Where are the Lakers with salary now? Don't you think Kobe's staying with his existing deal was to give them enough wiggle room to land Artest? the team is on the verge of the beginnings of another dynasty. I think they know that and can taste it. So can I and it tastes sweet indeed. They should have better motivation next year. Artest won't let them become complacent. He's gonna come in and say let's run the table guys. Plus with the rotation they would have now of bigs if Odom signs on, would be able to keep them on fresh legs as the year goes by. Odom and Kobe are both good friends off court with Artest, that bodes very well for chemistry. 3 buds playing together. Looks good on paper in our vivid imaginations. So what do they do now? Sign Odom ok. Maybe Ariza will come around and sign on again. Anything is possible if he doesn't like his other options. If he did that would be unbelievable. If he doesn't, we have Odom as the 6th man (if he signs to play with his pals), Brown next and then what? Ok Powell and Mbenga but we still need a cple of seats filled. Of course I'm excluding Sasha and Farmar. Would they work out better in this system? Rotate them in as perimeter shooters? Not ask them to do anything else? Or ship 'em out and get Kidd |

So it goes in the business that is the NBA.
I loved Ariza but the realist in me knows what's up.
The same 6M/yr for Trev or for Ron? Please. Not even a question. Ron is motivated for a ring and he is a substantial defensive upgrade at the 3 thank to his superior weight and strength. And, at a career 2.1spg, I do believe he has demonstrated an ability to get the timely steal just like Trevor.
Next up, bringing back LO. He completes me. |

IT'S ABOUT TIME WE GOT RON! IT'S THE BEST PLAYER THAT THE LAKERS COULD EVER GET THIS COMING SEASON! HE'LL FIT LIKE A GLOVE WITH LAMAR AND KOBE AND THE REST OF THE TEAM. WHOOOOOOOPEPPPEEEPPEPEEEEEEEEEEE!
Ron will infuse some hard nose defense with the Lakers.
Let's now see about Garnett talking all that smack when they play the Lakers. |

| Just saw the interview on ESPN with Ron Artest. He said is not all about the money. He said I want to be a Laker. Thast what we need. A guy that wants to be here and is gonna bleed purple and gold. I loved Ariza but I welcome Ron Ron with open arms. There was no way in hell that we could of stand around and watched Artest sign with the Cavs. This made my night. YEAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now we need to sign Odom, Brown. We ship Farmar, Sasha and Morrison and get a good quality Point guard. Just Imagine Nate coming to the Lakers. WoW... Ok Im dreaming. HaHa!! Good job Mitch. Go Lakersssss!!!!!!!!! |

I was just watching Sports Center, and Marc Stein was talking about Jason Kidd being offered a three year deal by the Knicks and the Mavs. And then, he said it's the same one the Lakers offered Artest, and I had to think about that for a second. After I realized what he said, I ran to my computer and found this here.
I'm so excited if this is true.
Talk about toughness. It doesn't get any tougher than Artest, physically that is. |

Hey I just thought of something.... Now that we have Artest could that possibly mean that WE WON'T BLOW ANYMORE LEADS WHEN KOBE GOES OUT OF THE GAME??
LOL!!
Finally we have another consistent perimeter scorer!
This is great on so many levels:
- We add that toughness we've been seeking
- We add a guy who is arguably the BEST perimeter defender in the NBA
- We add a guy who will be able to give Kobe some much needed rest during the season
- If, God forbid, Kobe ever went down with an injury, we finally have a guy who can pick up the slack. That was always a HUGE fear of mine these past few seasons. Who did the Lakers expect to pick up the scoring load from the perimeter if that happened....SASHA? ARIZA? WALTON? LOL!!!- This is a resounding answer to the Spurs picking up Richard Jefferson and the Magic getting Vince Carter!
- Who are the Laker opponents supposed to double team now? Ron Ron is going to be WIDE OPEN all season!!!!!!!!!
I'm friggen giddy man! Can't wait till next season now!!!! (Evil laugh)
P.S. My vote for Artest's number in LA -----> 99! Just like Manny! |

| Well, here we go... hopefully this thing works out. I'm not really negative about this as much as just cautiously optimistic. I still think he's mentally weak (despite his supposed physical toughness)and can blow up anytime. It probably won't be a Rodman-going-to-the-Bulls type of relationship, in that Phil won't be able to put much leash on him (and his aspiring music career). It is important that Kobe happens to be one of the few people Ron seems to totally respect. I hope between Phil and Kobe putting him in check, he'll help us repeat. It'll be interesting for sure! |

