My good friend JOHN THE BAPTIST asked me to put up the 2011 NFL thread and since I always honor my friends request, here it is!
By the way Baptist, it is terrific to have you back. I missed your unique and inimitable style, verve and opinions very much. Great to have you back.
Well, its only preseason and I never put too much stock in it, but hey, my team is the Steelers and since they will be going to their new record breaking 9th superbowl this year, I'll talk about last weeks game.
The Black and Gold made the self proclaimed Dream Team Black and Blue in the first half when both teams starters were in. The Eagles got a nice dose of our new star reciever Antonio Brown. Remember the name. Soon everyone will know it. We crushed them on both sides of the ball, getting up to 21-0 as we turned the Dream into a Nightmare.
Michael Vick was up to his usual tricks, throwing three pics. His problem has always been passing the ball with his amazing athleticism hiding that fatal shortcoming and garning fans who think he can win it all.
Despit the hype when he was in college, the hype when he went to Atlanta and the hype now, if there was stock on Vick, I would sell, not buy.
It's just not often that a passer who makes the mistakes he does can lead a team to a superbowl championship against the kind of opposition you meet in the playoffs. It can happen, VERY rarely, but man, not hardly ever.
So sorry, Eagle fans, I still stick with the opinion I had of him since I saw him do his thing at VA in college. Great athlete, but not a top passing QB...and slow agonizing losses in the playoffs for his teams till retirement day.
He might prove me wrong and he has plenty of time to do it, but hes gonna have to in order to win me over.
In the AFC this year I do like the Steelers team.
With Brown, some offensive linemen back who were hurt next year and a healthy Polomalu, and a good looking first round draft pick DE the Steelers could be better than last year, if the injury gods are kind. This will be important because they are thin in the offensive line and at CB, two very vital positions. Right now, the team in the AFC that I think will be our biggest problem will be NE. They always have our number on both sides of the ball and that regular season game between them will be HUGE. They made two huge signings with Haynesworth and Oco Cinco who I think will be revitalized with Brady and company.
In the NFC, I can't go against champion Greenbay. A great QB at the top of his game and seven or eight guys who were on injured reserve last year while the team was winning the superbowl. YIKES!! Thats enough to scare the crap out of you.
Eagles have a very strong D, but also a very strong hadicap with Mr. Interception, Missed Read, Bad Crucial Pass at the helm of their attack. I think that will be the killer for them in the playoffs.
The new team to watch: Detroit. They have been loading up with studs on both sides of the ball. If QB Stafford can stay healthy, a huge if, then I think they are going to take a playoff jump this year. What a divison. Greenbay, Detroit and Chicago. I think it will be the toughest in football.
So my very early predictions. Very very early, lol. NE or Pittsburgh vs GB in the big show. This of course is subject to change as we see what develops, lol.
Any other NFL fans want to chime in, go right ahead. The more the merrier. Give your opinions on the league, your favorite teams or pounce on what I just said. Whatever you wish.
Are you ready for some football?
Yep, damn straight I am. |

Yes, The Baptist has been reborn....
I too am ready for some football. Hoping my Raiders can improve upon an 8-8 season. Did not look too good last night, but I do not put much stock in preseason games. A few years ago, the Raiders went 4-0 in preseason, and then proceeded to go 2-14 in the regualr season. |

SPQR, call me a fanboy, but its just the preseason. I never liked that preseason champs title the media gave us, but to base our season and Michael Vick's talent on 1 game is ludicrous. Not to mention we're coming from a lockout where training facilities were banned for months, and have little time on the field together. You cant deny that the additions are great ones. Nnamdi, DRC, Babin, Jenkins, Ronnie Brown, Vince Young, Steve Smith, and Ryan Harris are great signings. Comparing them to the Miami Heat is crazy, because the Eagles are not a 3 man team.
The only area that truly concerns me, is the MLB position. Although Casey Matthews is talented in some areas, I never liked the pick because he's just getting juice because obviously Clay Matthews is his brother. I would much rather have the talented Jamar Chaney play the MIKE (where he showed promise), Foukou at SAM (where he flourished), and have some guys battle it out for WILL or bring in Kirk Morrison. |

3peat,
I would never call you fanboy, lol. I agree with you that it is insane to make predictions based on the preseason. I was just putting up an insane, early post, lol, and talking some smack for fun.
Your Eagles had a GREAT offseason. I was hoping like hell Pittsburgh would cut Aaron Smith and Hines Ward and even trade James Harrison if necessary in order to sign Asimuga, um, the Raiders corner, lol, you know. Whatever his name is. Ike Taylor is a top level CB but Mcfadden on the other side is not good and I would have gladly given up those player to shore up that other CB spot with a player that good.
In todays passing league you gotta have CBs. Oh well, it was a pipe dream. The Steelers don't do things that way so I wasn't really expecting it.
As to Vick, lol. I was kind of having fun by talking about his three pics in that game. But I base my real evaluation of him on his entire career, not that preseason game. I would not want him as the Steeler QB for ANYTHING. Already lived throught Mick Vick I, Kordell Stewart for seven LONG years and I don't ever want to relive that kind of suffering again. QBs are there to pass the ball. They have to read defenses correctly, make split second, CORRECT decisions and also have accuracy. I don't care how athletic they are, or how fast, or how good they can run, if they can't first and foremost pass a team to death, week after week, I don't want him on my team.
I have seen more than enough of Vick over the years to not buy into the hype. My opinion remains the same: a transcendant athlete but not a great QB nor a good, consistant passer. Until he proves me wrong, that opinion won't change.
I remember when he was at VA and a local sports reporter was saying Atlanta would be the lucky team to get him after that season when he was coming into the draft. My reaction was: "No, Atlanta will now have this incredible athlete who will never be a great QB and will suffer through a decade or more of losing to teams in the playoff with better QBS, just like the Steelers did with Kordell."
I have seen nothing yet to change my mind. I think Vick, like Kordell before him, is a death sentence for a team. He will make your jaw drop, he will garner praise and fans for his sublime athletic plays, and he will in the end, always come up short because he is not a great passing QB. In the end, I think the things he doesn't do-in the passing dept-kill his teams more than the great athletic moves he makes with his body and legs.
Anyway, 3peat, Philly is a very powerful team on both sides of the ball. They have coach in Reid I respect very, very much. They will be in it all the way and their fate will certainly be decided in the playoff and not before.
The Raiders? lol. The Raiders? Well, John, if you guys get a QB in next years draft, then things might start to happen. My advice, root for your team to lose every single game this year. Hard medicine, but sometimes it pays off. |

I kinda thought you were just poking some fun, but I was "not sure if serious...." lol.
I agree wholeheartedly on your statement of how in this league, you need CB depth. The Packers have two solid corners, and just added IMO, a very promising corner in Davon House. Im glad the Eagles followed with that, but at the same time, Id be lying if I said I wasn't intrigued to trade Asante for a LB. There was rumors that the 49ers were interested in a Willis for Asante swap. I doubt the rumors are true, or else Willis would be in an Eagle uniform, and Asante would not be an Eagle right now.
Anyway, Im just so thankful for us having another football season, because if we didnt, Id be so miserable when Im at home because we would of had 2 lockouts. Hopefully the CBA and the NBA can follow up on that as well and work out a deal. |

