Spurs On Top
Last year the San Antonio Spurs made a trade to acquire Ron Artest. That
did not pan out so well. At least in the regular season that is. San Antonio
was able to pull it together and rode that momentum into the Western
Conference finals. The Spurs found themselves with the short end of the
stick after the controversial series and had to find a way to improve during
the off season.
After a few key signings, re-signings and a couple of trades, the Spurs find
themselves right in the thick of it, right where they want to be: first place in
the western conference.
Andre Iguodala was the teams first priority. He has shown flashes of
greatness and is expected to vastly improve over the next couple of years.
They handled that situation very quickly with a max contract extended over
7 years, 8 if the Spurs decide to add a year which is now allowed.
"I get to just focus on basketball now. I don't have to worry about money
or contracts for a long time, I can just concentrate on bringing more
championships to this city." said Iguodala, "I'm grateful this organization
thought of me as an important piece to the team. Now I just got to help us
win some ball games."
Alongside Iguodala, free agents Ron Artest, Anderson Varejao, Michael
Finley and Damon Stoudamire are each returning to the team. Artest and
Varejao both signed three year contracts while the fourteen year veterans
Damon Stoudamire and Michael Finley both signed on for one more run at
the championship.
"Once you've tasted victory you only want to win." said Finley, "We knew
our best chance at another ring was with the Spurs."
With all 5 starters and important role players all returning, the front office
reared it's head toward improving their bench, and through free agency
they did.
Offers and a bit of luck landed them not only Stephon Marbury but All-Star
point guard Baron Davis as well. Marburry took San Antonio's minimum
offer while Davis took the entire MLE. But with three starter quality point
guards, the front office knew it had to beef up another spot on the team's
roster.
Through a trade with the Chicago Bulls, the Spurs were able to get Mike
Miller in exchange for Baron Davis. Picks and cash were also added to
influence San Antonio's choice of player.
"When I found out I was traded from the Sonics to the Bulls I was happy."
said Miller, "Then when they said I was going to San Antonio, I was
ecstatic! I knew they were great, and with me coming off the bench I knew
I could help out at the small forward spot."
And that he did. He scored 20 points in his debut and helped lead the
Spurs to a 4 point victory over the Anaheim Kings.
At 22-6 through the first 30 days of the 2010 season, the Spurs find
themselves in first place and on the inside track to home court advantage
through the playoffs.
After Tony Parker's injury, Marbury has stepped up and held down the
point guard position. "Parker is one of the leaders on this team, he's the
starter, he's the play maker. I'm just filling in untill he gets back." said a
smiling Marburry, while adding, "But I'm no scrub coming off the bench, I
could start on a lot of the teams out there, I just think San Antonio can get
to the finals and win it, that's the only goal coach and everyone really ever
talks about"
This team knows only one thing, win a championship, everything else is a
failure in the eyes of these players. Championship... that is the only thing
on the mind of this city and this team.
Family Ties
With the addition of free agent Salim Stoudamire, the San Antonio spurs
became the first team to have two cousins on their roster since the Toronto
Raptors had both Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady in the late 90's. "I'm
going to see him all the time now, practice, games, holidays, there's no
getting away from him" joked Damon Stoudamire in reference to Salim
Stoudamire, "I think he'll feel a little more comfortable having me around.
It'll make the transition a little smoother." Andre Iguodala had his own
opinion on the matter as well, "They got some inside jokes, but that's about
it. The team did adopt a saying though, we tell em ugly must run in the
family." We'll stay out of this and let the reader's decide.

Damon or Salim? |
