Artest's value proved in absence
While calling highlights from the New York Jets' upset of the previously undefeated Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, an ESPN SportsCenter anchor suggested that the only sure thing to take away from Indy's loss was that Peyton Manning locked up the MVP trophy while on the sidelines because all of the Jets' dramatic comeback occurred with him out of the game.
In similar fashion, one could argue that the major discovery gleaned from the Lakers' 118-103 road loss to the Phoenix Suns on Monday was that if the jury was out on Ron Artest's addition to the team before this road trip, his value was firmly established in his absence.
The Lakers were lost on defense, allowing the Suns to shoot 11-for-26 from three-point territory after the first quarter as Phoenix turned a two-point lead after one period to as high as 22 before settling on the 15-point rout.
Artest was at home in Los Angeles, still experiencing dizziness from his fall on Friday according to Phil Jackson. The Lakers coach said he his "hopeful" that Artest will be available to play against the Golden State Warriors back in L.A. on Tuesday. If Jackson is doing the hoping, then the rest of the team should be doing the praying because if the defense looked that porous against the league's No. 1 offense in Phoenix, it's hard to imagine it looking much better against the league's No. 2 in Golden State without Artest back.
The Lakers won their two previous games against the Suns this season with Artest in the lineup by an average of 19.5 points per game.
Los Angeles held Phoenix to just 40.1 percent shooting in the first two meetings. The Suns shot 48.9 percent on Monday without Artest out there, right about back to the 50.1 percent they have shot against every other team they've played this year besides the Lakers.
The Lakers also continued their trend of getting blown out in losses. Through their first five losses, they lost by an average of 15 points. In their sixth loss Monday, they lost by 15 exactly.
"Defensively we just weren't there," Andrew Bynum said, "Sometimes we switched, sometimes not. Sometimes we'd load [to one side], sometimes not. It was just terrible."
"Ron is a guy who helps that 100 percent," Bynum said. "He is definitely a captain out there on the defense, he's always talking and stuff."
Not that when he's talking everybody can understand him. Jackson said that he left it up to Lakers trainer Gary Vitti to communicate with Artest while he is recovering in L.A. because "I usually need a translator when I speak to Ron over the phone," Jackson said.
It wasn't Artest's statistical output that was missed -- he only averaged 10 points and two rebounds in those two wins -- so much as his overall presence, both as a vocal leader on defense and a capable body that's going to give you 30 minutes in the rotation.
"It's a big adjustment [without Ron] because we're a team that thrives on chemistry," Kobe Bryant said after seeing his game-high 34 points go to waste.
"You take him out of the lineup now you're mixing lineups with guys who aren't familiar playing positions or playing with particular units -- It's a little different."
Bryant had plenty of time to watch one of those Lakers potpourri crews up close, spending the last 7:50 of the fourth quarter on the bench with the rout already on and Los Angeles closing out the game with various ragtag combinations of Sasha Vujacic, Lamar Odom, Josh Powell, D.J. Mbenga, Adam Morrison, Jordan Farmar and Shannon Brown.
The bench, like a nagging ingrown toenail on the Lakers' Adonis-like overall body of work, came up small once again. They were outscored 52-31 and frequently made mistakes on defense.
At shootaround earlier in the day, Bryant, knowing that his team was down a starter and in the midst of a four-games-in-five-days stretch that already featured two overtimes on Saturday and a final back-to-back against the two teams that play at the most frenetic pace in the league, welcomed the substitutions to shine.
"They'll get their call tonight," Bryant said. "This is their night to step up and make a big contribution."
It didn't happen.
The most memorable moment involving the bench occurred after Vujacic failed to make a proper rotation in the third quarter, leaving the lane wide open for Leandro Barbosa to glide in for a layup. Vujacic was disappointed in himself that he slapped his own face with both of his hands in frustration as he ran back up the court.
Morrison even foolishly tried to flip a behind-the-back pass to Mbenga in traffic when he was already just a few feet from the rim and open for a shot himself.
Outside of Bryant, it wasn't like the starters fared much better.
For the second time in three games since signing a monster contract extension, you hardly noticed Pau Gasol was on the court at all as he finished with just 13 points, five rebounds and four turnovers.
Bynum had nine points and six rebounds in the first quarter, but finished with just 14 and nine.
Derek Fisher shot 1-for-7 and picked up three fouls trying to stay in front of Steve Nash -- one of them a technical.
And Odom, who Jackson said is his only viable backup for Artest at small forward right now, only racked up nine points on 4-for-13 shooting when granted the start for the second straight game.
"I wasn't comfortable with my starters or my bench," Jackson said. "I didn't like either group."
In other words, it was kind of like a game of Jenga. Taking Artest out -- one player out of 13 -- caused the whole team to collapse.

