Repped High Quality Post
The Los Angeles Lakers need to seriously consider bringing in free agent Brandon Roy for the 2012-2013 NBA season.

According to ESPN's Chris Palmer, via Twitter:

chris palmer@ESPNChrisPalmer
Someone who could help the Lakers: Brandon Roy. Based on what I'm told he could be back in the league next year.
31 May 12

We all know that Roy retired from the NBA due to a degenerative knee issue. ESPN reported on the story back in December 2011, when Roy said, "I love the game, I love the Portland Trail Blazers and I love our fans, but after consulting with my doctors, I will seek a determination that I've suffered a career ending injury, pursuant to the rules of the collective bargaining agreement."

Apparently, Roy has changed his tune. He must have had a recent breakthrough that gives him hope he can rejuvenate his career.

If the Lakers were to acquire Roy, he'd be signed at a significant discount, to be sure. He wouldn't be asked to put in a ton of minutes, either. And if there's any chance at all he can play at a high level for 15 minutes a night, he'd be a tremendous boon for the Lakers.

They don't have anything to lose by signing him to an incentive-based contract. The worst thing that could happen is that he ends up retiring for a second time if his knees once again fail him. But if they draft the contract correctly, the Lakers would essentially be on the hook for very little in that case.

Roy to the Lakers next season?

The best thing that could happen is that Roy's knees are actually on the mend, and he comes off the bench to score 10 points a game for the Lakers next season.

Roy was a natural scorer. If he's healthy enough to play, the Lakers shouldn't hesitate to sign him to a vet-minimum contract. They need the firepower off the bench.

Kobe Bryant evidently has mad respect for Roy, too, per Palmer's Twitter account:

chris palmer@ESPNChrisPalmer
Kobe's respect for Roy is huge. Saw them getting along great at All-Star 2010.

Perhaps this is all just a pipe dream, but Roy in a Lakers uniform next year sounds like a win-win to me.

I don't know about anyone else but I'd happily take a chance on a 1 year deal with Brandon Roy at vet minimum..Say we win a championship it would be hard to resign him but a good risk.

Sure he was the second best shooting guard in the western conference for years.Michael Redd came back strong from serious knee injuries and surgeries. Also it is a very advanced medical world out there now.

Anything is possible look at Grant Hill and Michael Redd and so many other players who came all the way back from serious injuries.I say the Lakers should sign him to a make good contact a veteran minimum deal.

I wish Brandon Roy the best and i hope like crazy the Lakers give him a chance to play with Kobe Bryant and the Lakers.

If he could be a knock down 3 point shooter it would be great, but maybe a defensive liability.

He should look into that "Kobe" knee procedure and if healthy signed with LAL.

I say no. He should be the last option for Mitch if they can't get some better names in f.a. Its to much of a liability to sign this dude due to his knees. Pass on him and let's go get someone else who would also come for cheap and who is in basketball shape.

he'd be no liability. if they sign him for the vets min and a well done contract, and his knees turn out to be good enough he'll be a big asset. If they don't hold up he simply won't play, or will be waived or something. No big deal. PLS SIGN HIM MITCH!

What a shocker. Another name attached to the lakers. Okay the pattern is once again happening, every name is attached to the Lakers, what the Lakers should do and this is suppose to be journalism?

Obviously a lot of names would be attached not only to the Lakers but also to some or most teams in the NBA. The offseason is coming. We'll just have to wait until rumors turn into transaction news.

I say yes because he brings leadership that the lakers need on/off court. Since dfish is gone, we can get a proven star and clutch player. BUT problem is his injury. He will be another T-Mac, an ineffective star. Over summer he should try the germany treatment.

Yeah He was considered to be a proven star and vocal leader of the Blazers. Alridge and him carried the team to the playoffs. He has been in the league for about 5 years. So he is a 5yr vet. Come on man, you should know this. Its either you hate him or the blazers organization in general.

Yup.. Peter Vecsey is reputed and reliable. I hope Roy and Lakers reach an agreement quickly and really hope Roy is healthy. He would be a fantastic addition and can back up Kobe or play at the 3.

He should go to Germany to do the 'Kobe treatment'. Nevermind... his problems with his knees is far worse than Kobe's and Bynums.

He's had 3 surgeries on both knees. I remember him having 2 in college. Will the overseas surgery really help?