My view of Ariza is changing a bit. I thought he was mature and had it together but now seems a bit of a baby. I mean he gets the SAME MONEY in Houston the Lakers offered him, which btw is almost double more per year than last year. But leaves LA for Houston coz he wanted more or didn't feel wanted? C'mon. Seems like maybe he has stars in his eyes and thinks he'll be a big stud in Houston. Makes me think his year's surprising performance was just about the contract. Have to wait and see how he does with the Rockets. I wish him well, but for the same money...it's Artest hands down! A guy who averages 18 ppg vs a guy who during the season averaged 9. A guy who is a long term proven defensive stopper vs a guy who had 1 decent year so far. Is there supposed to be a question here? We could have had both if Ariza hadn't gotten greedy. I liked him but, ah well...
Source: Rockets agree on multiyear deal with Ariza
Posted Jul 2 2009 11:17PM
HOUSTON (AP) -- The Houston Rockets have reached a multiyear deal with free agent Trevor Ariza, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Thursday night.
The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because NBA rules prohibit announcing free-agent deals until next week, said the Rockets offered Ariza the full mid-level exception for the first year, about $5.6 million.
Ariza is coming to Houston just as Ron Artest decided to leave and play for the Los Angeles Lakers. Ariza is likely to take Artest's spot in the Rockets' starting lineup.
The 6-foot-8 Ariza averaged 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists for the Lakers last season, which ended with the NBA championship.
The 24-year-old Ariza earned $3.1 million last season and he boosted his value during the playoffs, when he averaged 11.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists.
Ariza was acquired by the Lakers in a trade from Orlando in November 2007. He just completed his fifth NBA season after being drafted by the New York Knicks with the 43rd overall pick in 2004.
Ariza said after the Lakers' championship run that he was hoping to stay there. But his agent, David Lee, told KRIV-TV in Houston that Ariza got the impression that the Lakers didn't want him anymore.
"It was never about the money," Lee said. "It was about being at a place where he felt wanted and appreciated."
Rockets general manager Daryl Morey did not immediately return a phone message on Thursday night.
He flew to Las Vegas on Thursday to meet with Ariza, a sign that he was already expecting Artest to leave.
The Rockets will need Ariza's versatility and perimeter shooting early next season, because they know they'll be missing Tracy McGrady for the bulk of next season. The seven-time All-Star is recovering from microfracture surgery on his left knee and could be out until February.
The Rockets are also awaiting a definitive prognosis on Yao, who sustained a hairline fracture in his left foot in the playoffs. Morey made an aggressive pitch to free agent center Marcin Gortat shortly after the free agency period began on Wednesday. |

I agree with you... I'm pretty sad Ariza didn't take LA's offer (which was pretty much the same as Houston's offer)... I mean, seriously, similar contract... I pretty much expected for Ariza to choose the team that he just won a ring with! But nothing much we can do... good luck to Ariza though!
I do wonder how he "didn't feel wanted" in the Lakers... |

Let's look in perspective
- Lakers at the start of free agent season knows that Artest probably can be signed for the MLE. Other than Houston, which has quite a bit of issues with Yao and Tracy both injury prone, not many other people are going to risk more than MLE for Ron.
- Comparing position/skill, Lakers viewed that it would be pointless for them to pay more than MLE for Ariza. In fact, dollar for dollar one would compare MLE 5.6mil for Artest versus maybe 4.5~5mil for Ariza. That would be fair deal.
- David lee obviously didn't think that would be the case. He felt Ariza deserves more.
- But here we have obviously a supporting cast of a good team, atheletic. But he is not going to have any star drawing power. i.e. teams are not going to pay too much more to pry him. Remember even Rodman had quite a fair bit of cultish followers!
Everyone has their own stance. And I see that Lakers came out of this better ahead.
Is lakers wrong ? I don't know. Morally it might appear not too nice. But they have always said they will see how Ariza fit into the system and they have never wanted to blow up their scale just to sign Ariza. The market this year is very much different from last year's. |

