Showtime and Magic, like me, you understand what I am talking about. And I understand about you giving up the left nut, lol. Yeah, Magic and that team were that special.

Kobe was incrediable in his scoring. But Magic brought sooooo much more than that as an individual player and a team player. The spell he cast on a game and his teamates and his opponents went so much beyond scoring, even a sublimely transcendent scorer like Kobe. Not a knock on Kobe. But Magic was just something so rare, so unique, so special in so many ways it still is hard to believe he existed. And there there has not been a player like him before or since.

One thing Dan, when Magic retired, when that Showtime era ended, I KNEW I would never see its equal EVER again. Nor would I ever see a player like that again. I knew I would never get the thrills or love a team or a player like that again, because he and they were just that special.

And after the great Shaq and Threepeat, and the great Kobe and his titles and career, after all that, I understand now more than ever that I was dead right back then. I will never see a player like Magic or a team like that team again, no matter who plays for us or how long I live.

I think I would bet both my nuts that you feel exactly the same way for the same reasons.

We saw it, Dan. We understand what he was. Oh brother what he was, lol.

I watched the documentary this weekend. It was very good, and I laughed and smiled pretty much the whole way through. I was LMAO at the part where they described the Dream Team's trip to Monte Carlo. You can tell that the Dream Team players REALLY enjoyed that trip. Who wouldn't? They were young millionaires on a beautiful beach, surrounded by countless gorgeous bikini clad women (many of whom were topless Smile )LOL.

I particularly liked the story about when Patrick Ewing was just relaxing on the beach in Monte Carlo and not really signing autographs.... until an attractive young topless woman came over and asked for his autograph. Naturally Ewing was gracious enough to sign the autograph for the topless woman. HAHA. LMAO! In Ewing's shoes, I would have done the same Razz

Damn SPQR, even you're responses amuse me, haha. It's great to read other member's thought's on team's I wasn't fortunate enough to witness myself, Especially coming from a poster as knowledgeable as you.

RRTX,

Yes, you are exactly right. Although I do love it when the analysts go crazy after a great play I enjoy Stu's chill approach just as much. Like you said, It helps that he isn't a Laker Homer. I love it when he starts calling players out despite them being lakers. It doesn't matter if it was a laker or non laker making a bad decision, he will be all over that player immediately. There aren't many like Stu, and I'm enjoying listening to him while I still can.

Lakeshow,

That Ewing Part was funny as hell. What I really enjoyed was Magic's Story telling. He just bring everything he does to life, whether it be the way he played the game, or the way he described the dream team's practice, he's always been energetic. It was great listening to him talk about the 5 on 5 practice between his team and Jordan's.

SPQR,

On another note, I know I've said this many times before but LTB is lucky to have you and many other great posters on this site like VS, Lakeshow, Mojo, RRTX, 4Lakers, Lakers4Kobe, R3P, LakerBloke, gemfow, Cuckooroller (Where's he been???) and others I'm forgetting off the top of my head.

You guys make LTB a great forum. It's fun talking basketball with you guys. Especially during the long off seasons haha.

Fish,

Yup, these off-seasons can be uneventful when the Lakers lose early. LOL. Thankfully there always seems to be something NBA related to talk about.

I also enjoyed Magic's take on the Dream Team. You could tell he really enjoyed competing against Jordan, who was hands down the single most dominant basketball force in the world at that point in history. Magic was more than a year removed from his final NBA season and he was no longer at the top of his game; yet that competitiveness and pride in Magic, who had enjoyed so much success in his career, caused him to have a hard time relinquishing the status as the world's best player.

Unfortunately for Magic, 92' Dream Team Jordan was pretty much the most dominant version of Jordan in history. He was at the height of his greatness in terms of both physical superiority and in terms of being a proven champion and leader. Jordan just had everything going for him back in those days.

It's interesting how just a few short years can change things so dramatically in sports. For example, it was barely 3 years ago when Kobe was still the league's best player. He was a basketball stud who had barely turned 30, a league MVP, an NBA Finals MVP, and he was the best player in the world on the league's elite championship team; a Lakers squad filled with extremely talented stars who were all in the prime of their careers.