3Peat,
I like to talk smack here once in a while because as a Lakers fan, who can I do it to here, other Lakers fans? lol. We all root for the same team. But here I can poke some fun and go over the top when the mood strikes me. Its all in good fun, though.
Do you think it would be possible for the Eagles to traded one of your top three CBs to the Steelers? I hear you guys are weak at linebacker and we are loaded there. I think a trade like that would help both of us. Lets get this deal done!!!
I am with you on this lockout stuff. If the NBA does have a season I am turning my NBA brain completly off and will just concentrate on football. I just won't even think about the NBA at that point. And if they don't have a season, so be it. |

Lol Id gladly trade Samuel for one of your top 3 LBs. Makes sense for both sides. Sadly, I think we're going to stay put. I just hope they dont start Matthews. |

3peat,
Lets do the Silverback, James Harrison for Samuel. It would be a loss for us, but I would then move our killer young LB Lawrence Timmons to Silverbacks spot. Timmons is a beast inside but actually can be a brutal passrusher if he played OLB. He is fast as hell.
Then we would have two top flight CBs and you guys would have a killer LB who would dominate for you like nobody you have had in years. Sounds good for both teams and it is a rare trade when that happens. 3Peat, pick up the phone and lets do this deal now!!
Anyone who watched the Steelers beat on Atlanta this weekend saw the exact wr I was just talking about here, second year man Antonio Brown just tear Atlanta up! A 51 yard kick return, and a 44 yard and 70 yard TD catches. Thats three TD catches for the second year Steeler in the last two games. All of them the spectacular variety. This guy is lightening in a bottle.
With the emergence of Brown to go with another great speedster deep threat, young Mike Wallace who exploded on the league last year, the Steelers will have a quick strike, big play capablility like they have not had, perhaps ever. Can't wait to see these two guys just tear teams apart this year.
Sorry Atlanta fans, but we own you.
Saw Vegas odds on winning the superbowl this year. Some were expected, some surprised.
Green Bay the fav at 7-1. No surprise there. It is very, very hard to repeat in the NFL but with a whole bunch of guys who were on injured reserve last year while they won the championship, I would make them the favorites too.
New England next at 8-1. They did a great job getting Ocho and that great defensive Lineman from Washington, but I have lost some faith in this team. Every year they are the favorite to win the superbowl and every year they find a way to lose in the playoffs. I respect 'em, but I'm not sure about the superbowl anymore with this team.
Steelers next at 10-1. This team could be better than last years with a better, faster, more potent offense. So I can understand the respect given. They should be right in the hunt.
A surprise next, my friend Steve's Chargers, also at 10-1. They do have some good talent and a terrific QB in King Philip, but also have Norv Turner. A coach I don't respect at all. All I have seen this guy do is take talented teams and have them underperform. I would never back a team to win the superbowl that has Turner commanding the helm. We will see if he can prove me wrong.
A couple surprises not in the lead: The Jets and the Eagles. Perhaps fat boys (Ryan) constant guarantees of superbowl victories the last two years has finally worn thin with the bettors. I have doubts also about Sanchez. He has shown sparks, but also shown some really bad decisions too that have killed them. They didn't look ready to play last year in the AFC championship game last year against the Steelers and got killed in the first half. Makes me wonder about fat boy too. I agree with not making them a favorite, but people have been sucked in by Ryan before so I kind of figured they would be a favorite.
The Eagles are the self proclaimed Dream Team and they are VERY powerful with really good off season moves. Why aren't they among the top favs? Maybe after his bad pic against the Pack last year, people have doubts about Vick one again, when the pressure is on. He had a great season, but that pic sticks in ones mind and it follows his career path of not coming through in the big playoff game. He admitted after that game it was a bad throw, and of course, that has been his achilles heel his whole career.
If I were in the mood to throw a 20 or 50 dollar bill at a big underdog, I would do it on Detroit. They may be this years version of the Rams a few years ago when Warner led the Greatest Show On Turf to a great season and superbowl win. That team was loaded and came into its own that year and surprised everyone. I think Detroit may, just may, have a chance to replicate that run. They are loaded too on both sides of the ball. If Stafford can stay healthy and improve, they have the tools to go all the way. A great payoff at their current odds and a risk worth taking. |

Sports Illustrateds Peter King has made his predictions for the year. Last year he picked the Steelers over Greenbay in the superbowl. He got the teams right, just the result wrong, lol. But his track record of superbowl picks over the years has not been too hot.
Anyway, for some specific fans here of specific teams:
3Peat, he has your Eagles winning the division, beating Detroit 16-10 in the first round, then losing 23-17 to the Saints in the second.
Dan, King has your KC Cheifs dropping back to 8-8. Guess they were a one year wonder, lol.
John, you Raiders at 7-9. That may be about right. But I think 3-13 would be a better option for your future.
Steve, he has a great year pegged for you. San Diego winning the division, beating my Steelers 16-15 in the first second round (damn, we couldn't get one more field goal??!!!) then taking out the Ravens 22-16 in the AFC championship.
He has Atlanta beating the Chargers 24-20 in the Superbowl (sorry Steve, that dropped TD pass in the second quarter killed you).
His playoff teams are: Pittsburgh, Ravens, Colts, Jets, Pats and Chargers in the AFC. In the NFC the Falcons, Rams, Eagles, Lions, Packers and Saints.
As to his predictions? I don't go with either of them. The Chargers signing Bob Sanders was a GREAT move if he can stay healthy. A huge if. Thats why the Colts got rid of him, even though he is one of the top three safties in the game back when he was healthy. The Norv Turner curse is just too much for me to ever say the Chargers will win out in a playoff run. I think if they had a real head coach, they would be scary. But they have Turner, which instead is scary in a different way.
As for Atlanta. Nope. Not buying. Matt Ryan has shown flashes but has not shown me he can carry a team on his shoulders. He is young so maybe this year he will do so. Also, I just don't think they still have enough weapons on offense yet. Not when they will have to deal with the Pack, Philly, Detroit and the Saints.
So I'm not with King on either of his picks this year. But then, what do I know, especially in September? |

NFL 2011 starts off with a GREAT game. New Orleans vs Greenbay in a real monster fight. Should be interesting to see how Greenbay handles the notorious superbowl hangover against a very strong opponent.
Just heard Payton Manning is out for at least three months. That finishes Indy. They can say a requiem mass over there cuz that's all thats left of their season. That means a newbie will win that division and make the playoffs. Will it be always underachieving Houston that finally gets in in lieu of Indy?
The Fox sports NFL power rankings are out. Greenbay is number, as....Please log in to view the entire post.