| You know, it's nice to have somebody who can make a statement such as that he wants to be a laker so bad he'd play for free. Now that boys, is a REAL man. A real basketball player who is starving for a ring. I just hope that his mental lapses and lack of mental toughness doesn't make a ring hard to obtain. I know he'll bring his game.. But I'm hesitant. He has a bad shot selection... Of course, hopefully he doesn't jack up those same shots since he will be alongside Kobe. I don't know, I really don't. I'm optimistic, but I'm not necessarily happy. No secret I wanted Ariza more.. We'll just have to see once the season starts. Kobe and Phil better keep Artest in line! |

Let remember the reason why he jacked up those shots because he tried to be the # 1 Option for the Rockets since Yao was hurt in game 3 and T-Mac wasn't there I trust Artest will be under control. |

That's a very chivalrous statement he made there, but you honestly think if push came to shove, he'd actually do it??? Men say a lot of things lol...real men sit on their butts all day watching sports, drinking beer, eating chips, going to nudey bars and ordering their women around to clean house and cook. |

Well ya gotta understand one thing Sammi, on most of the teams Artest has been on, he was called upon to be "the first option" on offense most of the time. Thus, he had to shoot a lot. And I agree, not all of those shots were good choices.
But now he is on a team where he will thrive as a second or third option, which will allow him to spot up more and get to his sweet spots on the floor. All the pressure is off of him now, which will help his mental focus as well.
Plus he has known Lamar and Kobe since he was in high school and there simply is not a better team in the entire league for Artest to fit in with than the Lakers. He will be playing with his buds!
I truly believe that with the Lakers, we are going to see his game reach an entirely new level. |

How can we be stopped? I'm a realistic fan. But you look at what we have, at the age we are at...I see at least two more rings coming are way. I know MJ is getting scared now! And before you MJ defenders come up here to defend him, rings are what matter my friends. And Kobe isn't going to play softball for a couple years any time soon.

| My Laker season tickets have now doubled! Thank you Ron Artest. Playing with Kobe will allow Ron Artest to look a heck of a lot better with Alley oops, screen and rolls, open threes, and plenty of steals. Now Artest can rest assured that Kobe, Gasol, and Odom got his back. This feels good boys. I'm saving my seat inside the Coliseum for the Championship parade again. |

!
We just got absolutely SCARY! I can't wait for next season!
Funny thing is we still haven't mentioned other "small" key players like Andrew Bynum and Gasol. lol
Teams are going to get the BIZNESS next year!! |

I'm with you! Unfortunately, we "real men" are a dying breed by now. A couple of years ago, I even had to learn a new word for the "new breed" of (sic) men. Sensitive. Wow, I can't believe we STOLE Artest from Houston. David Lee can go jump off a cliff! I've got nothing for love but Ariza and I know this was his agent speaking not him, but Lee must be hiding in a hole somewhere now that Ariza signed for the MLE in Houston...who are pretty much a lottery team now with Yao and McGrady gone.
Man, resign Odom please Mitch.
Welcome to LA RON ARTEST!!! I'm not sleeping tonight lol.!!! Can anyone say REPEAT?! |

Not to worry, there are still real men in my generation that scoff at talking about "feelings" and other saucy little weenie subjects of that kind. We don't whine and complain, we just take care of business. We don't make excuses, we just take the blame. We don't shop at Metro Park or wax our bodies, or go to "hair stylists". There are still a few of us out there that are considered to be savages and raw, lol I will not let us go extinct! |

I don't share in the excitement. Winning teams are far more than talent but rather team chemistry. Artest and Phil will clash in a big way. I know kobe loves Ron Ron and Lamar knows him from their school days, but I have my concerns.
I'm struggling seeing ARPEST in a Laker Jersey. I'll have a hard team cheering for him... They guy was fined for not feeding his animals. He's a crass brute. Maybe Mbenga will tear him to shreds to welcome him to LA.
So who starts? Lamar or Ron Ron? What's LO's salary this year gonna be? Must be more than Luke and Sasha so even with a reduction he must be at least at $8M. |

| This makes either Josh or Luke are expendable.... I assume Josh but we gotta lower the cap! Luke and/or Sasha for a young PG like D.J. Augustin, Devon Harris or the assist monster Ramon Sessions? I hear Orlando wants to move Alston and the Celtics are considering moving Rondo? |

