Assistant coach Tom Thibodeau taught the Lakers' star when Bryant was still in high school.

BOSTON -- Kevin Garnett has known Kobe Bryant for a long time. Tom Thibodeau has known Bryant even longer.

Thibodeau, the Boston Celtics' associate head coach in charge of defense, was a Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach back when Bryant was a Lower Merion High prep who would hurry after school to join current 76ers players for training and scrimmages. Thibodeau helped build the foundation of Bryant's game, which Bryant said should help Boston considerably in the NBA Finals.

"He has an unfair advantage," Bryant said Saturday. "He started drilling me, NBA basketball drills, when I was 14. So he kind of has inside information on what I like to do, because he taught me most of the stuff.

"I've been facing his defenses here for some time, and they're tough – very, very tough. Every single team he has been on has had great strategies and physical defense. He's awesome."

In 19 NBA seasons, Thibodeau's teams have finished in the league's top 10 in defense 15 times. He most recently assisted Jeff Van Gundy in Houston. This season, the Celtics led the league with their 41.9 percent field-goal defense, and Garnett won his first NBA Defensive Player of the Year award.

Celtics head coach Doc Rivers does not permit his assistant coaches to conduct interviews with the media.

    PIERCE IMPROVING

Celtics leading scorer Paul Pierce reported significant improvement in his sprained right knee Saturday and said he "definitely" will play Game 2 on Sunday despite some stiffness.

"Definitely a step forward," he said.

Pierce was actually moving with less of a limp than Boston center Kendrick Perkins, who has a high left-ankle sprain. Pierce took part in Boston's morning walk-through, but Perkins did not. Both were injured in the third quarter of Game 1 Thursday night.

Perkins said he was about 80 percent. Pierce was moving well enough that Rivers even suggested Pierce could be 100 percent soon.

"I'm hoping he will be eventually in the series," Rivers said.

    NOTES

Longtime Phil Jackson assistant Tex Winter said Jackson's reputation for winning only because of great players bothers him: "I think it does. He won't admit it." … Despite Boston being ahead in the series, 1-0, Perkins called Game 2 a "must-win" for the Celtics with the next three games at Staples Center. … Lamar Odom said the Lakers watched video of Game 1 again Saturday and again came away encouraged: "We're all right." … Jerry West will take part in an NBA ceremony Monday at LAX to welcome the Larry O'Brien Trophy to Los Angeles.

NOW, let's see what some Celtic fans think about this article. Some seem to think that this is just an excuse:

    Excuses.....excuses.....

    LA just isn't good enough.

Hopefully you guys will turn-up before tip-off to inspire your team in game 3, unlike many Laker fans who turn up halfway through the 1st quarter.

Boston fans arrive an hour before.....that's what Celtic pride is all about!!!

No passion, no heart in the Lakers.....thats why Boston will raise their 17th championship banner.

Hey Donut King, did you seriously create an account just so you can write that? Correct me if I'm wrong but the Lakers came back from 24 down with LESS than 8 minutes to go in the 4th and got it within 2. All of Boston was a nervous wreck. To say the Lakers have no passion or heart is just BS. If they had no passion or heart, they would've just given up. THINK before you talk so you don't embarrass yourself...especially when you're in the other team's fan forum. It seriously makes you look like an idiot. Not saying that you are, but it'll just further the evidence that some people don't think, but like to talk out of their a**

8 minutes of basketball doesn't win games.

48 minutes does, hence why the Celtics won.

    Who's the idiot now?

Your team doesn't have the heart to beat the MIGHTY CELTICS.

    Deal with it.

Kobe has changed since high school. The Lakers should have taken advantage of the double teaming of Kobe. Kobe is the man. He rises above everything and almost pulled this one off.

    Donut King...

Yeah, 48 minutes of basketball wins games, but if that's the case what happened to the Celtics when they let the Lakers come back. Looks like they just played about 40 minutes of basketball and almost let it slip away. You're a typical Celtic fan. They all like to say MIGHTY CELTICS like they're some gift from the gods or something. Sounds like something you see on the menu at McDonalds.

But let me remind you, with the advantage the Celtics had at the FT line, they shouldn't have had to hold on to the lead. They should have been able to sit down Garnett and Pierce, but I saw them the whole time, even while up 24 points. I guess Doc Rivers wasn't too sure about the victory either.

And like I said, I wasn't calling you an idiot...once again proving that some people don't think before they talk. Now before you say something stupid again, I'm saying some people...not you and I'm not calling you an idiot so don't come here insulting me cause I'm not insulting you. Get it? I hope so because if I have to explain it again it proves something.

I'm so scared of the MIGHTY KIDS MEAL! Wow...I know, I know, all you have for us is...let me guess, The Fakers? I'm sorry, but that's old. By the way, the mighty kids meal part was in no way meant to be funny...but like I said, using the word "Mighty", it just sounds lame

the celtics didnt play 48 minutes of basketball either. they played 40 and almost saw the game slip through their fingers because they were shell shocked. they didn't dominate in the end, nor did they win convincingly...they escaped. and now they're going to LA to get taken to the wood shed, because the Lakers have attained the momentum and we want revenge!

I couldn't agree with you more. The first game was nothing but drama, lucky three point shots, fake injuries, and bad calls.

In all honesty, I think Kobe is waking up now. Game 3- whatever will be a horse of another color.......
