The Lakers could wait to extend the contract of Andrew Bynum until his receives a clean bill of health.
He underwent a second examination on Monday and is waiting for the results of an exam on Wednesday, which could mean surgery on his troublesome left knee.
He has one more year remaining on his contract but could sign an extension of up to five years this July.
He will make $2.8 million next season should L.A. decide to wait to extend his current deal.

| Good move for the Lakers. Don't just hand out an extension for a guy who might possibly sit out more games. Wait until he's 100% and solid, and negotiate from there. |

I wonder if and what the FO could negotiate into his contract if he can not come back from surgery in a timely manner. Anyone know the answer to this.
This is a horrible catch-22 situation for the FO. If they don't sign him over the summer and he has the year we all expect of him next year, he can demand (and will get) maximum salary for his number of years in the league, which will be roughly 16 million a year. However, if they sign him over the summer, they can probably get a decent discount, yet they they would be taking a risk if he turns out to be injury prone.
Before I found out surgery is likely, I said re-sign him, but now I am just not sure it make business sense. He is due 3.7 million next year, so I guess they should only do it if they can get a real bargain. |

| If he's healthy going into next season (meaning in October), they need to lock him up right away. If we wait to see if he stays healthy through the season and he does, it's likely we won't be able to afford him. |

Win lose or draw with bynum this lakers team looks good for the future and hpefully Bynum understands that when it comes time to talk new contract
the Lakers No longer "NEED" Bynum so I think the FO has the upperHand..
Although If they just let him go for after how much they have invested in him there would be riots in LA! |

| Riots in LA???? That is pure BS. The Lakers have to watch out about signing somebody for 80 mil. We sure don't want another Brian Grant type contract where we were still paying even after he left. |

Not so fast...there are 20+ other teams that would KILL to have him, which is why, if we don't re-sign him this summer, he will demand and receive a maximum deal. |

| I would say offer him a long term deal, something like 5 years 48-52 million. He may or may not accept that. But the biggest issue here is that we as Laker fans have to start realizing that he may never be the same. Grant Hill? Kenyon Martin? Remember what happened to those guys? |

| Wait till he gets a clean bill of health. He is a restricted free agent at the end of next year. I really doubt Byno will rashly sign a contract without seeing what his true market value is. That of course would be determined by playing a year of healthy Basketball in 08-09. If the Lakers need to pay him then pay him. I dont know about you but I see him being better than Yao Ming in the immediate future which makes him the best in the west. That also makes him second best in the league. To have one of the top two centers in the game I guess one would have to pay him. |

I agree. The reason why the Lakers management has been very careful about his rehab may be because they wanted to make sure he will be good for a long period of time as a Laker. No need to rush into signing him to a long term contract with his injury. Not too many athletes were able to return to their pre-injury form with a knee injury like Drew's. |

| I still cannot believe that Drew's injury ended up being so serious. I just can't comprehend it...it didn't look like it was THAT bad. For now, I'll just pray for him and hope he can get back to his old self. |

| The Lakers cannot afford him yet right? They might have to lose Lamar to keep Drew and Lamar expires after 2009. Maybe it's a business strategy rather than a medical necessity. Afterall the NBA is a business first. |

| I don't think the Lakers will let Lamar Odom go. He is too valuable to the team. The Lakers would like to keep this group together for at least five years. Other adjustment will be made around the starting five to where they can sign Lamar. |

| They should not give bynum the max on his extension, he should take a bit less about 9-11 mil per year like manu and tony parker did for the spurs so that they could keep the core group together. |

| Andrew Bynum is one of the most important pieces of Lakers. He must stay no matter. |