Well, my beloved Steelers got their heads handed to them on platter Sunday by our bitter division rivals the Baltimore Ravens. I would give my thoughts on what I saw, but since the power at my house went out mid way through the first quarter, that is not possible. I guess given the ensuing events, that blown transformer did me a favor.
From what I saw on the news and read today, the game was akin to a bunch of Cambodian children wandering into one of Pol Pots expeditinary forces.
Coming into the game, the prevailing thought by many in the press, accepted also by me, was that Baltimore had slipped and were ripe for the taking by the Steelers. a banged up, make shift offensive line. The loss of stalwarts Todd Heap and Derrik Mason. It seemed to predicate a Steelers win. That was the "wise" thinking.
But there was a much older, more steady, historic and reliable reasoning that many, including myself simply chose to ignore. The Ravens are our most vicious, brutal rival. We had knocked them out of the playoffs in a year they thought they were going to the superbowl. They got to watch us beat the Jets the next week and go to that same superbowl. They got to sit around all summer long, thinking about us and also thinking about their opening game at home...against us. The results of this scenario are obvious. Yet for many, including myself, we discarded it in favor of another that was really just a pipe dream. For them, this was their superbowl. And they played like it. While we waddled up there like a team who thought the "new" lessor Ravens would simply give it up to us.
Well, if you looked at this way, one may suspect the Ravens would have something to say about the outcome of the game. And they did. Over and over again.
I was hoping that beating them in that first game, in their place, would be a quick knockout punch to win the division. Well, that is done with now. Now the Steelers will have to fight for the division and earn it long, hard way all season long.
As for my team, am I ready to hit the panic button. No. Of course not. It was one game in a long, long year. But it was a reality check. Nothing will come easy. As always, the season will be a hard fight with ups and downs and twists and turns. I will be interested to see how we look the next time we play a good team. Next week, we get Seattle and their horrendous QB Tavaris Jackson. So I do expect an easy time of it.
Now if we were to lose to that mess, then consider the panic button hit, lol. |

^Randy,
I think everyone will expect a much better showing from the Steelers next week. What was it? 7 turnovers? They'll be hard pressed to replicate that "feat" again any time soon, and like you said, this loss will serve as a loud wakeup call for a team that has Superbowl caliber talent.
On the Chargers front, our exciting comeback win yesterday afternoon now feels almost like a loss in hindsight. My team suffered potentially devastating setbacks as our Pro-Bowl kicker Nate Kaeding is seriously injured and out for the season, as is our formidable defensive end Luis Castillo. Furthermore, Sunday's hero of the day fullback Mike Tolbert, who scored all 3 Charger touchdowns against the Vikings, suffered an injury late in the game and his status remains questionable for next week at New England.
So as I reflect on this past weekend of NFL action and I look at the Chargers and Steelers, undoubtedly two of the top teams in the AFC, I can't help but feel a sense of irony at the outcome of those games. If the Steelers take this @ss-whupping by the Ravens as a serious wake up call and quickly come together to storm to the top of the AFC in the coming weeks, while at the same time the Chargers struggle to find wins as the losses of 2 (potentially 3) key players is deeply realized, then people will remember Week 1 and see where it all began. Sometimes when you win, you actually lose, and sometimes when you lose, you actually win in the end. |

Steve,
I agree and hope that as you say, the Steelers will rebound in a big way next week. Given the level of competition, they better or else something is very wrong.
A couple more notes on my team. It is a fact that over the last decade, 70 percent of the teams that lost the superbowl didn't even make the playoffs the next year. That is a rather large percentage and one must ask why? Some kind of carry over disappointment that all the hard work of the year before ended in failure? I don't have the answer. But its something for me to watch.
Also, if I were the GM of this team, I would have made some moves. I would have cut or traded the Silverback, James Harrison. He is 33 years old and suffers from a bad back. I would then have moved young, athtletic, speed demon Lawrence Timmons from MLB to his more natural outside LB spot taking Silverbacks place. I would have cut our great, stalwart DE Aaron Smith too. He is in his mid thirties and has had debilitating injuries the last two years. I would have used those two big salaries to sign that great cover corner from Oakland that Philly signed. Had they done that, he along with Ike Taylor and Palamalu would have consituted as a good a defensive backfield as there is in pro ball.
I also would have cut aging Hines Ward and started young speedster Brown at his spot.
I have noticed over the years that if you stand pat too long, keep aging stars around a bit to long, you pay a price. I think those moves would have made us a better team. But since the Steelers don't pay me millions to be their GM, even though they should, lol, all I can do is watch the team they have decided to go with.
Steve,
I feel you about your injuries. Troy was hurt all last year and it really hurt our pass coverage. Smith was out and Silverback was hurting too. So was our pro bowl center. Would those guys being healthy have made a difference against GB? I don't know, but it would have been nice to try.
I notice that many sports writers in the burg really harp on our injuries. Well, thats well and good, but all teams have them. Just like San Diego does now. It is interesting to note that GB won the SB last year with like 9 or more guys lost to injured reserve. So I would say to Pittsburgh writers, instead of harping on injuries as an excuse, perhaps they should harp on the fact that unlike GB, we didn't have the backups who could seal the deal. So I would blame our scouting department for having backups who can't cut the mustard. A problem GB certainly didn't have.
It will be interesting to see how your backkups perform, Steve. I hope all your guys come back to full strength over time because I am curious about what the Chargers can be this year. You certainly go into a very tough game with NE with that hurt squad. But I will say this, if you win that game even with the injuries, then you really are on a roll that may be special.
And yes, Steve, you are dead to rights when you say sometimes when you win, you lose. Injuries can determine a season in any sport, and very few teams pull of the victory over injuries like GB did last year.
I think the biggest surprise this week was our friend Dan's KC Chiefs being mauled by pathetic Buffalo. I didn't see that game so I can 't comment on it. But man, I mean Buff really, truly sucks. I wonder if KC was kind of resting on their laurels going into that game and thinking Buff would just roll over and play dead. |

Randy,
WOW! That's an astounding stat how 70% of teams that lost the Superbowl fail to make the playoffs in the following year. Man, it must be a case of teams doing as you say and resting on their laurels, rather than looking to improve the team. I guess too many GMs figure that a team which got so close to winning a Superbowl shouldn't be considerably altered before the next season for fear of totally ruining the chemistry that got them to the Superbowl in the first place. Still, considering all the aged veteran stars on the Steelers, I can certainly understand why you would have preferred to trade up for younger players.
As for the Chargers, "Full strength" will sadly remain out of reach because the severity of the injuries to Castillo and Kaeding will keep them out for the duration of the NFL season. However, there remains hope because despite losing our star Defensive end and Pro Bowl kicker, the Chargers roster remains as strong and talented as any roster in the league. It'll likely take a number of additional injuries before Charger fans start thinking about hitting the Panic Button.
Dan's Chiefs sure did take a pummeling at the hands of the lowly Bills. As you say, it was shocking but considering the fact that they're a division rival of my Chargers, I can't say I'm unhappy at the outcome. Any losses that the Raiders, Chiefs, and Broncos pile up is good stuff in my book |

Woohoo! The infamous NFL thread is back... even though I may not be able to say the same thing about my Chiefs! Sheeite what an embarrassment at Arrowhead in Week #1 at the hands of the Bills. That was torture. And I don't think I've ever seen such a mass exodus from the stadium long before the game was officially over.
^^ Oh thanks Steve! hehe... I see from the above that it's ON already! I better go back and read all the posts just to see how badly I'm already disparaged. lol
My only hope now is that the team is a work in progress even though they looked like a team that doesn't give a flip. Pretty devastating news about Eric Berry being out for the season with a torn ACL too. Great.... just great.
By the way, I consider the Steelers showing to be an aberration too, and the real team will show up sometime soon. One week does not a season make, but in the NFL there are not too many games to spare. |

| Hey, at least the Cowboys crumbled and once again snatched defeat out of the jaws of victory! They're very good at that. I don't remember specifically if there are any Cowboys lovers or haters on here, but I'm sure there are a few who didn't so much like seeing the Jets come up with a W. |

