I really don't think Phoenix is seriously in this. I've been doing a lot of reading and watching way too much SportsCenter and here is why:
Chad Ford and Andy Katz are reporting that Phoenix just had Jeff Green, Noah, Brandan Wrightm and Conley in for a workout today. They both said that the only way they make this happen is if they could convince the players agents that they already have a deal in place to get into the Top 10. If that is the case, they would likely be giving up Marion and there picks in order to move up. So what would they have left to get Garnett?
Now the only problem with this is that the deal might be with Atlanta for the 3 or 11. I, however, can't imagine this is the case. If they were getting the 3 you'd think they would have also brought in Hortford and if they were only getting the 11 they probably wouldn't have a shot at any of those players. ESPN has been suggesting that the deal is probably with Charlotte. If that is true, then we are probably the only team left (outside of Boston) with a legitimate shot at Garnett. If Phoenix was simply trying to acquire picks to send to Minnesota why would they be working out players today? If they were to trade into the top 10 and keep the pick what would they have left? Unless they were willing to part with Stoudamire (which they say they are not), absolutely nothing. This also all makes sense when you take into account everything we've heard this summer about them trying to trim payroll. Young cheap players help them do that, Garnett does not.
As for Atlanta, if they are not trading with Phoenix I think there is a good chance Billy King would trade with us. People have been saying for a while that he'd like to pick up a veteran to go with Joe Johnson and Josh Smith by using his picks and since Odom, unlike Marion or O'Neal can't opt out next year, he'd be getting one for at least two years. Plus I think its safe to say King isn't the smartest GM in the world. I know everyone other than me hats Kupchak (I just feel bad for him, and think if he actually had authority--he doesn't--he'd do just fine) but I'd take Kupchak over King any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Now this is all of course just me thinking out load but I think it makes some sense. I have no ideal if we can talk Atlanta into making a deal with us to get Garnett or if we can pull it off alone, but I don't think we really need to worry about Phoenix since they appear to be heading in another direction.
Here is excerpt from Chad Ford today on ESPN that discusses Phoenix trading up:
• The Suns and Celtics' big workout of top prospects actually began on Monday when the team flew to L.A. to work out Yi Jianlian. Steve Kerr, David Griffin, Danny Ainge and Doc Rivers were there to put Yi through another workout.
On Tuesday the team execs are back in Phoenix to see Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer, Brandan Wright and Jeff Green.
There is still a lot of speculation on what draft pick the Suns are targeting in a trade. Everyone has a theory. Some say it has to be the Celtics' No. 5 pick -- something that that both teams deny. Others point to the Bobcats, who are shopping their picks.
Others say the Hawks, though there is some disagreement about whether GM Billy Knight's hands are tied from making a major deal until the ownership situation is resolved (see more on that below).
The Hawks do have cap room (around $5 million) and some expiring contracts next year (Tyronn Lue and Lorenzen Wright) to make a deal work for Shawn Marion -- but they could get a better deal with the No. 3 pick (see more on that below).
Here's one interesting scenario posed by an NBA executive. This is pure speculation on the part of the executive, but it does make some sense. The Suns send Shawn Marion to the Bucks for the draft rights to No. 6, Charlie Villanueva and Earl Boykins. The deal saves a ton of money for the Suns because the Bucks can go roughly $10 million under the cap on July 1 to absorb the salary.
However, a source in Milwaukee says the Bucks haven't had any meaningful discussions with the Suns.
• The Hawks brought in Al Horford and Mike Conley on Monday. From what I can gather, they are still leaning strongly toward Horford at No. 3. |

I just read Dallas is going for KG as well, they have the trades for minny. I don't think mitchie kupkakes will come through again..........this guy needs to quit, or get fired ASAP.
What are you blaming this on Mitch for. He's throwing the book at KG. It's those other stupid teams that aren't coming thru on their end
