    Quote:
Sam Amick, the writer from sacramento who re-ignited the Lamar for Artest trade rumor, was interviewed on a sacramento radio show on 7/8 and discussed the Ron Artest situation. He actually drops quite a bombshell in the interview that I’m shocked hasn’t broken widely…

He said in the interview that a lower member of the Buss family basically told Mitch to get it done. “Get it done” as in get a deal for Artest done. He mentions the same pieces he did in his blog. We would have to give up Lamar and take on Kenny Thomas.

He also dropped Farmar’s name as a possibility in the deal and future draft picks.

You can listen to the interview. (On the left side are recent interviews from the show. Scroll down and click on “Sam Amick 7/8″.)

I dont think one member of the family would have enough influence never mind a lower member to force Mitch to do it, but it makes me laugh how teams want the lakers draft picks when was the last decent pick we had?

i honestly dont mind giving up farmar although we would need another pg to fill in the whole, but i have never really been that confident in farmar. i would be all for this deal if we didnt have to take on kenny thomas. i would much rather have mikki moore or another pf or pg if we are giving up farmar.

So, let's see - we give up Odom, and we have to throw in Farmar as well, for the pleasure of getting a screwball only for one year because we will not be able to resign him, and on top of that we have to eat an absurd contract for two years of a player that has absolutely no earthly utility! Let's add to that that we won't be able to give Bynum a contract extension at the end of next year in order to pay Thomas, and so we will probably have to trade Bynum during the next regular season just so that we can get some value from him rather than losing him for an offer sheet that we will not have the money to match. Have I got this straight? Is not Kobe Bryants contract coming up for renewal at the end of next year? To do all this to have Artest for one measly year seems to be a voyage into meanders of the mind of a paranoid schizophrenic! To heck with Artest! As much as we might like to have him it is not worth having to let go of our franchise players to accomodate this Thomas, let alone also giving up Farmar for the sheer pleasure of having to take it where the sun never shines!!!

EDIT: Could somebody with more knowledge of the finances of the Lakers crunch the numbers for me. What will our finances look like at the end of next year presuming Thomas, presuming Artest renegotiation, presuming Bynum contract extension, and presuming (but I am not sure that it has to be renegotiated at the end of next year) a possible Kobe Bryant renegotiation. How would all of this work?

    To answer your question cuckooroller...

No matter what occurs regarding a trade or not, it will not effect Bynum unless Buss does not want to pay even more luxury tax.

    1. Let's say no trade happens and they re-sign Sasha for whatever and LO does not re-sign. LA will still be right at the cap or over next year. However, LA has Bynum's "Bird Rights".

Bird rights mean that a player who has played for one NBA team for 3 years can be resigned for whatever regardless of the salary cap.

    2. Let's say a trade does occur and we have Artest and Thomas. Here LA would definitely be over the cap, but Bynum is still signed for whatever. (Bird rights).

    3. For Kobe he is in the same boat. He has played for LA his whole career and we have his Bird rights. He probably will opt out and re-sign another deal for whatever amount, let's say 6 years $100 (does not matter). Either way no salary cap issue whether LA is over or under.

    4. Let's say no trade and they re up Lamar for whatever. LA has bird rights here as well. He could sign for whatever, maybe $8 or $9M per for 5 years.

    5. If LA makes the trade, Artest could only be signed for the MLE because LA does not have bird rights for him (correct me here anyone If I am wrong). SO Ron could be gone if another team wants to and can offer more than the MLE.

    6. The other question will be Ariza. LA does not have his bird rights, so he will be open to other teams and with LA over the cap, LA can only offer the MLE or something less. This is his contract year this year. As the NBA has shown this is when players put it together and really play well. So look for Ariza to want some cash after this season.

    7. Regardless of a trade or not with the Gasol trade and Kobe and Bynum on the roster with a possible Lamar, LA will be over the salary cap for the next few years no matter what.