Now here we are, just a few years later and it's obvious that things have changed so much. It's no longer aging Kobe's league, but it now belongs to the likes of Durant and Lebron. It must have been quite a realization for Magic when he finally understood that it was young Jordan's league in 92' and Magic would forever be an entity of the past. Just as Magic and Kobe were passed up, the same thing will eventually happen to Lebron at some point in the future, and then again to Durant when the next young star rises up to take the torch from him. Such is the nature of the NBA and sports in general.

Thanks for the nice words. There are many terrific members here. They are both smart and engaging and funny too. I agree with all you said. You are also one the many fans here who add so much to the site. You are right there with all the others you mentioned. Always love reading your posts. I know I am one of so many who does.

Randy, back when I was living in LA I remember listening to a pre-game radio talk show with Chick Hearn and Stu Lantz taking call-in questions. And it was before one of the huge playoffs games during the Shaq/Kobe 3-peat years.

Anyway...the caller asked Chick about his own comparisons of the Showtime era teams vs. the Kobe/Shaq 2000's teams. His answer wasn't so shocking to me, but the force with which he gave his answer was very stunning at the time. Chick said that he had great respect for the current team (Shaq/Kobe) but that there was absolutely no way in the world that they would beat the Showtime era team. And he stated emphatically that it wouldn't even be close. The caller was kind of shocked and obviously a little bit hurt by Chick's answer too. It was quite a moment.

His main reason was not the star-loaded nature of the 80's teams even though that's undeniable. But his answer centered around the presence of Magic Johnson and how he made the team so unselfish from top to bottom. He simply would not allow it to be any other way. Otherwise, how do you gather such an absolutely amazing collection of talent while to a man...all of them couldn't care less about who scored or even who made the assist or got a rebound. It was always just an all-out, joyful team effort. I swear that as good as Magic was at making great assists, he was just as happy to be the guy who made a pass leading to a different teammate making an assist. That means everything when it comes to a team. Nothing was centered around just one guy and everyone knew that everyone else was contributing to their success. It had to be unbelievable fun to play on those teams. I KNOW it was pure basketball joy to watch.

As for my nuts...well...I have trouble remembering whether it was the left or right one that can go.... Wink

Thanks for the dialogue all. This is such a fun thread thanks to y'all. Love it!

Dan,

Great story about Chick. Thanks for sharing it. I love to hear those kinds of opinions and stories about old time basketball people. His answer doesn't surprise me. He was around a long time. Going all the way back to West and Baylor. He saw them all. The Lakers and the greats on other teams. He understood just what a strange and exotic thing Magic was. A true original. Something never seen before or since. He also realized just how much Magic affected his team and teammates. Not just because of what he could do, but what he made them do.

Its funny, in this era of Kobe Bryant taking all the shots and other players and coaches saying over and over, "We should have gone inside more," or, "I should have gotten more touches," here you had Magic playing with Kareem, Mcadoo, Worthy, Wilkes, Thompson, Scott and Magic himself could score as he wished, yet you NEVER heard any of these players saying, "I should have got more touches."

That was also a part of varied Magic effect. Just a part of the magic he worked on a team in so many ways. Chick knew what we did. He knew how special this guy was. A once in a lifetime player. In a million ways. That he would never see his equal. And he was right.

You guys are really lucky to have seen Magic's whole career. I envy you. I was born about 10 years too late to truly remember and appreciate Magic Johnson's greatness as it unfolded in real time for Laker fans. In fact, I was only about 10 years old when he retired, and I didn't really care much about the NBA at that age. LOL. I didn't start taking an active interest in the NBA until about 1996, when I was a Freshman in high school and the Lakers had just signed Shaquille O'Neal. I missed virtually all of Magic's career and the most I remember about him was watching a handful of Laker games when he made his comeback in 95'. LOL. Sucks to be me I guess. hehe

It really was a privilege to have seen all his career. But Steve...you of all people show such a deep, deep respect for the entire history of basketball and not just the current stars. That means far more. And just be happy you're younger anyway! Wink

The athletes of today's NBA are undeniably awesome and I love watching them play. And there's nothing magical (pun alert!) about players of the past per se. In theory at least, the same approach could easily be repeated today. And there are always glimpses of the same approach here and there anyway, but not with much consistency. Basketball is basketball, and a team-oriented game will always be more effective, regardless of the era. But the game itself really is radically different in recent years IMHO. And I'm really no fuddy duddy either. I love change when it's for the better.

