Kobe Bryant earns All-NBA Defensive 2nd Team Honors
Quote:
For the 12th time in his 16 seasons, Kobe Bryant was named to the NBA’s All-Defensive team, earning his third Second Team nod after six straight First Team appearances from 2006-2011.
Here are the two teams, as voted upon by the NBA’s 30 head coaches:
NBA All-Defensive First Team: Chris Paul, Tony Allen, LeBron James, Serge Ibaka, Dwight Howard
NBA All-Defensive Second Team: Rajon Rondo, Kobe Bryant, Luol Deng, Kevin Garnett, Tyson Chandler
Bryant was named to the First Team in 2000, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011, and the Second in 2001, 2002 and this season.
He received 17 total points, with seven first team votes and three second team votes, getting the fourth guard spot. Andre Iguodala actually received more overall points with 19 (four first team votes), but was the fifth forward on the list.
Bryant was helped by the rim protection of Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol, and by Metta World Peace taking on the challenge of defending the opponent’s best perimeter player on most nights, though in the postseason Bryant did step up to take on many difficult assignments particularly late in games. He’d likely admit that his defense throughout a full game isn’t what it once was, when his legs were younger, but he clearly retains the full respect of the NBA’s head coaches.

Kobe Bryant off All-Defensive first team for first time since 2005
By Mike Bresnahan
May 23, 2012, 11:34 a.m.
Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has been on the NBA's All-Defensive first team every year since 2005.
Not any longer.
Bryant was second team All-Defensive this season, the NBA announced Wednesday.
The Clippers' Chris Paul and Memphis' Tony Allen were the guards selected to the first team, which was rounded out by Miami forward LeBron James, Oklahoma City forward Serge Ibaka and Orlando center Dwight Howard.
In addition to Bryant, the second team consisted of Boston guard Rajon Rondo, Boston forward Kevin Garnett, Chicago forward Luol Deng and New York center Tyson Chandler,
Bryant has been first-team All-Defensive nine times in his 16-year career.
Somewhat surprisingly, Andrew Bynum received no votes from the panel, which consisted of the 30 NBA head coaches. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players.
Metta World Peace had three second-team votes but was 23rd overall on the list of players who received votes.

Because these 1st and 2nd teams are based off potential and reputation and don't take into account Howard's injury. |

It's all based on reputation. Kobe's had a reputation for being a good defender his whole career, so he still gets the votes, even though his defensive consistency level is nowhere near where it used to be. IMHO, Thabo Sefolosha got screwed and he should have been voted to the 2nd team instead of Kobe. |

| Bryant's defense on Sefolosha and Harden in the postseason is amazing though . Harden shot 39 percent? or so in the series. not bad |

Fixed.
I can't see how a fastbreak shot blocker deserves 1st team. Luol and Iggy deserve it more, but its a popularity award. Howard over Chandler goes to show you. |

Deng is the real deal defensively. He's one of the best defenders in the NBA.
I hate to say it, but the least deserving of a defensive award on the list is Kobe. I have no problem with him getting it though. Awards are always a popularity contest. He's been screwed out of other recognition in his career enough. |

If it is based on talents and what he can do, then Kobe might be the best guard defender in the league.
But if it is based on actual performance and stats, then kobe should not be in the conversation.
He has the skills and when needed he is a shutdown defender, but due to his age and mileage in the NBA, he cant do it consistently.
I love you Kobe, but it is the darn damn truth. |

Deng was consistently more effective as a defender than MWP this season, yes. |

I'd say yes too. He's a totally different type of defender though. The Lakers depend on Peace almost entirely for on-the-ball stoppage. The Lakers defense would suck beyond belief without Metta's individual ability and intensity. He covers a lot of player's weaknesses. But Deng is also a fantastic team defender, and especially under the coaching of Thibodeau. |

Kobe would probably be the first to admit that he ain't where he used to be defensively but he can turn it back for just about a quarter at most every game.
If this list is based off of potential, then it makes sense ( Although I'd have Iggy over Deng everyday, have Serge Ibaka nowhere near my PF spot, move Garnett to first team and Duncan to 2nd team and even Wade might have a sound argument against Kobe ) but if it is based off the season, I'd say Bradley, Iggy, MWP got shafted pretty badly. |