Dan,
Yes, the Cowboys folded again under in the crucible. But I was actually rooting for them, lol. We fight the Jets for home field. Jay Leno had a very funny, nasty remark about Romo. He said when a business has a bad fourth quarter of profits, it is called a Romo quarter because of the collapse, lol. Vicious but true. Romo has had many great games and moments, but one thing you can bet on with some far in his career, when the chips are on the line, hes gonna screw it up.
Also, don't know if you heard yet, Dan, but on ESPN late tonight, er, this morning, lol, they said your great second year safety Berry is out for the year!! OUCH!! That is a shame. Though I doubt Steve is shedding tears, lol. I have a feeling he will end up one of the all time greats and I really wanted to follow his second year progress.
Like Steve, you now have felt the injury bug. So have I. Our starting OT Willie Colon who just signed a big contract is also now out for the year. And as I said in an earlier post, offensive line and CB is the LAST place we can take injuries, lol.
All three of our teams??? After ONE freakin game!! C'mon!!!
Oh well, as I texted to Steve, our teams must endeavor to persevere no matter the obstacles. Lets see if they can. |

Randy: Uh huh. I thought that would be the case re: you cheering against the Jets. It's half the fun in the NFL to cheer against your typical rivals.
Yeah, I mentioned Berry's injury up above. I still remember you first mentioning what a great player you thought he might be prior to the 2010 draft. It looks like you were right. But injuries are such a huge part of sports as we all know. Sucks! I don't even wish injuries upon my most hated rival (guess which team dressed in silver and black that might be ). I wonder now if we'll see more injuries this season due to the shortened training and more intense pre-season. It could just be bad luck, but the overall trend will be interesting. The same will go for the NBA if they have a season. |

Dan,
Im right with you. I remember the playoff game against Cinci the year Ben got his first SB win. Carson Palmer went out with a horrific knee injury. I hated it. If I could wave a magic wand, no teams would have injuries in any sports. All would be decided strictly on merit.
Didn't catch your mention of Berry on the thread. Sorry about that. I just read this morning that he made the pro bowl last year as rookie already. I didn't know that. But it dont surprise me. He is the total package, physically and mentally. Hope he comes back at 100 percent. I really feel bad Dan, the guy is such a special player and they usually make a huge jump from year one to two. He would have been such fun to watch. Your teams gonna miss him but bad. |

Thanks Randy, and I don't wanna grovel, but I have this horrible feeling that the Chiefs are much thinner than they looked at any point last season. Well, come to think of it I guess they looked very thin in the playoffs too. lol. So maybe they were reborn last season to a degree, but now the so called "sophomore jinx" is likely to set in before they can truly get back to that higher plane. I'm not givin' up though dammit. I intend to dish it out on here this year right along with the rest of ya! |

| This weekend the Chiefs take on the Lions and that energized defensive line anchored by Ndamukong Suh, Kyle Vanden Bosch, Corey Williams and others. They're getting pretty fearsome up there. If they stay healthy at QB I can see the Lions being a pain in the a$$ to everyone all year. We'll see. They've changed their environment surrounding the team and they have a lot of talent, that's for sure. |

Dan,
Yes, the Lions are building a machine. If the QB Stafford keeps getting better and doesn't get hurt....again...the sky will be the limit for them. Maybe not this year, but very soon. GreenBay fans are gonna learn to HATE that team and man what games they will have against each other for that division in years to come.
You guys drew a very tough card this week. Unlike my Steelers who have pathetic Seattle, lol. Good luck there.
Best matchup of the week I think is Steve's Chargers against NE. I lucked out and will get that game sunday after the Steelers. I am really looking forward to that clash of offensive giants. GO CHARGERS!!!! |

So can I say that I expected the Chiefs to come a lil bit closer to the Lions than that 48-3 debacle? I'm disgusted to say the least. After two games the Chiefs have been outscored 89-10. Give me something to work with here guys... sheez. So far this team hasn't just declined, they've turned into a freakin' joke.
The Patriots appear to be badasses once again. Time will tell.
Good thing the Chiefs let Tony Gonzalez go huh? The guy's just lousy in his days as an old player. The guy looked great vs. the Eagles tonight. The Eagles looked awfully tough even though losing a game. I doubt very much the Falcons would have won if Vick hadn't gotten hurt. |

Dan,
Sorry about the loss of that magnitude. I was thinking of you when I saw the score. I will be honest as always, if things go south like this, may be time to root to lose as much as possible. I have never been a fan of Cassel and perhaps if you get a high draft pick, you could get someone who will be better. I know if I were a KC fan, I would start to think about losing more and getting a shot at a top QB. I did that with the Steelers before.
Detroit is building a machine up there and they and Green Bay are going to engage in some wars over the next few years, not only to win the division, but to get to the superbowl. It will be a great rivalry for ALL footballs fans to watch and follow.
Another nice thing, all those BOOORING thanksgiving day games with loser Detroit facing Dallas is now officially over!! Yaaaah! Now I want to see Detroit play on thanksgiving or any other time.
The Eagles game was great. I was thinking about our other compadre 3peat during that terrific fight. Perhaps his Eagles would have won if Vick had not gotten hurt. Kafka did a great job though, and if that WR had not dropped that fourth down pass in their last drive, they may yet have pulled it out. Atlanta is hard as hell to beat down there and the Eagles almost turned the trick.
The other biggie was our friend Steve's Chargers against NE. Too many turnovers for them and not enough pressure on Brady. If are not on Brady like a tick on a deer, he will eat you up. I know. I have seen him do it to my Steelers, lol. Even with all that, SD stayed in it almost to the end. Another really good game. Brady has so many weapons this year and man does he know how to use them like nobodies business. They are a team to watch this year and I suspect when we play them, once again, we won't get near him and they will kill us, lol. Hope I'm wrong on that.
My Steelers bounced back nicely. But hey, they played the aweful Seahawks. So they should have bounced back. I won't get a better read on them till two weeks from now when we play a good offense in Houston. Next sunday, we play the Manningless Colts. Another walkover game.
Even though we won 24-0. I still didn't like our offense. We should have put up 38 or more on them. That is what seperates the Steelers offense from those like NE or GB. We just can't throw up the points like those teams. And against those teams, you better be able to put up the points because if they are hot, your D won't stop them. Its a flaw of my team, but what can I do? That is how we are and I don't expect it to change.
Anyway, the Ravens, predicably, came down from their superbowl of last week against us, lol, were flat and lost to Tennesse. So presto, just like that, we are once again tied with them. So a good week all the way around for us.
My poor friend John's Raiders lost a freakin HEART BREAKER to Buffalo. They led that whole game until the end. Those are the worst kinds of losses and it was suprising in that Oaklands usually fairly sturdy defense gave up 38 points against a team that has an anemic offense. Well, John, a bad loss, now you gotta take out those Jets with that clown Sanchez who threw two more pics this week despite their win. If you lose that game, then against NE the week after, you may want to start the rooting to lose scenario too, lol, in an effort to get a QB with a high draft pick. I know I would. |

I can't talk too much trash to because my Boltz lost, but I that Chiefs loss was a whopper. LOL. What happened to that young, up and coming KC team from last year? 48 - 3??? Oh the humanity!
As Randy knows, I missed most of the Chargers/Patriots game because I was enjoying the local festivities with my kids, but I did catch the tail end of the 4th quarter and it certainly looked like Brady was carving up the Charger defense like Thanksgiving turkey. The turnovers didn't help either. Oh well, better defenses have fallen time and time again over the years to the likes of a legend like Brady, and very few teams can go up to New England and get a big win, especially in the Patriots season home opener, where they currently have an impressive streak going. As a Charger fan, the loss was not unexpected. On to next week... |

Great comments guys. My apologies but I think I'm basically gonna spend the week dazed and confused and shaking my head.
btw... I'm sure y'all caught that Jamaal Charles is out for the year to go along with Eric Berry. Freakish injury. It looked purely like a sideline mishap to me. Fuggin' A....
Oh the humanity!! lol... loved that one Steve |

