NEW ORLEANS -- Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant will not play Monday night against the New Orleans Hornets, sitting out a second consecutive game with an inflamed left shin.
Longtime Lakers trainer Gary Vitti evaluated Bryant on Monday morning and said Bryant's condition is improving, but that the 16-year veteran still needs more rest.
Bryant wore a walking boot following shootaround Monday and chatted with teammate Ramon Sessions on the bench, but declined to speak to reporters.
Lakers coach Mike Brown said Devin Ebanks would "most likely" start in Bryant's place -- as Ebanks did in the Lakers' 125-105 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Saturday.

| Good... A decent time to get his rest, and see if this team can step up as a whole to improve their playoff chances. |

Anybody else a bit scared that an "inflamed tendon sheath" sounds more like overuse than it does injury? I'm not a medical expert in any sense, but I'm wondering if they're holding back a bit on the prognosis for Kobe's full recovery. Some injuries can just nag you to death until you simply just give it time...and then some more time.
I don't mean to be negative. I like our starters vs. the Spurs starters come Wednesday and beyond. But when you think about those guys using 13 well prepared and well rested players vs. our tightened and tired rotation of 8 (or now 7) players, it makes me a little apprehensive. Yeah, I know we have to think about the Hornets first, but down the road is really looking tough for this Lakers team. There's no time or space in the standings to rest, but we have to somehow. Unfortunately, some players have been taking their rest on the court and we're losing games that we shouldn't. |

If the Lakers lose this game, then we know there's a serious problem with this team. They'll drop behind the Clippers in the standings and they'll be tied with the Grizzlies in the loss column. These Lakers players better all be hustling and playing hard, especially on defense.
They gotta beat these bad teams because with 3 games against the Spurs, and 1 game against the Thunder still left on the Lakers' schedule, there's a good chance the Lakers could drop all the way down to the 5th seed, and they won't have HCA against anybody.
Remember, only 1 single team in the entire history of the NBA has won a championship when seeded so low and forced to win every series without home court advantage. So the odds are not in the Lakers favor if they drop to a 5th seed or lower. |

I agree, we gotta beat NOH or elsw we are in trouble.
I'm Also excited to see ebanks do well, I think if he plays well he might crack the rotation again. I think we could use his youth and athleticism |

Jack is out too?!? OMFG, if the Lakers don't win this one now that arguably the Hornets' best and most consistent player is not playing, anyone who's still on the "we will win a title this year" bandwagon deserves to be slapped. LOL |

Oh, I didn't realize Gordon was back. Okay, then I can understand if the Lakers lose this game. Gordon can go off for 30 or 40 points on any given night. When Gordon was with the Clippers he would kill the Lakers, even when Kobe was around to guard him.
The Lakers' defense is so poor in the last several weeks that every single opponent has a good chance to beat the Lakers. |

So its not a foregone conclusion just yet or this a strategic ploy by the Hornets. |

| This only shows how Kobe's presence on the floor alone will do wonders for the Lakers. The fact that he's the focal point of the defense of the opponents will make his teammates' activity great. |

| With fresh legs, I take Lakers first team over any team. Coach needs to make sure to pace it out properly. It might not be a bad idea to play Kobe only against Spurs and OKC games. Lakers second team is the concern. Hopefully the remaining games would polish our second team. |

Over the years, the Lakers have been just as lucky as they are good. This luck extends to David Stern vetoing a deal that would have ruined us. Would you rather have CP3 and no Pau as opposed to Sesssions and Pau? Of course, hiring Mike the Clown was not a very good move, luck or otherwise.
Now we are lucky Kobe is injured. Becuase if the Clown had his way, Kobe would be used like a mule for close to 40 minutes a game. Now he gets to rest.
I think our chances to win a title are pretty good. |

Excatly, Was saying the same thing in another thread, Gasol + sessions > Paul
Also, kobe's injury isnt an overuse and can be better compared to a cut, where a cut isnt much of an injury but needs to limit activities for it to heal and not to open up. Knowing kobe's toughness, im sure coaching staff are relieved they cn force kobe to take a rest |