There's nothing wrong with building the game strictly around your superstars, but I truly think a good deal of the joy of the game gets lost in the shuffle when teams do that so consistently and to the exclusion of the importance of the role of the "lesser" players. But it's abundantly clear that a whole generation of basketball fans has grown up to appreciate a risky, difficult shot done in pure offensive isolation far more than a well executed team play with the final result of an easy layup by anyone with the right colored jersey on the team. But I can tell you for sure which one I appreciate and get excited about more. However, who am I to say--maybe in truth the Lakers of the 80's did build their team around superstars--it's just that the superstars to a man didn't leave anyone else out of the picture along the way. And EVERYONE ended up happy as a result.

And just to show that I'm no respecter of eras--but more so of style--just imagine if Shaq and Kobe were both THAT unselfish and were always playing FOR each other. Sheeeeeit...forget about it!! They could have been nearly as good as the 80's teams, even though having a pg like Magic running the show was still the true glue.

Additionally, it's not talked about too much, but the 3-pt shot and the development of 3-pt specialists has also radically changed the game. But that's a different topic. LOL...

Dan,

Good stuff, man. I can see how much the game has changed. I watched a game from 1995 the other day on youtube (Magic's 1st comeback game LOL) and even then the game was different than what we see today.

In the grand scheme of things, I actually wish Michael Jordan had never come along and been as successful as he was. The concept of "hero ball" really started with Michael and while it may not be fair to lump it all on him, he was obviously the most influential player in changing how the game is played. I say this because before Michael, there was Larry and Magic, who's totally unselfish and team oriented passing style of game defined a generation. Had Jordan not come along, had Jordan not taken basketball to the next level, had he not enjoyed more success than Larry or Magic, and had he not ultimately become widely regarded as being a greater and more popular player than Larry and Magic, then perhaps all the future generations of players would have drawn more of their inspiration from Magic and Larry's style rather than MJ's.

That's why I'm one of the seemingly few Laker fans who can really respect and admire the way Lebron James plays the game. In a lot of ways, he's like a freakishly athletic throwback to the more unselfish team ball superstar style that led to so much success for Larry and Magic. I think it's great for the league that Lebron is on the verge of proving that such a great, pass-first, team-first guy like Lebron can still lead a team to the NBA's highest achievement: a world championship. Should the Heat find a way to close out this series VS OKC, I'm actually very happy for Lebron.

Personally, I'd much rather see future generations of players striving to play a style of game more similar to Lebron, and less like Jordan or Kobe.

Steve,

I can tell by your deep rooted love of the NBA and its history and by the style of play you prefer that you would freaked out watching those Showtime Lakers and what Magic Johnson did on the court for his team and against his opponents. I have no doubt you would have fallen in love with this guy, his insane talents, the things he could do that no other player has yet to emulate. I wish you had been lucky enough Steve, to live through those days and seen what some of us did. It would be so great to exchange thoughts and ideas. Even more so, I wish LTB had existed back then. It would have been ridiculous fun to follow Magic and those teams every regular season game their playoff battles those championship wars with legendary teams like Dr. Js 76ers, Birds Celts and Isiah's Bad Boys.

Man that would have been LTB like nothing else! Just like Magic and that team were like nothing else.

I would shy away from those old comeback vids, Steve. I hated when he came back simply because I knew at his age after that layoff, he would only be a shell of his old self. And he was. I would say that Magic was 50 percent, if that, of the real Magic. That old forward was still one of the best forwards in the game, but he was not Magic anymore. I hated when he said he was coming back and even as good as he was in that forward incarnation, I hated watching him.

