I say about 2/3 of the Lakerworld are eager to see #93 in Purple and Gold. Each one of them believes that if Phil was able to handle Rodman, Phil can handle Artest. What he brings to the floor is not in question. Tru Warrior is indeed a shackle defensively. But what about the off-court issues? He has had the most troublesome NBA career in recent memory, perhaps next only to Rodman.
The issue is clear: Sacramento is shopping a trade for him and perhaps only LA is one of the most interested. The 26 other teams are in think tank mode while Detroit, Indiana and Sacramento are sure they are not interested. In return, Sacramento will surely ask for young talent and perhaps unloading one ugly contract over another in order to move on. Mike Bibby could be traded away too in order to pave the way for upcoming leader Kevin Martin. But whatever happens, the scenario likely lands Artest away from Bibby. If not, what is the point in breaking it up?
My take is : WE WAIT. We wait till there are no other options for Sacto but to trade him here. It is not like we are the ones in need although Artest brings a lot of defensive toughness that definitely missing in our roster. The next move, we offer a little less. We do not go all out as if JO or KG was on the move. We simply make a qualifying fair offer on the table and if it works, you may have gotten him cheap. There is no point to overpay him too.
If I were Mitch, here is what I will do. Ink a deal with Indiana for JO. If that deal goes through, evaluate your roster. The deal will likely take out Odom and Bynum and perhaps, Kwame or the #19. I personally prefer it if we can save Kwame for a Camby deal. Perhaps Kwame and the #19 will be enough. As for the Indy deal, we take it as Odom, Bynum, Cook and #40.
If these deals work for us, assuming we really want Artest here and JO is OK with it, I propose this deal:
Ron Artest + Shareef Abdur-Rahim
--for--
Luke Walton + Vlade Radmanovic + Sasha Vujacic.
I like Rahim from the class of '96 with Kobe, JO, Rahim. Perhaps Kerry Kittles can join in too, as will Derek Fisher from Utah for a reunion. But I must say its not so attractive in the sense that Vlade is a bad contract to acquire with 24.4M in 4 yrs left. Sasha is a salary filler being an expiring contract.
We may however, re-structure it to Walton for Artest striaght up. This way, its SF for SF. But this is an ace I wil be keeping in my sleeve. Assuming I already have JO and Camby, my interior is about as tough as the Pistons or Spurs. There would not be a pressing need for Artest.
To address one final note, I would still like to acquire Murray and Nazr from Detroit. If Maxiell is available too he's fine. |

My Likely Laker team:
Farmar / #48 / Eddie Jones (MLE 1.5M)
Kobe / Vujacic /
Artest or Walton / Evans / Jason Kapono (MLE 3.5M)
JO / Turiaf / Radmanovic
Camby / Mihm / |

| Artest is a bad fit in the triangle, while defensively he is an upgrade and will take the load of kobe, he is not the ideal fit offensively for the triangle |

| That is why I am sayin we evaluate the team after the 2 trades are done. We already are a beast down low should JO and Camby come over but the weakest Position we'll have is the PG spot. That is why perhaps Tinsley can help out should we take him in. If we do, we can no longer get Artest. |

| How can Artest be a bad fit in the triangle? He can shoot and finish on the inside and pass the ball (average but not horrid). |

If lakers do this Jermaine thing, there line up is going to be like this:
Famar
Bryant
Walton
Jermaine
Bynum or Mihm
They cant get all of these players that you guys want if they get another player that gets as much as Kobe. |

i would take artest over battier any day of the week. artest was an mvp candidate 3 seasons ago and still has many good years ahead of him. he is better in everything except 3 pt shooting and ron isnt bad himself. plus with all thats happened, ron isnt going to command 10 mil a season when he becomes a free agent and LA is the place he wants to be at. |
