i know. i know. from unreliable hoopsworld. here is what eric pinky aka emplay has to say.
RUMOR HAS IT…
Today's section is geared exclusively towards the latest rumors floating around the NBA …
Turiaf Likely a Warrior: A number of writers have suggested that the Los Angeles Lakers might match the Golden State Warriors offer to Ronny Turiaf - if they can quickly fashion a trade to shed salaries like Lamar Odom, Luke Walton, Vladimir Radmanovic, and the like. The argument being if they can lower payroll to reduce the luxury tax hit - or even climb under the threshold - they'd be more likely to keep Turiaf.
The thinking here is specious because the luxury tax for the coming season won't be computed until the end of June. In other words, if the Lakers truly wanted to keep Turiaf - there is no pressure to make a deal before the deadline on Friday.
If they had intentions to make a trade at some point in the future (be it offseason or by the trade deadline), they would keep Turiaf now regardless of what was currently in the works. A deal at a later date would provide the same tax relief as a hastily thrown together move on Friday.
General Manager Mitch Kupchak has been consistent with his message that he intends to keep the team that got all the way to Game 6 of the NBA Finals together.
Unfortunately that doesn't appear likely in its entirety as Turiaf's offer from the Warriors of $17 million spread out over four seasons looks to be too much for the Lakers to reasonably match.
Turiaf is a great locker room guy. He's a positive contributor on the court. Ultimately he's not worth the $17 million plus luxury tax hit to the Lakers.
Certainly there could be a last minute change of heart; one source says Kupchak himself would like to keep Turiaf. The decision looks like it has come down from ownership and Turiaf will likely be a Warrior by the end of the day.
The most likely Turiaf replacement might be former Laker Kwame Brown, although the team has reportedly spoken to representatives for Kurt Thomas, Jorge Garbajosa and Francisco Elson.

| If not Kurt, Garbo would be the perfect combo forward to replace Ronny. A tough veteran big who can hit the three ball and run with the bench mob? SOLD. |

| Does anyone else get a Virus warning from going onto hoopsworld (at least I think it is hoopsworld - or hoop something or other)? I use NOD32 and it is particularly sensitive to malicious script of all types - just wondering. |

| Definitely would love to see kurt thomas. He would provide the toughness we need off the bench. I read he'd play for the vet's minimum w/the right team. Obviously u would think that LA would be one of the right teams on his list. I don't know alot about Gjobo except a 3 point shooting big man is probally not something we need. I'm all for the short/mid range jumper, tough defense and rebounding Thomas could provide. Mitch, make that one happen!!!! |

| If we can sign Thomas for a decent price I would like to see us get him and Garba, since Garba ia basically in Shaun Livingston like situation. If we got both of them we would most likely have to really try to move Vlad, Walt or Mihm |

| id be amazed if turiaf started for gs. Resigning sasha has nothing to do with us being able to offer someone our midlevel exception |

Exactly!....he is probably the league's best backup Center[rebounding-wise]
Or how about Chris Wilcox?
HIS TOUGHNESS AND AGRESIVENESS REMINDS ME SO MUCH OF RONNY |

From what I've read, it has everything to do w/resigning him, since that's what we're going to offer to sign him with. I may be wrng, but that's what I've seen. |

no its not as easy as that, check this out and see if you can read it all lol
http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#20
while he is unsigned he adds on 130% of last seasons salary to our cap, we can still sign a player using the mid level exception but not to its full value as that 30% counts against this.
EARLY BIRD EXCEPTION -- This is a weaker form of the Larry Bird exception, and is also a component of the Veteran Free Agent exception. Players who qualify for this exception are called "Early Qualifying Veteran Free Agents" in the CBA. A player qualifies for this exception after playing two seasons without being waived or changing teams as a free agent. Using this exception, a team may re-sign its own free agent for 175% of his salary the previous season or the average player salary, whichever is greater (see question number 24 for the definition of "average salary." Also note that for 2005-06 they used a defined figure of $5 million). Early Bird contracts must be for at least two seasons (which limits this exception's usefulness -- it's often better to take a lower salary for one more season and then have the full Bird exception available the next season) and no longer than five seasons. A player can receive raises up to 10.5% of the salary in the first season of the contract using this exception.
If the player was a first round draft pick and just completed the second year of his rookie scale contract, but his team did not exercise their option to extend the contract for the third season (see question number 3 , then this exception cannot be used to give him a salary greater than he would have received had the team exercised their third year option. In other words, teams can't decline the option in order to get around the salary scale and give the player more money.
If the player is a restricted free agent with two years of service and receives an offer sheet from a new team, the player's prior team may use the Early Bird exception to match the offer sheet (see question number 36 for restricted free agency).
Now from that you can see, i suspect the lakers made the offer of 175% of last seasons salary and sasha wants the average salary but at the same time doesnt want to leave the lakers, hence why he is hoping to get an offer sheet from another team to force the lakers hand to match the offer, crap gets complicated man |

Tempy,
Yes, I have reached your same final conclusion as well. This is all well and good for Vujacic, however, there is a rather large caveat for him. This would be in the case that he really desires to resign with the Lakers, but because of the signing delays implicit in this way of doing things that the Front Office itself also has time to get cold feet and start looking around for other solutions. In other words, they could just wind up signing somebody else to replace him, somebody that wants less money. So, I understand why Vujacic is trying to yank their chain, but he may end up regretting it if he plays too hard to get! |