If you wish to see some of the real prime time Magic, there is a site called Ioffer that sells all kinds of movies and sports videos from vendors. I have bought reams of old boxing vids there from fighters who plied their trade long before I was born. Seller there also have a very large collection of the Showtime Lakers prime Magic Johnson game. I think almost every championship series he was in is there and also some other regular season games and playoff games.

While it certainly is not close to what I and Dan and Marvin and few others experienced, getting to watch him in every game, all season long from 1979 to 1991, it is as close as you can get all these years later.

If you have the money, (they are not expensive) the time and inclination to watch these old games, I would suggest you grab every single game of Showtime sold on that site. You will get to see the greatest team and fast break in history, you will get to see Jabbar, Wilkes, Worthy, Mcadoo, Cooper, Nixon, Thompson, Rambis, Scott and all the great players on that team, including the incomparable Magic at their best.

In fact, anyone here who is curious to see that team and those players would really enjoy getting and viewing those vids. It would give you some idea of why he got that name Magic and how in so many ways he made that team play a brand of ball that no other team ever could before or since.

Haha, I can just imagine the thread titles now:

"Kareem is too old"

"Riley jinxed us"

"Could the Lakers trade for Jordan?"

"Magic not to re-sign?"

"McGee and Rambis for McHale?

I love hearing Marvin talk about his days of watching Wilt play in his pre-Lakers true prime as an athlete too. I saw several years of Wilt's career with all the games that were on national tv...which probably wasn't all that much. BUT...I'm kind of in the same boat re: Wilt's career. He was unbelievable when I saw him play, but truthfully his absolute best years were already gone by when I became an NBA fan as a kid. I have to imagine somewhat just how good he really was...and I know for a fact that his gawdy stats do not lie.

Steve, that was severely eloquent above re: Magic, Bird, Jordan and now LeBron. I feel you bro. I think it would be nearly impossible to nail that era and the changes in basketball down better than you did.

I'll never be a LeBron James fan unless he becomes a Laker by some odd stroke, but I have admired the way he plays the game almost from the very beginning of his career. I know that's a hella thing to say on a Lakers board, but we're all blind if we can't recognize excellence elsewhere too. He may not be the cold-blooded individual isolation "closer" that everyone seems to admire so much, but the dude is hellbent on simply making the right team play. I will fuggin' absolutely NEVER criticize him for that. To me it's what makes him so good and so much more of a threat FOR his team. He may be the most freakishly athletic player in the history of the NBA...but lo and behold...he's not a selfish player. Go figure. And people are gonna criticize him for THAT! Oh hell no. Barking up the wrong tree with that for me. If he spearheads a return to better team basketball in the NBA then more power to him.

I don't blame Michael Jordan at all for the path his career took. I actually think he was a relatively unselfish player too and he had a great basketball background under Dean Smith and the coaching staff at North Carolina. But his extreme individual talent and drive to excel was fortunately (or unfortunately) just perfect for the massive NBA media campaign that the NBA decided to embark on in the 90's. To me it seemed like they trusted the stars more than they trusted the love of the game. As you know, it was practically like no one else even existed in the NBA. I truly HATED that. But again, I don't really think it was Jordan's fault that everyone wanted to "Be Like Mike." It was pretty twisted IMO and I can't help but think that it impacted the way later players played on the court.

Hey, back onto the Dream Team video...for anyone who watches it...be sure to catch the part about John Stockton ditching the team bus to walk along the streets of Barcelona and see the sites with his family. It's so damn hilarious that NO ONE even recognizes him as being a member of the Dream Team. And he even talks with a guy from the U.S. about the team and the guy doesn't have a clue who he is! Just cracked me UP! BTW...there is no disrespect intended by me toward Stockton in bringing this up. That's the part that is so ironic, because the guy was an absolutely awesome point guard and basketball player in general. He set career records in total assists and steals that may never be broken.