If Roy ever returns to the NBA, it'll probably be at least 2 or 3 years before he's NBA ready. It's sort of like how long it took for Grant Hill to make a true comeback, and unfortunately Roy will probably never be half the player he once was (just like Hill). Sad but likely true.

Roy could have had a Hall of Fame career. Now he's lucky if he'll ever get to come off the bench on an NBA team.

^^Tmac may get reinvigorated playing for the Lakers -- get him on a great diet plan, he can play still maybe another 2 solid years. Hey, he's a year younger than the Kobester I think...Tmac has always been good at playmaking...But again, not to many old fogeys and washed up dudes looking to squat on the possibility of another ring, we need hungry, go get-it type dudes, no slouches!

In this video Tony Wroten( from Seattle) is being interviewed by Golden State for the upcoming draft, He mentions something interesting, he says that he has been working out with Brandon Roy in L.A! He also says that he is looking pretty good. Coming off the bench would be nice, but i don't see the Lakers picking him just like when we were looking at Gilbert Arenas. How did he do with the Grizzlies in the Playoffs?

Will Brandon Roy make his NBA comeback as a Laker? While the question of Roy possibly teaming up with Kobe Bryant remains unanswered, Sportando reveals that during the last few days, Roy was indeed " L.A. bound.

Sources close to the player confirmed, "Brandon (Roy) landed in Los Angeles on Monday and is scheduled to leave on Friday."

During his stay in L.A. it is unknown whether or not Roy met with the Lakers' coaching or medical staff, however, he is currently undergoing a series of private medical procedures on his knees. "Tuesday was the first of a series of treatment Roy's going through. He's doing something similar to the treatment Kobe Bryant had on his right knee. It can only help," added the source.

Those who've recently seen and played Roy are convinced he's a much better player then he was in the past (which is kind of scary). Recent rumors circulating around the United States are indicating that the Lakers showed interest in the Former 2007 Rookie of the Year.

That said, "Roy is positively thinking about coming back next season. We like L.A. a lot. Growing up, the Lakers were Brandon's favorite team."

If we do get him I hope we get him for 2 years that way if he turns out to be good we have him under what should be a pretty cheap contract for 2 years.

Yes if he signs a 1 yr 2nd yr option contract. If he can come back and play at his old form even at 70%, he would totally benefit the bench and team as a whole. He can back up Kobe to provide some offense and is also versatile enough to play PG so he and Kobe can be on the floor together thus allowing spacing on the floor for every weapon on the lakers to operate.

I would be all for picking up Roy if he's able to play even if he's only half of what he was.

But...

Didn't the doctors tell him that if he kept playing he probably wouldn't be able to walk by the time he was 40 or 50, or something like that? Why would you want to do that to yourself. No idea if that is truly the case, but I thought I remembered reading that somewhere. If it is true, I hope, for his sake, that he doesn't try to make a comeback.

People will see what he looks like when he plays in Crawfords Pro AM league and that could be the determining factor of weather or not he is signed

^^^if he balls, then alot of teams are willing to look at him. Question is, does he want to come back to a contender, or a place that pays his butt some good money

I don't think any team is willing to pay his butt good money. One performance in a ProAm may intrigue teams, but only to an extent. Teams will be wary of the upkeep his body will need to maintain through a full season, and his health has always been, and will continue to be, a huge variable.

Maybe there's a foolish team out there that's willing to promise him a big role and a large paycheck, but it's going to take a super desperate team.

Nevertheless, there will be interest across the league. The Lakers would be wise to keep both of their eyes on him this summer, and stay in contact so that a potential move here is possible. The positives outweigh the negatives by far.

Assuming he's healthy, Roy on the Lakers would be an awesome idea. He'd be a guy that can facilitate and create his own shot, not to mention showing up in the clutch.

Thinking about it makes me think that if he is as good as reports are saying then there is a pretty good chance he wont come to the Lakers. I could be wrong though maybe right now if he comes back its not about the money and its about winning or maybe he wants to come to a team that has a good sg so he could come off of the bench so he doesnt put alot wear on his legs like he would with a team that would need him to play alot of minutes.

I highly doubt he's looking to be "the guy" on any team. I don't even think he's looking to be a starter. He knows better than anyone else that his body won't let him take on the same responsibilities as he did before. He said that he wants to get back to playing basketball, that's it.

I think a sixth man role would be ideal, IF his play justifies it, of course.
