I have spent the last 6 months studying and trying to understand the intricacies of the CBA (collective bargaining agreement). As we all know, the CBA is the governing body of the NBA regarding players, restrictions, salaries and the concept of trades. Many people still think that a 2M-salaried player can easily be traded for ones that earn 20M. This is not so. The CBA has several rules for trades that we all have to comply with in order for a trade to be "legally" approved.
The greater mis-conception that is circling around blogs is this: Just because the salaries match, and the restrictions are complied with, does not mean the trade can already happen. Both parties have to be in full agreement. Lets just say "it takes two to tango."
For a better understanding of these concepts/rules, pls see:

Thanks to RealGM and ESPN, they have provided trade engines for the regular fan's use. These are very much abused nowadays thus the sprouting of thousands of sites regarding what a team needs to do thru trades.
For your amusement and abuse, pls see:

Since we now have the tool to become GMs ourselves, it is best to understand each team's roster, the salary distribution and the remaining contract lives of each player in the payroll. I found out that hoopshype has done a very fine job in providing a picture for the data we need. Just click on the drop-down arrow on the upper right hand corner and you can switch views to the team of choice.

Trades just do not sprout up like weeds. You need to be on track with the happenings around the league regarding free agency and expressed team needs as well as implied team needs for the speculations to be more accurate. I use ESPN's depth charts to view the rotations and the positions as well as the statistics of every player I am interested to know about.

If you have already mastered these processes and bookmarked these sites for reference like I have, its best that you also learn a few things that might be helpful for being an insider. Here are a few recommended sites that you need to see:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nbadraft/draf ... ?year=2003
http://www.coachesclipboard.net/FlexOffense.html
http://www.nba.com/usabasketball/roster_070820.html
http://www.fiba.com/pages/eng/fe/07/fib ... uStan.html
http://ballhype.com/story/mapping_the_nba_4/
There it is, you are all set. You are now officially and unofficial GM of the greatest basketball franchise in the world - the Los Angeles Lakers.
Good Luck. |