Kobe Bryant won't play vs. Spurs
SAN ANTONIO -- The condition of Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant's inflamed left shin continues to improve, but Bryant will sit out his third consecutive game Wednesday against the San Antonio Spurs, Lakers coach Mike Brown said.
Bryant
Bryant did not participate in Lakers practice on Tuesday at Antioch Community Sports Complex in San Antonio and declined to speak to reporters. One sign of Bryant's improvement, however, was the absence of a protective boot covering his left shin as he walked out of the gymnasium.
Bryant suffered the injury on March 31 when he was kicked in the shin during the first quarter of the Lakers' 88-85 win over the New Orleans Hornets.
He sat out the Lakers' past two games, a 125-105 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Saturday and a 93-91 win over the Hornets on Monday. By opting to sit out against San Antonio, Bryant will have had a full week's worth of rest come Friday should he decide to suit up at home against the Denver Nuggets.
"Really, the only way to stop (the inflammation) is to shut him down," longtime Lakers trainer Gary Vitti said Saturday.
Vitti re-evaluated Bryant on Monday in New Orleans and Tuesday in San Antonio and reported improvements after each examination. Bryant's status remains day to day, according to the team.
As of Tuesday, the Lakers held a 1½ game over the Los Angeles Clippers for the third seed in the Western Conference playoff standings. The Lakers trail the second-seeded Spurs by 5½ games. In a quirk of the lockout-compressed schedule, the Lakers' game against the Spurs on Wednesday marks the first meeting out of three scheduled in the next 10 days after the two teams failed to match up through the first 58 games of the season.
More on the Lakers
For more news and notes on the Lakers, check out the Land O' Lakers blog from the Kamenetzky brothers. Blog
"The good part about it is we'll have a couple more shots at it," Brown said when asked if he was disappointed he wouldn't have his full roster for a key game against the Spurs. "We're not too worried about that. It's OK that it's taking time for him to get right."
Devin Ebanks, who has averaged 9.0 points starting at shooting guard in Bryant's absence (a significant jump from his season average of 3.1 points) is expected to maintain the starting role again against San Antonio.
In the meantime, Brown welcomes having Bryant on the bench in an unofficial assistant coaching role.
"I felt like (Bryant) really brought the group closer together (against New Orleans) because he was so engaged with what we had going on throughout the entire course of the game, whether it was with the coaches or with the players or with the players and coaches together," Brown said. "He was always in the mix and when you see your leader like that in the mix, it kind of makes everybody else want to be a part, too." |

| The thing is the Lakers not having Kobe is a huge blow to the team, but the Spurs not playing with one of their big three is completely normal and they play just as good (not in the playoffs of course). But I'm pretty excited to see us playing SAS. Sessions will step up big! mark my words. |

out of all the teams in the west the spurs scare me the least, i think they are more scared of us then we should be of them.
they have no one that can contain pau or bynum with or without kobe drew and pau should go for 20+ each. who's gonna stop them? bonner?splitter? 6'6 dajuan blair? i think this is a great opportunity to show them who's boss.
i dont mind that kobe is sitting out, we need him healthy for the playoffs. what im interested in seeing is if goudelock gets some run. i think his 3pt shooting can really help us in the playoff against the double teams that will come against bynum. maybe catch lightning in a bottle with one of our young guys if they can show something during these games kobe isn playing and ride that in to the postseason. we need some form of spark of the bench |

Hate to say it, but I feel the same way. If nothing else, they will try to wear down the Lakers with fresh legs and multiple subs. After losing to Utah, I'd bet the Spurs really want this one to try to stay in contention for the #1 seed. |

| I'm happy that he is getting a chance to rest. But The Lakers (& me) are going to miss him tonight against the western conference leading Spurs. |

| Lakers better win as many games as possible but without burning out the starters. Claim the 3rd seed. I do not want Lakers to face Memphis in the first round. The team must work harder while Kobe is healing. Especially Bynum and Gasol must show up on both ends. |

Kobe Bryant no longer wearing a walking boot
By Mike Bresnahan
San Antonio"
The Lakers have told Kobe Bryant to stop wearing a walking boot to see how his sore left shin reacts to being unrestrained.
Bryant will not play Wednesday night against San Antonio. The Lakers' next game is Friday against Denver at Staples Center.
He did not talk to reporters at Wednesday's shoot-around. He was wearing socks and flip-flops as he left AT&T Center.
Bryant will have missed three games because of tenosynovitis in the shin, a condition in which a tendon sheath becomes inflamed and causes pain whenever the tendon slides in or out of it.
With eight games to play, the Lakers (36-22) lead the Clippers by 1-1/2 games and Memphis by two games.
The Lakers are only 13-16 on the road and will have a tough time improving that mark against the Spurs, who are 40-15 overall, 23-4 at home.

| we'll smoke them. If Bynum is dominant we can win. These games against them are huge. We need to win to keep the third seed. They need to lose to be the 2nd seed so we don't have to face OKC in the 2nd round. We need to win 2 out of three, this being the least important, to make a statement about who's still the boss in the west. |

Kobe Bryant is the only freaking shooting guard getting minutes.Mike Brown see's Andrew Goudelock as a nobody from the lack of minutes he gives him.He is too small to play the shooting guard so it seems.I disagree i see him as a decent player.
Devin Ebanks is going to either be the new Trevor Ariza or the next player to fade out like D.J. Mbenga. The Lakers need to check on all options for back up shooting guard including that dude who used to play for the Blazers Brandon Roy.This is another big game i hate the Spurs with passion. |

brown has actually said that he doesnt want to play goudelock because hes too short. which is really stupid since he plays steve blake at the same time as sessions and blake is the same height as goudelock.
i would like for kobe to sit atleast one last game so that mike brown can hopefully give goudelock another shot. im sure bynum wouldnt get as doubled if he had goudelock out there along with sessions.
i just dont get Mike B sometimes |

| Kobe needs to rest the team will be fine. We just need Bynum to grab like 40 rebounds. But I know that's not going to happen. Lakers could still win this game. |

Kobe Bryant did some light shooting today but isn't expected to play tomorrow vs. San Antonio. It would be his 6th game missed (sore shin).

Kobe got some shots up today -- pain-free -- for 1st time since sitting out. Running and jumping next. But he won't play vs. Spurs tomorrow.