I realize I'm a bit outa control on this one, but the MLE for Trevor? So why did he leave a new dynasty, his hometown where he and his wife just had a baby and the place where he has various business investments in nightclubs? His agent's greed? David Lee better have a great plastic surgeon.....Trevor is gonna remove his head if he finds him! |

LOL! not real basketball players well of course he wouldn't actually play for free, but it was just nice that he understands championship > money.
And about Artest having to be the number one option, I understand that guys, my worry is that he won't like adjusting to be the 3rd/4th option on offense. |

Nah. I could be wrong, but I think they will be happy to share the offense. Knowing what they have the potential for here. They will try to leave egos at the door and get rolling. Plus Phil has a lot of front court rotation options and can keep everyone playing, yet not over exerted or burned out by playoffs. Should keep injuries to a minimum. It will be a juggling act but I think he's up to it. The main thing is Odom goes back to being the 6th man. But he will get good minutes subbing for Artest/Gasol/Bynum, or anyone up front really. He'll move around. Fish will have to take it a bit easier this year so his back up will get good minutes. So that takes care of 7 guys. Luke will get a bit of time, but really everyone else will see limited minutes, but maybe lots of 4th quarter junk time if the Lakers dominate. The main 7 will eat most of them up. But that's how it is. I don't expect any probs.
LA doesn't run set offenses usually, as how the triangle works. We have 5 guys now who can make their own shot. And Drew will be the anchor. He won't need to put up big points and can develop at a normal pace without so much pressure. Will be mostly needed for putbacks, rebounds and D.
Kobe is good for 3 more years now. Artest is down for 3 year. Odom will probably sign for 3 and Drew is signed for 3 more (?). So really this is a 3 year team, and with a little tweaking (PG) could absolutely win 3 in a row. Phil will probably stay 2 more years now that he's got this team. Who wouldn't? He doesn't want to hand the keys over when his successor could inherit a team that could get 75 wins and outdo Phil's Bulls record of 72. He want's to cement his records for a year or 2 so no one can ever pass him.
IMO

I guarantee that Artest and Kobe will openly fight this year. Artest will defy a Kobe command and start his streetball thing, Odom will jump up to assure Artest keeps his arms at his side, Artest will be suspended for three games by the Lakers, he'll apologize and say that he's still working on his youthful issues and a few months later it will happen again. With age he has redirected his testosterone by the very qualities that appeal to the fans are the same qualities that guarantee that this dog will bote the owner on occasion., He's a pitbull which reminds me that he was fined for not feeding his animals a few years back... Not being negative here, but I'd bet money on it!
Most Laker fans do not realize how much control Kobe wields. They see Lamar as slacking off, but I have always noticed that he excels when Kobe is not on the floor. Kobe holds the ball just too long causing doubt in his opponents what he's going to do next. This affects his teammates the same way and asserts his control over the pace and flow of the game. BY taking the game to his pace, he then scores nearly at will! That is the control tactic that Artest will challenge. It's my speculation that Artest and Lamar coming off the bench might be ideal! Start Luke to inspire the formalities to start the game and bring in the guns a few moments later... |

I'll bet money that doesn't happen. If it didn't happen in Houston, why would it happen here? I don't see problems, simply because this is where he always wanted to be. He wants that championship. He said it himself. He sees Kobe winning a ring, he saw Wade win a ring, his good friend LO win one. So I have a hard time believing he will start his streetball thing here, when he knows that will screw things up. BTW, what streetball? Never seen this guy play streetball in a game. I have never heard of any problems on the court for this guy. Off the court yeah, but that has dialed down a lot. He had no problems on the court last year in Houston, no problems off the court last year in Houston. So why are you betting money that it will start now, when he is playing with Kobe and being coached by Phil. The one thing Kobe loves is when a guy gives it his all every night, every play. And that is what Artest does night in night out. So not sure why there would be problems. |