Dan,
Yes, I read today about Charles injury. Man, when it rains it pours and your team is freakin soaked, lol.
I don't know what to say. What is happening with your injuries is brutality. |

I'd have to agree that Cassel is not a top-tier NFL QB. He could be something like in the lower third at best. Steve pointed that out last year while berating the Chiefs mercilessly and sadly I can't disagree. It's hard to be a stellar team w/o true QB talent, and especially when your running backs are injured. You can build a team around a running game to a degree but you gotta have some balance. |

^ It was another heartbreaking loss for the Chiefs. Cassel actually played a very good game up until that final play, where he threw the pick. I almost felt bad for the guy... ALMOST. The Chiefs showed some heart in that second half and they shockingly got 2 touchdowns out of Cassel, but if you can't beat my Chargers when Rivers throws 2 picks and no touchdowns, what hope is there?
I won't complain too loudly because I know how beat up the Chiefs are, but the Charger injuries continue to mount as well. At this rate, it seems like whatever team wins the AFC West will likely be the team that can still field a full team's worth of healthy players. lol. |

Sounds like the Chiefs showed up for a game at least. I didn't get to see it. CBS had a different game in the Austin area. I followed it via an online gamecast since I couldn't even find an online stream of the game. Oh well, a loss is a loss. Congrats Chargers. Any win is a good win.
Wow. Lions keep rolling, er roaring along. What will they be like after they get used to winning? Right now they're still very hungry. Definitely an interesting team. |

Steve,
It was a division win, which are all good, lol. But I understand the esthetic part of it. You want to look good when winning. It does mean something despite the false axiom that it doesn't matter. How a team wins does speak about its strengths and weaknessess. The Raiders surprised by beating the Jets. So you still have a team to deal with.
You know, the Jets are really having problems. One week its Sanchez, the next their supposedly great defense. Mcfadden tore them up this week for 170 yards. Like I said before, I am not sold on that team and fat boys proclimations of greatness and future superbowl glory. I am not a believer in Sanchez and that team just looks sloppy so often under Ryan's leadership.
My Steelers won against the Colts. I thought they looked terrible in doing so. The offensive line, once again, was just eaten alive by the Colts. LT Jonathan Scott got destroyed by Freeney and Mathis. To add insult to injury, in the last quarter he was knocked over, hurt and had to leave the game. Hate to sound vicious, but it did my heart good knowing his day was over.
The Steelers have had offensive line problems, huge ones, for years now. Plenty of time to address the issue. The only thing they have done here is drafted pro bowl center Pouncy last year. Other than that....NOTHING.
Instead, they have shoveled HUGE bucks into the defensive side of the ball. And while its nice to have a good D, the fact is, under the rules of the NFL, it is now an offensive league. You gotta put up the points to compete for the big prize. The days of winning with a great D are over because that was leglislated out of the NFL rules.
The Steelers determination to stack up the D and neglect the all important offensive line is coming home to roost.
Anyway, it is what it is and we will have to go on. Next week is offensively potent Houston down there. That will be a much stronger test for us, including our defense. If we play like we did last week, that will be a loss. But I guess on the bright side, Houston doesn't have a Dwight Freeney or Mathias at the defensive end positions.
Biggest surprise? No question Buffalo over NE. Brady was very nice to the Bills, throwing four pics that led to 24 pts. Brady threw 4 pics ALL OF LAST YEAR, lol.
So now, surprise, surprise, the Bills sit atop that division. Am I sold on them? Jumping on the bandwagon? Nope. Not yet.
They trailed at home 21-7 to NE before Brady started with his largesse. When you get four turnovers, especially then working against a defense as weak as NE's you should score plenty.
I want to see Buffalo beat a good team, sans turnovers, before I start to respect them as a serious team.
Philly lost at home to arch rival Giants. That was a big loss. Suddenly Phillly's dream team is in a nightmare at 1-2. More ominious, Mike Vick seems to get hurt almost every game. If he were a fighting dog, they would probably put him down with a concrete block smashed on his head.
With Vicks offensive line and penchant for holding the ball, he better take the hits better than he is now or Philly will be getting a very close look their backup QBs for a long stretch of the season and the playoffs will be just a distant land on the far horizon populated by other teams.
As Dan says, Detroit continues to roll. Cant wait to see them hook up with Greenbay. Their first meeting is on Thanksgiving day. I will be there for damn sure.
Its early in the year, but right now, based on what has transpired, I would say Green Bay is playing in a league of their own. I don't see a team that can compete with them......for the moment. We shall see if this stands true a month from now. |

^ Yeah Randy, the Raiders definitely have my full attention right now. They swept the division last season but still didn't make the playoffs, which is virtually unheard of. The Raiders have been a VERY physical football team over the last two years; and certainly more physical than any other team in the AFC West. I believe the Raiders host New England next week, and I may actually tune in to see that game. If the Raiders beat the Pats, then I may really start to worry. LOL. Of all the teams in the division, it seems clear that the Raiders pose the biggest threat to my Chargers. I just hope my team gets a bit healthier before we have to face them.
I missed the Steelers game, but from everything I've read, they looked less than sharp in the win over the Colts. I have to agree that the Steelers would look a whole lot scarier if they had a formidable offensive line. It continues to hurt Roethlisberger's career statistically because of the lack of pass protection he's almost always had. Fortunately, he's one of the rare few QB's who doesn't really need it in order to win football games, though it's not pretty much of the time.
I know it's a long season but I agree that Green Bay is looking like the strongest pick to return to the Superbowl. They're just a remarkably impressive football team from top to bottom. Like you, I very much look forward to seeing that Detroit VS Green Bay game. I hope both teams are still undefeated when they play eachother, which would only add to the excitement. |

Steve,
Yep, the Raiders host NE this coming week. That will be an interesting game. Unfortunatly for the Raiders, Brady usually doesn't have two bad games in a row. But for you, a good thing, lol. Oakland doesn't have much of on offense. If Mcfadden isn't doing it on the ground, then they aint doing it, because their QB is lower case, to be charitable. Then they are dead. So lets see if NE can stop their running attack. If they can, watch out, It could get ugly with a pissed off NE wanting to expunge last weeks meltdown.
Not sure why the Steelers have ignored our O line for years. Not only does it hurt Ben, but we cant run worth sh*t either. No holes. Does make things difficult. We drafted a right tackle this year from florida, Pouncys old roomate who he vouched for. Injuries have forced him to start. So I guess I can only hope he pans out as the year goes on, then we will have two good O lineman to go with the three bad ones, lol. Oh well.
It would be fantastic to see Detroit and GB both be undefeated coming into that game. Im sure Fox would like that too, lol. I like Detroit and root for them. I have a good friend who is a Detroti fan and also those fans suffered soooooo damn long under idiot GM Matt Millen who just destroyed that team. No coincidence they started turning around after he was fired. They deserve some good times. The Lions are the team I now root for in the NFC.
By the way, Steve, the fox power rankings top six are these this week:
Green Bay
Saints
Ravens
Steelers
Chargers
Lions
Not sure how they don't have Detroit no worse than three. Guess they are the parvenue who still carries doubt with the Detroit name. |

| I guess I need to chime in. I'm a realist and knew my Vikings wouldn't be good this season, but the way they've been losing has been mind-boggling. I never wanted the Vikes to go after Mcnabb, I wanted Ponder to take his lumps and grow as a QB, now I'm treated to seeing McNabb do nothing but check down throws all game and throw long balls to a receiver's shins. Our defense has been great in the first half of all three games, yet looks bad in second halves due to our offensive three and outs and coaches not adjusting to opposing teams adjustments. Not to mention on 3rd and 4th and 1 in the last game the coaches felt it was better to let Mcnabb throw and give the ball to Toby Gerhart over Adrian Peterson. Not surprisingly both plays failed miserably and our best player Peterson was a friction' decoy. Time to bench Mcnabb and root for my team to lose so they can get high draft picks. |

