only prob is that aside from Drew none of the Lakers other bigs can mix it up at all. Pau, Mimh, and Lamar are all finesse. Ronni was out matched down under but at least he threw is body around and went for those blocks. Kwame can't do much but he CAN put a body on a true 5 or 4. ... but I don't think Kwame will be back in purple anytime soon. Don't know who else out there would be a scrapper .....

sure, when we're winning by a huge margin in the last few minutes of a game. or vice-versa. lol. seriously, which power forwards in the league can he guard with a measure of success?

Lets face it, Mihm's good days are gone.

They clearly need a backup C.

    Losing Turiaf definetly hurt

i agree...we do need more of a true PF....how about someone like juwan howard?

Being the bigger of two forwards in a small lineup and actually playing power forward are two very different things. Luke does not play power forward. Don't consider him part of the PF depth chart because it sounds ridiculous.

Lakers don't need a back-up. Just sign BJ Mbenga back and everythings solid. Bynum is a stud...don't forget that.

I wasn't including him in the depth chart, I was jsut commenting that in some games Luke filled the PF spot the lineup was usually
    Fish
    Kobe
    Sasha
    Luke
    Pau/Ronny

I know he is a SF and that we need a legit backup PF. I think Elson is the best choce since he has the ability to step away from the basket a little bit

Sure, as long as andrew is healthy we'll be fine. But what if he gets injured again? Would you trust Mbenga to successfully fill in the center slot especially now that we don't have ronny anymore? Pau can play center true, but then we'll be back again to the rotation that had great difficulty against the celtics. I say we need a good backup power forward who can also play center. Mbenga is not it.

im not sold on mbenga at all....you seem to be forgetting about chris mihm. if he can stay healthy, id rather see him back bynum up. if he can be back in top form preinjury wise, mihm is solid. i always liked mihm. mihm put up good numbers in 04-05 (9.8 ppg 6.7 rpg 1.4 bpg) and 05-06 (10.2 ppg 6.3 rpg 1.2 bpg). hes a pretty good shot blocker and has that sweet hook shot (hey the one he airballed in the finals doesnt count..shaking off rust from lack of PT), has a nice face up jumper to 16 ft and he can knock free throws down. we would just need a back up to gasol at the 4 (aside from the possible hole at the 2 if we dont resign sasha)

I have been viewing all the free agents the pass month, and trying to decide who would be a perfect backup for the Lakers (to replace Turiaf). First of all if anyone considers Kwame coming back their nuts! We gave up an all-star in Caron Butler for him, and for three years Kwame was nothing but a clutsy timid headcase. Yeah he can throwdown the dunk once in a while with providing solid defense, but he is so unreliable. How many missed duck shots or fumbled passes did we see with him here.We can't keep trying to give trhis guy more chances to succeed (everyone still believes he can stoll live up to his number 1 draft pick caliber), and accept the fact that he just doesn't have the skills or confidence to be a productive player in the nba. We'd definitely be degressing with him coming back.

I do think we should persuit Carl Landry. He really progressed significantly his rookie year, and was one of the reasons the Rockets got on that hot streak. He could be our Leon Powe, and really be a spark off the bench. He can really get up and block shots, along with providing a polished interior offensive game. If we get him and hold onto him, he could possibly be a starter and a star for the lakers in the future.

I also think a saavy veteran like Theo Ratliff, can be what P.J. Brown did for the Celtics. Or better yet, how about getting P.J. Brown (who is an unrestricted free agent). These guys may have a year or two left in them, but they have the experience and leadership to help this team win a Championship. Look what happen when the lakers acquired A.C. Green and Ron Harper in 2000. Another option, and this may be pushing it, but we could sign Robert Horry to one year deal and see if he still has any magic left in him. Robert Horry is still loved in LA for what he did for us in those Championship runs, and bringing back another player from that team (like Derek fisher) can help boost our morale to help the Lakers win it all. On a downnote, he doesn't really hack it anymore and is sort of done. Maybe Robert Horry should consider retirement as an alternative.

One more name to throw at you is David Harrison. A solid young 7 foot center, who can serve as a productive role player with the team.

I agree that mihm is a solid player but again, the question is will he remain healthy enough throughout the season to contribute. What I want to see is we sign a versatile free agent that can play both power forward and center. By the way you have a RP flag in your avatar. Filipino ka rin?

The Lakers can use Gasol as a center and power foreward.

A platoon of DJ Mbenga and Chris Mihm is suffiecient. Mihm is still a decent post scorer and a solid defender while Mbenga brings good energy. I think as long as Mihm goes back to getting consistent playing time, he'll regain his form when remember he was a respectable starting center.

And what would happen if, God forbids, andrew gets injured again? We can't rely on Mihm to stay healthy all season long. Pau can play center true, but then we'll be back to the same line up that went up against the celtics. This time without Ronny. I'll say this again, lets give kwame another chance. If not him, maybe olokowandi then.
