7:30 PM PT, November 17, 2009
STAPLES Center, Los Angeles, CA
Quote:
The lowest-scoring half in franchise history figured to provide enough motivation for the Los Angeles Lakers in their latest game. Instead, they suffered through yet another poor second half.
The Lakers look to bounce back Tuesday night and avoid their first three-game losing streak in nearly two years when they host the Detroit Pistons.
Los Angeles (7-3) didn't suffer a third loss until Dec. 9, in its 20th game, in 2008-09 on its way to the franchise's 15th NBA championship. The team reached that mark much more quickly this season.
Each of the defeats featured two common themes -- poor shooting and underwhelming second-half scoring. The Lakers shot 39.5 percent and had 35 points after halftime in falling 94-80 at home to Dallas on Oct. 30. They then won six in a row before shooting a season-low 35.2 percent and setting a franchise record with 23 second-half points in a 105-79 loss at Denver on Friday.
Los Angeles shot 33.3 percent and was limited to 37 points after halftime Sunday in a 101-91 defeat to Houston, which held a 60-38 rebounding edge.
"You only end up getting six offensive rebounds on the night when you shoot 38 percent," coach Phil Jackson said. "That's not supposed to be like that. You're supposed to have numbers of second opportunity chances. So we're going to have to work on where we're getting our shots from."
Kobe Bryant was 5 of 20 from the field and scored 18 points, two nights after finishing with 19 against Denver. Bryant, who aggravated a groin injury against the Rockets but is set to play Tuesday, hasn't been held under 20 in three straight games since April 2-7, 2005.
"I've felt better," Bryant said, adding he was "mortified" at the past two losses. "It'll be all right. I've been nursing it, kind of playing through it. ... You know I don't make excuses."
The Lakers have not lost three in a row since Jan. 23-27, 2008, shortly before Pau Gasol -- out with a strained right hamstring -- was acquired from Memphis.
"Defensively, we need to step it up," said center Andrew Bynum, averaging 20.8 points and 11.8 rebounds. "That's what we're lacking right now. We got guards trying to box out bigs. Bigs trying to box out guards. We're all over the place right now."
While Bryant tries to end his shooting slump -- he hit 32.4 percent over his last two games after making 56.9 percent in his previous four -- Detroit's Ben Gordon is coming off a far worse performance.
The Pistons led Dallas by six at halftime Sunday but lost 95-90 as Gordon missed 15 of 16 shots, the last a potential tying 3-pointer with two seconds left.
"I was getting great looks at the basket, but I could never get myself into any kind of rhythm," Gordon said. "I was getting open, and I can't start turning down shots, but nothing felt good and nothing looked good."
Gordon has been the primary option with Richard Hamilton (ankle) and Tayshaun Prince (back) out, and Rodney Stuckey left late in the fourth quarter Sunday with an ankle injury after scoring a season-high 28 points.
Stuckey said he is "good to go" Tuesday, and will try to improve upon his 5.0-point average against Los Angeles last season.
The teams split their two meetings in '08-'09, with Detroit handing the Lakers their first loss, 106-95 at Staples Center on Nov. 14.
Bryant averaged 25.4 points in his last five home games against the Pistons, who won three of those matchups.
http://espn.go.com/nba/preview?gameId=291117013
PROBABLE SLs:
Derek Fisher
Kobe Bryant
Ron Artest
Lamar Odom
Andrew Bynum
Rodney Stuckey
Ben Gordon
Jonas Jerebko
Charlie Villanueva
Ben Wallace
Must win game - PERIOD.
...Time for Lamar Odom to man the **** up and actually fill in for Gasol. |

| It would be shocking if the Lakers lost this game. Has any Phil Jackson team lost 3 consecutive games and still won an NBA championship? I don't think it's ever happened before. Still, I wouldn't put it past the Lakers to come out sloppy again. At least we can count on big contributions from Bynum since he'll have much smaller, slower defenders guarding him all night. He's quickly becoming my favorite Laker. |

LSD,
I've learned to have low expectations about the Lakers when they face inferior competition, that way it softens the blow if they do lose.
Geez, I'm starting to sound like Urkle.... |

Be very careful, Lakers. This is not going to be a gimme like you thought the Houston game was going to be. Detroit is another depleted team (just like Houston) with alot of pride and is looking to be another thorn in our side. This team is going to play small ball and look to crash the offensive glass just like Houston did. The Lakers better not have any excuses for being out-rebounded by this smaller team. If the Lakers don't come out with energy and actually sustain it for 48 minutes, they will leave Staples with an L. Also, keep in mind that we have lost 2 out of the last 3 home games to Detroit.
With all that being said, the Lakers win this game by 4. |

| I can't think of any conceivable reason for LA to lose this game so unless they play like crap then they should win. Hopefully they don't play like they did against Houston and Denver. |