Hey Gem,
Nice to see you on the thread. I think you are viewing things realistically. With GB and Detroit, Minny is not going to be making the playoffs for some time. Now is the time you want to finish low and get as much talent in the draft as you can.
I agree with you about Ponder. You gotta start the guy and get some feel if he has anything special. What is the point of dragging out a dead horse like McNabb? What does it do for the team? My local paper has a Heisman watch every week. And of the top six guys so far in the race, five of them are QBs! This may be a great year to draft high and get one. Minny has to find out if Ponder is the real deal before next years draft so they can move accordingly.
As for not featuring Peterson? That is funny. Maybe the Vikes want that top pick, lol. |

Def-one-24-2
There are unsubstantiated rumors that he is Lebrons illegitimate half brother.
Well, a lot more of the NFL story took shape today. My Steelers looked ragged on offense and old on defense in losing to Houston down there. Nothing I didn't kind of expect. Ben got sacked five times and hit flush on eight other occasions, lol. After the game, it was revealed he now has cast boot on one leg, on crutches and will take an MRI today back in the Burgh. This was the inevitable result of what has been happening with our pass protection. An injury, even a serious one, will eventually happen when your QB becomes a pinata.
I have harbored the suspicion for a while now that because Ben makes so many great plays out of busted plays while scrambling for his life, winning a superbowl with a line two years ago they had no business winning, that the Steeler brass came to the conclusion that they could skimp on the O line and Ben could mask the deficencies. Well, that worked to a degree the last few years, but its coming home to roost now in a big way.
In todays NFL, its all about passing and you better, and I mean BETTER, be able to give that QB some time to throw. The Steelers now have all their money tied up in a defense that is aging and now have no offensive line to protect and facilitate the best player they have.
Since they were in the superbowl last year, one would be tempted to say, give it time. But I am nothing if not a realist. I just don't see this line getting appreciably better to a degree where they will be able to run or pass protect to beat the likes of Green Bay, New Orleans or New England, even if they make the playoffs. I am not even sure they could beat lesser playoff teams. So I am very close to the point of rooting for them to lose and miss the playoff if this can accoplish a few of my desires: First and foremost, finally fire our horrific offensive coordinator Bruce Arians who I have loathed for years. Second, force the Steelers to start to take the position of offensive line serious, both with high draft picks and more importantly, signing top flight free agents. That would mean cutting guys like Hines Ward, Aaron Smith and other aging vets to get money. I am all for that.
If Ben has a serious injury and is out for the year, or a long stretch, it will not bother me. I would hope it will finally wake some people in the Steelers front office up.
Next week comes the resurgent Tennessee Titans. It is kind of ironic that when verteran QB Matt Hasselback signed with them this year, it was because they have a line that excels at protecting the QB and their coach told him that protecting him would be job number one, lol. Boy, if only the Steelers felt the same about Ben.
If the O line plays like it has this year, with or without Ben, even at home, beating Tennesse will be a tall order. The Steelers have a VERY easy schedule the last six game, I am one fan who hopes this schedule does not allow them to slip into the playoffs as they are now, and make management think things with this team are ok. I would rather miss the playoffs and address the problems than be playoff fodder for better teams and think all is well.
The Jets once again showed why Rex Ryan is full of hot air with his superbowl boasting getting mauled like a helpless child against the Ravens. They have a mediocre, caretaker QB in Sanchez, and now even Ryans defense has imploded. If things keep going this way, I wonder how long it will take before the big apple turns on the big gas balloon who is at the helm. As I said before on this thread, Ryans teams impress me as sloppy and unprepared and looked that way again against the Ravens. Next week they get NE. Nice.
NE bounced back against the Raiders in a huge way, as I said on my last post they would. Brady took out his Buffalo frustrations on the Raiders, and also as predicted, since Mcfadden couldn't carry the Raiders, the hapless Jason Campbell sure as hell couldn't. He just doesn't have that kind of ability.
Also as predicted, the Bills fell to earth with thud, losing to Cinci and their rookie QB. A lot of people in the media jumped on the Bills bandwagon after they beat NE last week, totally ignoring the fact that they were behind 21-0 at home before Brady served them the comeback and win with his four pics. Buffalo may be improved, or they may totally collapse. All that remains to be seen.
Steves Chargers won again, putting ground between them and Oakland. Steve, I think this year you guys will take that division pretty easy. You have the best QB in the division and I think the best all around team. You just have to contend with Norv Turner and you should get it, lol.
The Detroit comeback against Dallas was spectacular. That team is showing it is not only good, but resiliant as hell. Them and division foe GB remain the only undefeateds and are lining up for a huge showdown on thanksgiving.
The Eagles continued their downward spiral losing to Frisco. The dream team is officially now a nightmare squad. They join the Jets and Steelers as the biggest busts of the new season, based on expectations coming into the season and last years performances.
GB looked again like they are in their own league...and thats because right now, they are. Thats just the fact of it. |

I was all ready to write about how the Lions came back down to earth and then they made that colossal comeback. Wow. What a fierce defense when they wanna be. Down go the Chowboys. Next...
Sorry Randy, but I bet you were wishing the Texans had drafted Reggie Bush instead of Mario Williams. So many ppl thought the Texans were idiots. Nobody is calling them dummies now. Super Mario is a beast!
Chiefs win! Finally! I wonder if I'll get to see any of their games this year. They won't be featured much, unless there is a dramatic turnaround. |

Dan,
Yes, the Lions are ferocious up front. The weakness they have on D is their secondary. If they don't get a good rush then they have a problem. They should effort to fix this weakness in the coming years if they can.
As for Bush and Williams, lol. Well, I bet New Orleans wishes they took Williams, especially knowing that the road to the superbowl in the NFC leads through Greenbay. As for me, well, I don't worry about who other teams take. I wish we had done more to get top shelf offensive tackles here in the last five years. The fault lies only with the Steelers front office, braintrust and drafting department. If the Steelers (or any team) drafts correctly, things like matchups will take care of themselves.
It is interesting to note that the Steelers, after the first round, can't really seem to draft top flight offensive linemen. I don't see any team with all number one picks on the O line. That means they find good ones in the second, third, fourth rounds..etc. The fact that we can't is an indictment of our scouting and personel department. We have drafted offensive linemen in the later rounds but none of them have been close to top calibure. In fact, they all pretty much have sucked, lol.
If you are unable to draft them, then you better spend some big free agent monies and sign some who play with other teams. We have not done that either. All we have done is throw money at the defense. It's good to have defense, but man, if you have a franchise QB in todays passing football league, you better get him some good protection so you can compete with all the scoring machines out there like NE, NO, SD, Detroit and Greenbay.
Dan, you gotta get that old Dish network or Direct TV so you can watch your beloved Chiefs, like I do to get the Lakers and my brother in Jersey does to get the Steelers. |