    8. One thing I could add is this is not affected by keeping Turiaf. This would just have LA deeper into the luxury tax. That would have to turn on how much money Buss is willing to 'throw away' on the luxury tax, nothing more.

Hopefully the money spent by Buss makes for a few championships during this period of big spending.

Here is the the "Bird Rights' exception to the salary cap...

Perhaps the most well-known of the NBA's salary cap exceptions, it is so named because the Boston Celtics were the first team permitted to exceed the salary cap to re-sign one of their own players (in that case, Larry Bird). Free agents who qualify for this exception are called "qualifying veteran free agents" or "Bird Free Agents" in the CBA, and this exception falls under the auspices of the Veteran Free Agent exception. In a nutshell, the Larry Bird exception allows teams to exceed the salary cap to re-sign their own free agents, at an amount up to the maximum salary. To qualify as a Bird free agent, a player must have played three seasons without being waived or changing teams as a free agent. This means a player can obtain "Bird rights" by playing under three one-year contracts, a single contract of at least three years, or any combination thereof. It also means that when a player is traded, his Bird rights are traded with him, and his new team can use the Bird exception to re-sign him. Bird-exception contracts can be up to six years in length.

We have the money to go over the luxury tax just like NY does. Buss could do it and I see him doing it if it means a ring. If not, Mitch will find a way to make this work. Artest is a good player and he may not be better(or better) than LO but Ron is what we need. Low post scorer would sure help a lot too. He just needs to lose his attitude and needs to lay off the scoring and he'll be fine.

in bynum's case jim Buss was NOT a lower member.

The fact that it says "lower member" basically kills the whole "GET IT DONE" command!

Probably Jeanie Buss? She's also dating Phil Jackson so she probably has some influence in all the decision-making and etc.

The more I think about it, the more I realize what a stupid trade this would be. Yes, Artest would be able to help them in the toughness category, and he is not soft like LO can be at times. But you really think after next year he is gonna resign with the Lakers for the same money or less?? Haha. If Turiaf is able to get 4 million a year for cheerleading on the bench, Artest is most definitely gonna get more than that, probably somewhere upwards toward the 10 million number. And what is all this **** about taking Kenny Thomas? He's basically the same thing as Kwame Brown. Guy doesn't do much. And we'll be paying him 8 mil for 2 years for pretty much not doing anything? Not to mention, next offseason, they will have to re sign Bynum to a huge extension somewhere in the 15 million a year range, re sign Kobe, and re sign Ariza. Haha. Good luck with that. And everyone is saying, "Oh, Artest knows he can win a championship with the lakers, so he will resign for less money." Hello?!?!? This is Ron Artest we're talking about. The guy is CRAZY. He says something at one time, and then the next day, he might change his mind. And then he might change his mind back. The NBA today is all about $$$$, whether people like to admit it or not.

Zee: A lower member of the Buss family could mean any Buss besides Jerry. I woud think any other Buss besides Jerry is a lower Buss member, not the man himself.

Does anyone notice that all of these rumors and comments are generated out of Sacramento. Note Sacramento has already made it clear the Artest is not in their long term plans. Kenny Thomas also is not in Reggie Theus' main rotation and he has somewhat of a bad contract.

Sam Amick is also the Kings beat writer, how would he know what a 'lower member of the Buss' family would say to Mitch. This is starting to feel like last off-season where everyone was hot on O'Neal, Kidd, etc... The only difference is Kobe is happy this off-season with the team, why can't we as fans be happy also.

laker2thegrave: I feel you, but what happens is that our weaknesses were exposed in the playoffs and without a doubt Artest would be an answer to one of those problems(SF position). We still would have to address the issue of a big coming off the bench who can make some sort of an impact.

So when people start getting the itch for things to get shored up and it seems the answers to certain problems can get done of course there will be talk and more talk about it. I believe the Lakers only need minor tweaks, but they can't stay the same in my opinion.