Our team has that ego not to go more than two losses in a row. We've kept that for over two years now. We can't let it break today.
+ Rip Hamilton will not be playing tonight. |

| This is what we call a trap game... but since they lost two in a row.. they will treat it like they are playing boston or cleveland. So they will win. |

OK, where are all those Kobe haters tonight or should say not haters, but critics???????????? That is what I figured. The man missed his first four shots and then it seemed like the old Kobe where he could not miss for nothing. What a performance by a man suffering from a strained groin. Second option Bynum is having a bit of a problem with Wallace, and really he shouldn't he towers over Wallace. But as soon as Kobe started hitting his shots, it spread the defense. Shannon Brown should be the starting point guard. That man is so full of energy that he simply amazes me. I am glad that Phil finally benched Sasha and I hope they trade him.
Good game the first half, hope they can continue and win this game. |

| Nice first half by LA. Kobe is simply amazing, even with a strained groin he is single-handedly pushing the Lakers to a win. |

I agree except when you said that Bynum should be dominating Wallace. As Stu Lantz pointed out, Ben Wallace is a smart defender and so it becomes very hard to score against him. He wasn't a 4 time defensive player of the year for nothing. Just because someone is shorter than you doesnt mean the shorter player can't play defense. |

you have also never seen a coach with 10 rings he likes hes players to try and figure things out which helps them in pressure situations late in the year when games matter we as fans care but he really doesnt care to much about losses in november |

That has always been PJ's MO. He tries to let the players work it out for themselves. I agree though that he should have called for time a little earlier. |

| LOL, even Stu realizes that our bench isn't good enough to sustain a lead. But his excuse is that our bench gets thrown in without any momentum. Our bench pretty much needs to be babysat by the starters. |

First of all, as Yogi Berra said (if anyone even remembers who he is), it is time for "addition by subtraction." Release, trade or D-League Sasha. He is truly pathetic. How he fooled Mitch -- and most of us -- is beyond me. Sun Yue eats him for breakfast -- and would sell some Lakers jerseys in China! (China, last time I looked, has a lot more people than Slovenia.)
Then maybe add a shooter like Jerry Stackhouse. Even in our win last night, we shot 20% from beyond the arc. Good enough against Detroit; not good enough against Boston.
Start Shannon Brown instead of DFish. Bring DFish off the bench (after Pau's return) with LO -- now that is a veteran bench.
That is my suggestion to solidify both units. |

Good win to stop the "bleeding". Again, we had Kobe to lead the team, and he looked like the injury was less important than we thought, what it great.
17+12 is nice for Drew...i don´t think he's using Pau's injury to make a bigger impact in this team; it's just about there's a big man less to share the ball. All we know that this team (in fact, every PJax' teams) is an outside shooting one, and it always will be in that way.
Artest+Odom=15+15+12. I think this two guys will be happier when Pau will come back...even more than Kobe. The way Pau pass the ball will open the court much more to outside shots coming from Artest, and near of the rim baskets for Lamar.
With Walton sidelined for a month or so, our thin bench look even thinner...in fact, like a pointed before, it's just a matter of 3 guys: Brown, Mbenga & Powell. Sadly, when Pau will return, Powell will look again the games from the bench a lot, maybe too much. I think PJax is using him in a bad way, he would be a 10+5 guy in every other team in this League. But he would be a guy without rings, for sure. And it's clear that Brown, at this point of the season, has killed Vujacic's options to be even in the rotation. Sasha & Morrison are M.I.A. since now.
Somebody talked about DFish coming from the bench. I don´t know, PJax doesn´t love that kind of "big moves" in the rotation...plus, i bet he knows that the chemistry could be damaged. In his mind, 2nd unit is just to give some rest to the starters, or to fill voids for PF's or injuries. Don´t forget he didn´t make the Walton for Ariza's move last year...Walton did. I think he wants the energy from Brown coming from the bench, with more space to work; with Kobe and Artest out there, we have enough D (at least, over the paper) on the back court. So it's important to get Brown coming from the bench when one of this guys is having a little rest. Plus, he doesn´t have the leadership DFish shows on court...and yes, i'm not blind, DFish is looking old, shooting badly...but we've said nearly the same about him last year...and remember what happened at the Finals. You can ask Nelson about that. |

Good game by Jordy. Ive always liked the Farmar that gets to the cup and finishes athletically...
When Jordan and Shannon play at their best, we got a solid backup backcourt. I just hope they both keep it up (Especially Farmar) even when LO returns to the 2nd unit. |
