This off season has been slow for the Lakers. More is needed but few have been signed and drafted. A Jedi Master has been signed, so is a former lefty Fish, a cancer survivor and a Luke clone and an explosive yet unproven rookie. This all amounts to us being a tad better than mediocre. Mitch has said that they will target big names this summer. That is exactly what he did. He targeted. Not acquire, but just target. We had some big targets, KG, JO, Pau and RonRon, but all of them are misses to that bullseye.
After posting a 26-13 record last year, we were ravaged by injury thus enabling and forcing Kobe to carry mush of the load to hold the fort up. It wasn't enough. Kobe said a flurry of things that I will not talk about. The Lakers are definitely in a bind.
But I see it different. I can actually see us better than last year. At least a little bit better...
The exile of Smush immediately makes us better. I predict that Jordan will have a sophomore year like what Deron Williams had but a little more subtle. He has 1 year on his belt which will prove wonders for him to be the starting PG. Expect him to increase every stat in his name because he will get a chance to run the team the whole season.
Derek Fisher is more important than you notice. He is one of the few confidants that Kobe has and he will be an influence to every body in the locker room. DFish will provide the steady hand in tutoring Farmar and Javaris Crittenton.
Chris Mihm was playing great before he got injured. He was having a career year and was a good starter for us. With him being healthy, we have another serviceable big downlow. I can see him switching with Kwame on who the starter is depending on the opponent. Or we can have a frontline of Lamar, Kwame and him for a big lineup.
Andrew Bynum has made a great leap from his rookie season to his sophomore season. He has simply tapped a little bit of that potential that is mostly raw at this time. If he can harness what Kareem is teaching him, maybe he can scare a lot of bigs. I can't see him scoring in double figures because he won't start, but I see him a good compliment for Kwame and Chris Mihm.
Luke Walton will try to be his old self before his injury and try to be the all-around glue guy for our Lakers. He won't be asked to really score but instead to facilitate the Triangle into perfection. That new contract also gives new motivation.
Kwame Brown still has not received the recognition he expected after coming out of high school. He has heard it all, from butterfingers to Number 1 bust. But face it, when Chris Mihm wasn't around, he was our best interior defender. If he can improve on his defense and catching the damn ball, he may work out for us.
Lamar Odom had a hellish season last year. His infant son died, he got mugged and the myriad of injuries, are some of the things he experienced. But he still came to work everyday, trying to play for something that was lost in the start of the season. The Lakers chemistry was great and he was having an all star season before the injury. I think this is the year that Lamar will show people why he is one of the most versatile players in the league. He has to realize that he too must take the crucial shots to make the teams guard him as well, not Kobe alone in the clutch. he has to show Kobe that he too can shoulder that responsibility. If Kobe sees that, the Lakers can be as dangerous as anyone.
Kobe Bryant is the best offensive talent in the league. He has to learn to trust his teammates, even if they don't deliver. He has to play team ball like the start of last season. He has to show the world that he can be a leader rather than a complainer. Kobe, I know you can do it.
I know this is not much of a "dangerous team" on paper, but this is OUR team. We live or die with our team. We stick to them through out the end. Whatever happens. I know a lot of you, including me, have suggested a lot of trades to improve our team, but this is our team as of the moment. We have to help determine how we can be successful with THIS team.
Let us keep the faith fellow Laker fans. We have nobody else but OUR Lakers. Let us support them now and let us not give up on them in their time of need. |

| I agree randy, this is what we have. However unlikely it is we could show improvement with this roster. I think this will be a very interesting season. Do any of our po guys take a step forward? Does a young team show growth? Does another year of the triangle under our belt improve it's effectiveness? We have not seen the type of move that we want to see but I will still be watching and hoping. I am a fan. |

ew. those women are thick.
the barry bonds home runs thing isn't nearly as exciting as kobe's 50+ streak. with all this spare time, i'm going to have to pick up a hobby. or work overtime. or chat in a lakers forum.
btw, oh and yay i'm in the "vet" area. thanks admins and mods for that, except that there ain't much to talk about nowadays lol. hopefully it'll pick up. |
