The Hornets, after a long period of stagnant moves, finally made a trade, sending Brendan Haywood, and their '13 1st rounder to the Clippers for Sean Williams, and former Hornet Amir Johnson.
The Hornets made the deal to ship out the disgruntled Haywood, frustrated by his lack of playing time due to the acquisition of Zaza Pachulia, and to get some young pieces for the future, while still getting tougher by the day. When asked why they did this deal, a Hornets FO official said, "We're always looking to get better. Even when it doesn't seem like it. Whether our team is at the top of the league, the middle, or the bottom, we are constantly looking at ways to improve the team. So far this season, we have been giving up almost 104 points per game to our opponents, and we felt that was unacceptable. Hopefully with the acquisition of Amir and Sean, we can help bolster our defense while our starters are resting. We hope that we can quickly see a difference in our defense mindset. " When asked about the teams future plans, and if this deal was a big part of it, he said, "Absolutely. As I said. We're always looking to get better. Right now, we're looking at building our future around Ramon, Amir, and Sean. We feel those three, with work and dedication, can lead our team for years to come after our current stars are gone. We always loved Amir, and we were very sad to see him sign with the Jazz a couple years back. When he was with us, he was a big part of our championship run, and we hope that he can help us get there again, and Sean can be the missing piece. We also feel like this upcoming offseason, we can add some more pieces for our future" Does this signal that the Hornets will let their stars walk after this current season?
Amir and Sean were both pleased to come to New Orleans. "I loved it here when I played here," said Amir Johnson. "The constant buzz in the streets never keeps you tired or too fatigued." When Sean was asked how he felt about playing for the Hornets, he said, "I feel privileged to be in this situation. I know that to be mentored by guys like Dirk and RayRay will improve my game substantially by itself. I'm excited."