Pacifists coming in to lay some more of their new-age moral relativism on us in Staples. They come in flying high, fresh from dumping crap on the parade of the Lepers, and they come in knowing that they will face the absolutely softest, no-defense, no pride, no offense, petty excuse-making crying tampon-users in the entire League, the totally overhyped defending champions, aka the Lakers! The Laker players are probably at this very moment taking a straw vote to find out if they should just forfeit the game since they have no hope of winning.
Bynumidget guarantees, however, that if he can play for the entire 48 minutes, that he just might be able to snag one rebound.
The Zombie Squad, as ever, is doubtless off somewhere trying to find an Opium Den in El Segundo just so that they will have an excuse tonight for their omnipresent suckage. They will be able to excuse themselves ahead of time for their usual stint of horrid kindergarten basketball, because they were too stoned!
Even poor Pau Gasol, has never been the same since the Big Fart, O'Neal, dumped him on his keester in the Swampdweller debacle, and one wonders if that is all that O'Neal did - is it possible he also did an instantaneous orchiectomy? Certainly, Gasol has been playing like an old lady since then.
Our fearless floor leader, Fisher, says "if I can shoot twenty lay-ups, maybe one will go in"! "This is a game in which we intend to set another League record, that is, to play an entire game without ever registering even one assist".
Artest, apparently still wandering in the "land of the dippy", is still asking everyone he meets, if they know his name and if they took the license number of the truck that hit him when (sic) he so mysteriously fell down the stairs.
Phil Jackson, with his usual equinamous non-chalance, offers "I hope we play better, but you know, boy oh boy, this Golden State team is just a steamroller and our poor girls are feelin' just a bit peaked".
Woe, woe, woe is us.
Our only hopes are Bynumidget, Hot Dog Hero, Brick Layer, and Larry Bird II.
Pacifists by 83, a new League record, against the most püssy Laker team seen in about five decades. |

Hopefully, we'll win this one...we've been lucky lately 'cause Boston is also losing...in fact, their last game lost was against the Warriors. So i hope this will be a good call for our players, to step up and finally play hard along 4 quarters.
I don´t know if Artest will be cleared to play this one, but we're missing him out there a lot. And Walton is M.I.A....we'll, time to be patient.

haha cuckoo, that post made me blow the dust from my key board.. I'm with you man, I think what it is that makes a lot of us Laker Fans irritated is that we all know what this team is capable of. There was a few games this season where the Lakers are beginning to show some testicular fortitude and it seems that everyone got free castrations for Christmas this year..It's amazing how uninspired this squad is when they're fearless leader is playing with an overextended knee, injured funny bone, and maybe 1 and 1/2 broken fingers..I mean if that doesn't inspire them, what will? Did they want Kobe to yell.. "THIS IS SPARTA!!" before games? lol.. I wanna see more Fire.. I wanna see hunger.. This last two losses just put a BIG target on their backs and they better realize this.. So for now, I won't panic, but this doesn't mean I won't get irritated if they have another Sub Par performance again tonight..
P.S. Is it just me or if you compare the Lakers offense to any other Team's offense, that there are more picks and movement in other teams offenses? Need for a new offensive "PHIL"osphy?? |

Krispie,
About the offense, it is just you. The fact of the matter is, no matter how you structure the offense, if your players can't hit their uncontested shots, then the offense doesn't work. Most of the players on this team couldn't piss in the ocean from a dinghy in mid South Pacific. |

