    Quote:
Each time he backed down Houston's Shane Battier(notes) in the post and then deftly spun around him for a layup Wednesday night, Bryant jogged up court staring into the same pocket of fans seated courtside across from the scorer's table.

The man who met his gaze knew exactly the message Bryant was trying to convey.

"He looked at me to confirm, 'I'm using what you taught me,'" Olajuwon said. "That was the greatest gift for me. It was wonderful."

Here's something to think about (courtesy of SLAM): After 14 successful years in the league, Kobe can — and still wants to — learn from The Dream, yet Andrew Bynum is done with Kareem Abdul Jabbar after only a couple of injury-plagued seasons.

File under reason number 6,947 why Kobe Bryant is a beast.

that quote from SLAM is so true...What Kobe did to the Rockets the other night, ima say it again, NO ONE on this planet could've done that except Michael Jordan. Kobe dominated the post. The fadeaways, the moves he was putting on Shane, it was spectacular. He ended the game 15/30 from the floor, but didn't get a open lay-up or dunk the entire game. No one in the league could do that. Thats why Mamba is still the best in the business, bar none.

i can't find a clip of that one move Kobe did on Battier from like 15 feet, where he turned left, then turned right and faded away banking the shot in. It was beautiful.

^ Its crazy thinking how Battier could play his best defense, and Kobe could still go off 35+ points, shooting 50% or close.

Here are Kobe's highlights in that game. I think its the one at 0:40

I'd do anything to have Battier on this team. Then again, who wouldnt? The ultimate role player, contending teams would kill to have. DO IT MITCH! Wink

If Young Centers Won't Listen, Kobe Will

    Quote:
Yes, that's Kobe Bryant(notes), working last summer on his post game with arguably the most agile, inventive center of all time. We expect to see legendary big men tutoring their fledgling heirs, because it's a secret club, a select society and a dark, dark art. Somehow being a point guard isn't, but whatever.

Hakeem was helping Josh Smith(notes) out a few summers back, but even that couldn't help Smith's power game; Patrick Ewing worked with Yao and now Dwight Howard(notes). Andrew Bynum(notes), he's doing the slow break-up thing with Kareem after three seasons.

But Kobe, 14 years and 4 rings into a Hall of Fame career—not to mention a 6'6" guard—is willing to sit at the feet of a master and let it sink in. And then put it to good use. From The Press Enterprise:

Bryant showcased some of what he learned in front of Olajuwon on Wednesday night, shaking off the effects of a lingering cold to score 41 points on 15-for-30 shooting in an overtime victory against the Rockets. Olajuwon was especially pleased to see Bryant take a perimeter defensive ace such as Battier into the post and comfortably turn and score around him with either shoulder, one of the skills they worked on together. […]

"He wanted to work on his post moves, and he wanted me to work with him," Olajuwon said. "That's a great compliment because I know I added value to his game. Now to see him using it, that's a great thing for me."

If this is the way Bryant copes with aging, who know what's next. He could play another eight years, especially after that week of Stockton Sessions. Jordan went fadeaway, but Kobe, he'll end up a point power forward by the time he's 36.

    Harry,

Kobe truly is the Michael Jordan of the modern era in basketball. If Kobe continues to abuse players in the post like this for the rest of his career, I think we can officially say that he has matched MJ's skill level in every way. It's uncertain and likely doubtful that Kobe will ever Match MJ's legacy as far as individual accomplishments but when you only compare the skill level of both players, Kobe is just like Mike.

The Lakers were an overwhelming favorite heading into Wednesday's game. The Rockets, however, surprised and confused the defending champs by playing aggressively and not backing down to anything. Not even with significant height disadvantages at every position.

Yet in the end, it came down to Kobe Bryant simply being better than everyone else. And he may have had an additional edge that none of the currently healthy Rockets had...

"What is that?" you may ask. Well... it pains me to say, but we might have to lay a bit of blame on the namesake himself. Yes, Hakeem Olajuwon spent part of the summer tutoring Kobe on sophisticated post moves and footwork. Things which Kobe used to shred the Rockets' 4th Q defense on Wednesday.

It makes me happy that Kobe would seek out Hakeem's help.

But it makes me sad that these trade secrets would be used against Hakeem's hometown team.

Oh, I can't stay mad at you, Hakeem! You rule.
