OKLAHOMA CITY — Thunder coach Scott Brooks was impressed by his young team’s effort in the overtime loss to the Lakers, but he was also impressed by the Lakers.
“They turned up the heat,” Brooks said. “They are a physical team. They don’t get enough credit for being a physical ballclub, but they are physical at a lot of positions. Derek (Fisher) is strong and as tough as a point guard gets. And (Ron) Artest, (Andrew) Bynum, Kobe (Bryant) and even Lamar (Odom) … they turned it up and really put a lot of pressure on us.”
Bryant had some missteps along the way but finished with 31 points, six rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block in 45:41 of play on a day when he wasn’t feeling well. He had two nifty answers in overtime to create scores based on the way Thabo Sefolosha was denying Bryant’s jumper so well.
“Obviously we all know what Kobe is about,” Brooks said. “He makes great plays, winning basketball plays, constantly.”

The Lakers are clearly a more physical team than they were in 2008. Bynum is banging down low, Artest has been a physical beast, and we all know how tough Kobe and Fisher are.
Lamar seems to have learned his lesson from the 2008 finals, and since then, he has proved on numerous occasions that he will NOT be intimidated. One incident that comes to mind is when Lamar and KG got in each other's faces during the game at Boston last season. If you recall, Lamar didn't back down.
Gasol added some muscle and toughness during the off-season last year, which showed in spades throughout the playoffs, particularly against Dwight Howard in the finals.
Should the Lakers actually lose in a series against Boston or anyone else, it won't be for a lack of toughness and physicality. If anyone is going to beat the Lakers, they are going to have to do it straight up because bully tactics, as displayed by the Celtics in 2008, will no longer work against this Laker team. |

Lakeshowsd,
I agree with your assesment. Losing that title to Boston imparted some lessons to this team. Much like when the Showtime team lost it's first title matchup with the Celts. Like that 80's team, they learned and it showed last year.
The Lakers won't be beaten by a more physical team or because they feel intimidated. If they lose, it will be because they just ran into a better squad. The only team out there that I would say has a chance to be that better squad is Boston. If neither team has any injuries this year, I have a very strong feeling that it will indeed be LA-Boston part II. Boston is impressive and has most certainly caught my attention in the early going.
It will be interesting to see if they can keep it up, and if they do, can we match them step for step? With home court in the finals so very important, especially against that team, there is a certain importance to staying with them for that regular season best record. I know it is very early in the year to think on that, but home court throughout the playoffs is established and won just as much in November as it is in May. |