Great stuff, fellas. I really look forward to Randy's NFL weekend Wrap-Up. It's quality stuff!
I can't help but laugh at the poor, hapless Jets. Talk about failing to live up to the hype.
Latest word from the press is that Ben Roethlisberger's okay to play against Tenessee but Harrison is out and will need sugery. With Baltimore continuing to surge, the loss of Harrison seems like another significant blow to the injury plagued Steelers. Hey, at least Roethlisberger is not seriously injured, right? Though with his O-line, I'm not sure how long he'll be able to claim a clean bill of health.
The Chargers offense looked a bit more impressive against the Dolphins on Sunday. After a subpar performance from Rivers against the Chiefs, he rebounded with a big game against the Dolphins. That's what I've come to expect from Rivers. Like other top quality NFL QB's, Rivers follows up a bad performance with an excellent one. Brady did the same thing and had a solid game to put down the Raiders. Any lead the Chargers can build on the Raiders in the division is what I like to see.
After 4 weeks of football, I'm starting to believe the Chargers will indeed reclaim their rightful spot atop the AFC West, assuming we don't drop both division games to Oakland again this year. OUCH! There's still way too much football left to be played before I start talking "Superbowl" for my Chargers, but I'm happy to say that the league's best teams appear to hail from the NFC this year, so it would appear that the chances of my Chargers getting to the big dance looks more promising than in previous seasons. New England still looms as an ever present threat, though I'd love to get another crack at them with a healthier Chargers roster. The Bills, Titans, Texans, and Ravens look strong this year, and despite Randy's doubts and concerns, if the Steelers make the playoffs, they remain an extremely experienced and difficult team to beat in the post-season. Now if there was only some way I could have confidence in Norv Turner....
Dan,
You aren't watching the Chiefs games this year? How about the internet feeds. That's how I watch the Chargers because I don't really afford the luxury of paying all that money for the NFL TV package. It's easy enough to watch them online and the quality of the site I use is good enough. Send me a PM if you're interested in hearing more. Looks like geriatric McNabb and his Vikings were no match for the "mighty" Chiefs on Sunday. Congrats. In all honesty, after that pitiful loss in week 2, the Chiefs have responded with pride and played much better each of the last 2 weeks. They gave the Chargers a tough game in their eventual loss and then followed up with a win this week. It's good for Chiefs fans to see them giving effort despite all their injuries and struggles. |

Steve,
I heard our middle LB Lawrence Timmons will now move to Silverbacks spot. I have been wanted him to go outside for a few years now. He is very fast and athletic and I hope and think a natural pass rusher. Now I will find out. I just wish it had been at Lamar Woodleys expense, not Harrisons. We just signed Woodley to a HUGE freakin contract this year that I think was a mistake. He has been productive the past couple years but strikes me as too slow to give that kind of money to. This year he has done....absolutely nothing, lol.
The other interesting injury development is our RB Mendenhall is hurt and out. He is a top flight runner but is a dancer. He likes to bide his time, looking and picking for holes. Well, there are none so he aint doing much, lol. He will be replaced by bruiser Isaac Redman. Many in the Burg, including my brother want him to start anyway over Mendenhall. He is a back who just plows into the line instead of picking and dancing. It will be interesting to see how he does. At this point, it can't hurt so I am willing to see what he can do.
All will be told with these changes come Sunday, lol. We shall see.
It is good that Ben is still with us, for at least the time being. I guess, Steve, all I can hope is that our busted up, sad *ss offensive line actually can start to jell at sometime to save the year. Experience tells me this won't happen and we won't become a true contender for the championship. But hey, its all I got so I gotta go with that hope.
Yes, I have no sympathy for the Jets. I don't mind confidence, or even arrogance.....if you can back up the words you speak. But all Ryan has done is talk and in the end fail. All three years hes been their he has said he would in the superbowl. That sh*t gets old when you never do it. If he had won one, or if his team looked like a machine right now instead of a joke, I would respect him and his bragadocio. But he aint, its not and I don't. To me, he is so much hot air.
Steve, good advice to Dan. I didn't think of it. He can go that route and save the big money layout that I do to get the Lakers.
Thanks for the nice words about my NFL writing Steve. I like and follow the NFL as much as the NBA.
I used to belong to a Steelers site. I became a highly read member but eventually very controversial because I did not couch my opinions about players or the sacred owners of the team - the Rooneys. This was back when they were exceeding cheap and making tons of mistakes that I would talk about plenty. Eventually I got banned because I wouldn't toe a happy, pro Steelers line and protected no sacred cows on the field or the owners box. When you don't varnish your opinions about athletic idols that can sometimes cause emnity with other fans of those players or owners. You know how that works, right Steve? lol. |

Hey Steve & Randy, I usually look for a Justin.tv or other stream for the game. It's hit and miss though as to whether the feed will work or not. It gets tiresome chasing around for a good one. We have DirecTV, so it's weird how they're giving away the NFL package for new customers and ppl who move, but not for established customers who stay at the same address. Go figure.
ps - don't quote me on it, but I might have gotten a bit discouraged in the first couple of weeks and it might have diluted my will to search It does seem like they're coming alive just slightly though, so we'll see. Thanks for the encouragement on that Steve. That's too kind, even though I'm sure you wouldn't mind much if they went 0-16! lol
As you see from my avatar I'm a Cardinals baseball fan too. I've been deep into that recently as well. We actually took the fairly short drive (170 miles or so) over to Houston to watch the final game of the regular season vs. the Astros since there was so much on the line. And what a historic day of baseball it turned out to be. Just crazy! My apologies if no one else is into baseball. I understand, but for me it goes deep. -- Randy, no doubt you're in heavy Phillies territory. What a battle it shapes up to be on Phriday (that's Friday in Phillies language ). |

Dan,
Actually where I live, its all about the Pittsburgh Pirates as far as baseball, as putrid as they have been for two decades. There is no love for anything Philly here. I can also say I never found the three hours of scratch, spit and nothing happens of baseball appealing in anyway, lol. Not trying to bust on a sport you love, lol, just never did anything for me. I also hate hockey, even with the Penguins success over the years. For me, its like ice soccer. Just nothing going on there either. I love the NBA and NFL. Also other eclectic events like big tennis matches, the triple crown in horse racing and NEVER miss an Olympics, summer or winter. I used to love boxing more than any other sport and for me, nothing will ever equal a great match between two great fighters. But that sport is ruined. All the great boxing champions of today play football, baseball, basketball. Who wants to get into a sport that brutal when you can play other sports and still be a millionaire?
It sounds like you had a hell of good time going on that trip to the baseball game. And thats what sports is all about, right? Rooting for your team, sometimes seeing something very special that you will never forget. Im very glad you had that experience. I know you just had the best time doing it. And you don't have to apologize for a thing, Dan. We all have different tastes in sports, music, food, movies. Its what makes us different. If you want to talk baseball and your Cardinals, please go right ahead and do it with a passion. I see the Cards forced a game five. Thats great news, Dan. I hope your Cards win the whole thing. |

Def-one-24-2,
Yep, one of the seminal and great owners in NFL history. He literally changed NFL history. Can't say he aged well or that he didn't go from one of the best owners football to one of the worst, but in his prime he was something special winning three superbowls. He also was a big part of the American football league before it merged with the NFL. He helped to institute the modern high powered passing game that dominates football now. He also was a maverick who took on Pete Rozell with lawsuits...and won...in his effort to control his team and move it where he wanted. Just such a groundbreaking, influential, energetic, polarizing figure in sports.
RIP indeed. |

