Hi Laker fans,my name is Mike and I am a Laker fan living in New York. I am a new member here. I was thinking about the Shaq trade and how we got absolutely fleeced by Miami and Pat Riley. All these trade rumors made me think back to when we traded Shaq one of the most dominate big men in history for Lamor Odom,Brian Grant, and Caron Butler. That was a horrible trade for us and it became worse when we traded Butler for Brown. Phil takes a hit for thinking so little of Butler. So when all was said and done after we cut Grant and traded Butler,we traded Shaq for Brown and Odom. Then we had to sit back and watch Miami win the title 2 years later and we could not get out of the first round. We got fleeced in that deal. And I really see how bad a trade it was when I look at what teams are turning down for players like Jermaine Oneal and KG,who by the way have not been the player Shaq has been, and have not won anything or even been to a championship.
It looks like the Wolves turned down the offer for Bynum,Odom, and the 19th pick for KG. The Wolves are asking for a lot more for Kg then we got for Shaq. And let me say it again Shaq went on to win a title in Miami. So the Wolves wont take Bynum,Odom, and the 19th for KG but we took Odom and Butler who turned into Brown for Shaq..think about it...Riley made us look really bad in that trade. And the Pacers are also asking for more for Jermaine Oneal then we got for Shaq. They want Odom,Bynum, and our 19th pick. And since the KG trade probably wont happen we might have to make the Pacer trade, what else can we do really..besides nothing or little trades?? We will be forced to give into what the Pacers want.
Going back to the Shaq trade,we would have been better off asking for one star instead of three players. Odom has never been an all star,Brown cant get out of his own way and Butler turned into an all star AFTER he left LA. Odom seems to watch Kobe more then play with him. Mitch should have asked for one star straight up for Shaq like Wade,Amare,or Dirk. I wonder if he even asked for Wade straight up in the talks with Miami. If Miami,Dallas,or the Suns etc etc wanted Shaq then a star had to be given up for him!!!!!!! Instead we got no stars. Now we are still looking for that star years later to go along with Kobe. And I wonder if we kept Butler would that be enough to push us over the top in the KG talks?? Say Butler,Odom, and Bynum for KG. Maybe the Wolves would still not go for it but it sounds a lot more tempting with Butler in the mix.
Going back to Shaq yet again,Kobe and Buss are to blame for Shaq being traded. Buss wanted to go back to showtime with a more up and down game. Problem with that though is he does not have Magic,Worthy,Cooper,Scott,Kareem etc etc. Buss did not like watching the Lakers lose to Detroit in 5 games a few years ago. He forgot the fact that the Lakers were in the finals that year and they beat the Spurs to get there. Detroit was a really good team that year. Its not like we lost to this years Cavs team. Buss forgot it takes a big man to win in this league unless your Air Michael J. And Buss also sided with Kobe over Shaq,Kobe was younger and Buss knew one had to go because they did not get along.
This is where Kobe is also to blame. He wanted Shaq off the team, they never got along, and Kobe was a free agent. Do you think if Kobe wanted shaq on the team he would not have said something? Look at him now demanding things,if he wanted shaq on the team the lakers would have kept both of them and added players around them which is what they should have done. And dont think for a second if the Lakers kept Shaq that Kobe would not have signed with the Clippers. Kobe cut his nose off to spite his face. Did you see D wade talking about who's team it was his or Shaq's as they held up the championship last year? Did you see Duncan and Parker arguing over who's team it is? Kobe gets blame along with Buss for Shaq being traded. Mitch gets the blame for the actual trade itself. It seems Kobe wants to be coach,gm,owner etc etc. He wanted Shaw to be the coach,he wanted Coach K also. When Rambis was coach Kobe never listened to him. Rambis during a time out talking to Kobe- "Do whatever you want" Kobe had it so good playing off of and with Shaq but his monster ego destroyed it,now Kobe,Buss, and Mitch have painted this team into a corner.
And I am not even getting into Phil Jackson who said years ago in his book that he cant reach Kobe and the kid is not coachable. Phil always was on Shaq's side yet when he came back Shaq was gone and the un-coachable Kobe was still there. Buss wanted showtime and all he has been watching the last few years is the triangle without Shaq and mediocre time. Now Kobe is saying he wants the Lakers to make moves or else. All the teams in the league know we are desperate, they hold all the cards over us. We either give into high demands or do nothing which leads to more Kobe problems.
And Kobe has totally forgot about the fact that the Lakers stood by him during his Colorado troubles and they traded Shaq because of him (Kobe will deny this and say it was all Buss but they both get the blame) and that the Lakers gave him one of the biggest contracts in basketball history.
When I look at the Lakers team I dont see that many players that other teams want especially for a star back. They wont be fleeced like we were in the Shaq deal,if anything they will do the fleecing. I never thought we could get KG with what we had to offer. The only move I can see happening is Bynum,Odom, and the 19th pick for Jermaine Oneal. The Pacers hold the cards here,I know the Lakers have said its too much but in the end they will have no choice. With Kg off the table who else could we trade for that would really help this team?? I have not heard much from Memphis on Gasol so I guess they will be keeping him. What else is out there?? We will be forced to do the Pacer deal.
And we would still need more help. Mitch,Kobe, and Phil would have to twist the arm of Buss to convince him to go after Artest. Other then getting Jermaine Oneal and Artest the Lakers are really up against it. Its not easy in this league to get out of the middle of the pack. Look how many years Boston has been bad, look at us the years befor Shaq. Thats why the Shaq trade and that whole mess started this whole domino reaction. We went from being in the finals 4 out of 5 years to mediocre and desperate for a trade now.
I say if KG is off the table we can only do one of two things, make either a trade for Jermaine Oneal or Gasol if he is available for Bynum and Odom and take a big chance on Artest for the 19th pick and filler. That gives us Jermaine or Gasol,Kobe,Artest,Farmar or Head if we get him for Cook and I guess Walton if we re-sign him. That's probably the BEST we can hope for. Its a better team then last years team but it does not come without risks. Artest can melt down at ANY moment,a few years ago he wanted to work on his rap record rather then play ball. And Jermaine has been hurt in the past. Plus you risk Bynum becoming a big star. But what else can we do besides nothing or just little trades which does not help the Kobe situation.
If Kg is off the table and Gasol not available make the Jermaine Oneal trade and have Kobe and Phil talk to Buss about Artest. Now the Pacers know they have us in a corner so they will probably want the 19th pick also which we would have to probably give them. That means no pick used for Artest. Could we do a sign and trade Walton for Artest? And if we make the Jermaine trade and we cant get artest we still need another player...who would that be? Its not easy getting big name players and stars. And when all is said and done the Pacers might get a better offer for Oneal from another team and Artest might want to just play in Miami. If we dont get Jermaine and Artest or Kg or Gasol the dominos just will keep falling against us. As a Lakers fan I am excited with all the trade talks to improve the team but worried also that we might get shut out completely from all the big names. Thanks for reading my first topic. |