STAPLES Center, Los Angeles, CA

Quote:
With two 15-point losses in their last three games, the Los Angeles Lakers could use an easy time to finish off a stretch of four games in five nights. A home game against Golden State would seem like an ideal matchup for the defending NBA champs to get back on track, but the Warriors suddenly don't look like pushovers.
Los Angeles looks to avoid back-to-back home losses for the first time since the end of the 2007-08 season Tuesday night when it faces a Golden State team seeking its third straight upset of a playoff contender.
Los Angeles (24-6) will take the court at Staples Center for the first time since its 11-game home winning streak was snapped, 102-87 to Cleveland on Christmas Day. The Lakers, who haven't lost two straight at home since a three-game slide March 23-28, 2008, have won six straight meetings with the Warriors overall, and 27 of the last 30 matchups between the teams in Los Angeles.
The Western Conference-leading Lakers return home from a 1-1 trip that easily could have been 0-2 if it weren't for Kobe Bryant's two clutch 3-pointers in the second overtime of Saturday's 112-103 victory in Sacramento.
Los Angeles shot 43.5 percent and trailed by as many as 22 points in the fourth quarter of a 118-103 loss at Phoenix on Monday. The Lakers needed six unanswered points in the final 1:12 to avoid their most lopsided loss of the season.
"I wasn't comfortable with my starters or my bench," said coach Phil Jackson, whose reserves were outscored 52-31 by the Suns' bench.
Making his second straight start for the injured Ron Artest, Lamar Odom had nine points and 13 rebounds. The Lakers, though, miss Artest's energy on both ends of the floor.
"It's a big adjustment because we're a team that thrives on chemistry," said Bryant, averaging 36.8 points in his last four games.
Artest could return Tuesday after suffering a concussion and injuring his left elbow in a fall at his home on Christmas night.
Artest had 19 points and six other Lakers scored in double figures in a 130-97 victory over the Warriors in Oakland on Nov. 28. That win stands as Los Angeles' highest scoring output of the season.
While the Lakers look to improve upon their 16-3 home mark, Golden State (9-21) will try to snap a five-game road losing streak.
The Warriors rallied from an 18-point first-quarter deficit at home Monday and beat Boston 103-99. Golden State, which defeated Phoenix on Saturday, hasn't won three in a row since April 1-5.
"It was a wonderful game for us," Warriors coach Don Nelson said. "Wins are hard to find anyway, especially against two quality teams in a row."
Monta Ellis looks to continue his red-hot shooting after going 15 of 26 against the Celtics and finishing with 37 points. The point guard is averaging 32.2 points and shooting 53.4 percent over his last six games.
Ellis, who will try to score 30 or more points in four straight games for the first time in his career, had 27 as the Warriors lost 114-106 on March 19 in their visit to the Lakers. He led Golden State with 18 points in last month's defeat to Los Angeles.
Andris Biedrins has missed the Warriors' last three games versus the Lakers due to injury. The center played Monday for the first time since Nov. 8 due to inflammation in his right groin, but failed to score. He had four rebounds.

| Well, I learned one thing last night; it'll be awhile before I make anymore Ohiolaker guarantees. However, I do think we win this bad boy tonight. Lakers by 13. |

I guess you're right.. I was probably just used to when they actually attack the basket.. But you're right, I do see a lot of open jumpers that just dinks the back of the rim.. and you would think having two almost three 7 footers that they'll get some offensive rebounds on those long bounces.. But, today, we'll see how they do, Vlade as their PF and Chris Hunter as their Center, our Towers better step up today..
P.S. I wish we kept that guy Gafney.. when he's on the floor, atleast you know he ready to work.. |

I noticed you put Artest in the starting lineup profiles. I'm not sure he's really set out to play tonight, but hoipefully he is. |

| This will be another tough back to back game for the Lakers. Since the Warriors are at an all time high because of their big win last night, they will think that they are the better team. Lets face it guys, the Lakers are not playing good with the exception of Kobe. They started the season with all those home cooking games and got spoiled. Now other team scouts can see where the Lakers have gotten weak and will attack those positions. I hope the Lakers will rebound, but I will be concerned about how the Lakers are playing. I was watching the game last night at Boulder Station in Las Vegas and there were a lot of people pissed at how the Lakers were playing. I left before the game even ended. I guess you can say I am a poor loser. I hate to see our team get beat that bad. |

| We are gonna get slaughtered. Monta Ellis is going to dunk on Bynum, knock him to the floor, stand over him, shout obscenities, then walk away with impeccable swagger. Kobe is going to suffer from another injury... broken ankles, when Stephen Curry shakes n bakes and sends Kobe's butt onto the hardwood and sinks a 3... nothing but net. |

Good first quarter from Bynum but jeeeez these first couple of minutes in the second were pathetic!
Can LO stop playing like he's 3 feet tall? How many times has he gotten blocked already? Swear, our "bigs" dont understand how to go up with power or play big at all... |

| Lakers just suck-a** right now. No defense whatsoever. Bunch of retards that never learn from their mistakes. |

| Without Artest this team's defense had gone from league best to league laughing stock. |

| We miss Kurt Rambis, our defensive coach. It seems these guys just forget how to play D. |

| These Lakers players have a collective mind of a slug. I can see that now what PJ meant when he said that. |

| The Lakers are throwing some stupid passes lately. That doesn't help when your outside shooting is worthless |

Like I said, this triple tower lineup, simply does not work. Yet, Phil insists on sticking with this lineup.
I said before the game that if Lamar starts at SF, this is a loss. So far, we've been playing like **** against Golden State, at home. I really hope Im wrong here and we come out with the win. |

| So far, the most embarrasing play of the Lakers was when Kobe was on his serious defensive stance, and in the same posession, 2 seconds later, Monta (the guy Kobe was guarding) feeds someone on a WIDE OPEN layup. |