Well, my Steelers busted through with a nice home blowout of a so far good Tennessee team. The changes forced by injury seemed to work out very well, lol. Both DE Aarons Smiths and DT Casey Hamptons replacements showed much more brio and effectivness than the regulars. I think thats a pretty sure sign that age and wear and tear are eating away at both of them. I would not mind of they were platooned or benched in favor of the new guys the rest of the way.
Max Starks, our newly signed tackle we cut before training camp played very well. So did the rookie tackle on the other side. Starks is no all pro, lol, but the fact the O line improved so much with the addition of Starks, who missed all of camp and the year speaks volumes about how bad the original starter, Jonathan Scott is. Also shows the Steelers made a huge error in not saving money by cutting Aaron Smith instead of Starks if they wanted to save on salary and hurt the team the least amount possible. Ben had been sacked an amazing 18 times already coming into this game. Only one sack happend against Tennessee.
It was great to see Ben finally afforded the protection other teams seem to make sure their franchise QBs get and he responded in kind like a franchise QB with five TD passes. The running game, with Mendall sitting was also responsive with over 170 yards. Second year back Jonathan Dywer got 111 of those. I hope Mendenhall, who is very talented watched how hard Dywer and Redman hit the line and the holes in getting the yardage. With this iffy line, dancing has to be jettisoned for naked aggression.
How bad is our line? Our savior Starks was sitting at home all year, not one team signed him. But with us, he is a star of the lot except for center Pouncy. That says it all, lol.
I guess now I can only hope his return, with Pouncy and the rookie developing may somehow gell into a decent line as the season goes on. Its the only hope we have.
What does the win mean? Well, nothing much. It just means with the replacements playing better than the starters, and Ben finally having time to throw, we were able to blow out Tennessee at home. The next two games are against dregs Jacksonville and Arizona. If the Steelers really are on the rebound, then they should win both games. After that comes murderers row of New England then Baltimore. If we beat Jacksonville and AZ, then those two games will be the litmus test of where the Steelers really are and what I can hope from them.
John's Raiders won a big one for Al and stayed on the heels of Steve's Chargers. Steve's Chargers won again against Tim Tebow and his personal connections with god and is neck and neck with Baltimore, NE and the Bills for the best record in the AFC.
Dan's Chiefs got a nice win too. But his Cards lost out in baseball. I am really sorry about that Dan. I was hoping you would get a ring there. Maybe next year.
The Eagles continued their death spiral losing to Buffalo. Mike Vick threw four pics, once again showing why I said I would not want him as QB on my team. The guy just is not the consistant passer, week in and week out, year in and year out that you need at that position to hope to win the championship. Besides Vick, the Eagles have other problems as well. Not common with an Andy Reid team.
The Jets took it on the chin hard from New England. It's amazing how their once stalwart defense is just coming apart. They are not old or banged up. Just coming apart. A strange thing to watch and not such a great reflection on resident genious Rex Ryan. Now at 2-3 behind 4-1 New England and Buffalo, they are in danger of missing the playoffs entirely.
A couple of rookies to mention. Cam Newton of Carolina is putting together a very special rookie year. Though his team is not winning, he is not the problem. He is putting together a rookie year that is so far comparable to the three best rookie QBs in NFL history: Dan Marino, Ben Rothliesberger and Sam Bradford. Dan and Ben went onto pretty special careers after those rookie years. Bradford, in his second year, is now playing like a rookie and has taken a step back, something that didn't happen to Ben and Dan. This goes to show that the NFL is very good at figuring out your strengths and weaknessess the second time around. Bradford will have to work hard and make a counter move to what they are doing to him this year. If he is an elite QB, he will do so in time. For Cam, he is worthy of much attention this year....and next...to see how he develops.
The other rookie is a coach: John Harbaugh. When he turned Stanford from a total garbage team into a super power, with plenty of help from Oliver Luck, he became THE COACH for NFL teams to pursue. Frisco won the Harbaugh lottery and they are certainly reaping the benefits. A horrific team is now 4-1 coming off a pounding of Tampa Bay. Based on the miracles he worked at Stanford and now San Francisco, this guy may end up as a coaching legend if he is as adept and smart as he currently seems.
The only fly in the ointment for Frisco fans and Harbaugh is he is stuck with limited QB Alex Smith. He has really gotten Smith to play much better, but physically, this guy is limited in what he can do. You can get by in the regular season with that, if you have a good team, but in the playoffs, when the competition gets harder and you have to face dreadnaught QBs like Brees, Stafford, Rodgers, Brady, Rothliesberger, Rivers, Manning and their ilk, it really puts you in a hole. Then it becomes almost impossible to get through and win the title.
And if he keeps winning during the regular season, he will never draft high enough to get a shot at a QB who has the physical gifts of a real franchise player. Of course, if your scouting dept. is good enough, and if Harbaugh has a great eye for QB horseflesh, and is very lucky, he may draft a great one in the later rounds. After all, Montana and Brady were not even first round picks and they did alright, lol.
It will be interesting to watch how it plays out for NFL's new resident genious of Frisco and how the QB dilema effects him, his career and his pursuit of a ring.
Now, my top five rated teams for the moment:
1. Green Bay. Undefeated defending champs just waltzed through Atlanta, in Atlanta, playing at half speed. No explanations required for why they are first.
2. Detroit. Talented, resilient and besides GB, the only undefeated team. The best WR and defensive line in the game.
3. New Orleans. The champs of a couple years ago have lost only one game, the season opener up at Greenbay that was a tight struggle.
4. Baltimore. A tough call over New England. But they have a ton more defense and their offense is running very hot too. They also gave two physical teams, Steelers and Jets, just horrific beatdowns. Very impressive stuff.
5. New England. The great Brady leads an attack that is as good as any in football. What's new? The defense remains suspect. What's new there too?
One last thought. Looking at GreenBays schedule. If they can sweep Detroit, a HUGE if, and beat the Chargers in San Diego, again, no easy task, I think they will go undefeated. Only two undefeated teams in NFL history, the 72 dolphins who went 14-0 and won the superbowl and of course the Patriots of a few years ago who went 16-0 and lost the stunner to the Giants in the superbowl. If GreenBay turns the regular season trick, I think they will go onto win the whole thing and eclipse the old Dolphins as the greatest single season record team of all time. |

That's a pretty good top 5, Randy. I agree with it. I'd put the Chargers and Steelers in the top 10 right now, but certainly not the top 5. It'll be interesting to see which of the elite teams remain strong as the season surges ahead.
I'll be back home in Simi Valley, California the rest of this week and through the early part of next week for my birthday, so I wont' be around to comment on the football thread. It really sucks that there's a bye next week for the Chargers because I won't get to watch a game with my Dad, who is also a big Chargers fan. Oh well, it'll still be a great weekend. I'm turning the big 30, so sayonara to my twenties. I'm an old man now! LOL |

Steve,
I would actually have your Chargers right at number six. If you guys had beat NE I would have put them in the top five, in fact in the top three. As for my Steelers? Well, I guess talent wise they are in the top ten. But sure haven't played like it except for the demoliton of Tenn. I would put them somewhere there, not sure exactly where. They will have to show much more consistancy before I would throw them much higher than say eight or nine or ten. We shall see what the future brings.
Here is an early Happy Birthday wish to you! I am sure you and dad will have a nice time even without the Charger game. As for hitting 30? Well, all I can tell you is the 30's fly by very fast. One day you are 30 and the next day you wake up and are 40. No kidding. My advice to you is to stop aging right about now, lol. |
