    Quote:
Did you see the craziness of the video-game highlight, Kobe Bryant 2008, a toss against the backboard that he caught for a dunk?

Did you feel the floor burns of those three steals, Grand Theft Basketball 2008, consecutive heists in the final minutes?

Did you hear the Lakers come back from a 10-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter Friday night to silence the head-throbbing noise and nearly trash the best home court in basketball?

"We could have won this game," Lamar Odom said, shaking his head.

But the story was what you didn't see.

The moral was what you couldn't feel.

The outcome was due, in part, to what you could barely hear.

    paugasol.

Faced with the most intense, physical postseason game of his career, late-season giant Pau Gasol shrank to an indiscernible size in the Lakers' 104-99 loss to the Utah Jazz at EnergySolutions Arena.

With their first loss in seven postseason games, the Lakers weren't the only ones to reveal their spring mortality.

Gasol, a novice in these deeper waters, proved he also can sink.

Handed its first real test of June-worthiness, that great basketball brain flunked.

Faced with its first playoff adversity, that gentle smile became a whine.

Jarred for the first time with playoff desperation, those beautiful passes were junked.

"It was loud," Gasol said. "It was intense."

In his tired eyes you could see the confirmation of one more sentence.

    It was awful.

For the first time in this postseason, Gasol did not dress in the crowded visiting locker area afterward, instead retrieving his clothes and dressing in a quieter spot in the back.

It was precisely that way in the game.

Suddenly, if the Lakers aren't careful with their two-games-to-one lead, it could be that way for the rest of the summer

"I can do much better," Gasol acknowledged.

On that shot, he was perfect.

In a game in which Utah's two big men combined for 49 points, he scored 12.

In a game that featured 37 Lakers free throws, he didn't get to the foul line once.

In a game that featured many touches in 40 minutes, he had just one assist.

And then there were the turnovers.

Gasol had a team-high five blunders, throwing the ball in the stands or dribbling it off his foot or just losing it to players who wanted it more.

With seemingly every turnover came a glare at the referee.

Sometimes that glare continued while the Jazz was scoring at the other end.

Always, that glare burned his coach.

"This is a game in which Pau was looking at the referees every time he got stripped there in the first half," said Phil Jackson. "They were just attacking him every time he put the ball on the floor. Those turnovers changed the course of the game."

Attacking him every time he put the ball on the floor? Hmm.

The Jazz was doing what the Denver Nuggets could not do, but what every other likely Lakers opponent this postseason will certainly do.

And on the odd chance they weren't going to do it before Friday night, well, they'll be doing it now.

By disappearing, Gasol has become the Lakers' marked man.

By complaining so much to the officials, he might become one of the league's marked men.

"I shouldn't have done that," he said of his constant complaints. "I have to learn to play through certain things, whether I agree with them or not, I have to play through it."

Give him credit for at least staying on the floor.

In the fourth quarter he had a basket, and two rebounds, and a hand in one of those three consecutive steals.

"Struggle is a big word," Ronny Turiaf said of his teammate. "He did not have a great night, true, but he kept playing."

Alas, though, he actually played too long, throwing the ball away in the final seconds with the Lakers trailing by five.

It was the Lakers' 18th turnover, and listen to the simple wisdom of Kobe Bryant.

"We can't turn the ball over 18 times," he said.

They also can't wither when the wind gets tough and, man, with the Utah crowd screaming and chanting for nearly three consecutive hours, that was one mighty wind.

"Sometimes the amount of noise is daunting," Jackson acknowledged before the game. "It's somewhat paralyzing if you're not in tune with your players."

Paralyzing, and pounding, which my head is still doing as I'm writing this story an hour after the game.

The only time the crowd was quiet was when American Idol's David Archuleta sang the national anthem for the hometown folks, a song that I dutifully relayed home to my 13-year-old daughter on my cellphone.

It was the last arena call I was able to hear.

When asked about Gasol, Odom chose his words carefully.

"You have to stay poised on the road," he said. "We did not do a good job of that."

If Gasol didn't understand that before, he understands it now.

"I've got to go do my job now, protect the ball, go harder, play physical," he said.

And maybe, while he's at it, he could also send a postcard back to Andrew Bynum.

    Wish you were here.

Im going to reserve my criticism towards Pau for the simple fact that this was the first game he has ever played in that type of environment in the NBA. Now hopefully he's learned his lesson and comes out on Sunday mentally focused. A bad game for the most part and they lose by five. Nothing to hold your head down on.

Pau has been a great addition and we would probably not be here if not for him. I was watching Pau a lot and I noticed that he is simply being over powered and lets put a little luck into the equation also. Did anyone notice all the lucky bounces Utah got on the offensive end? It's almost like the Utah Jazz know they will most likely miss the shot and they take their chances with rebounding. Pau had a tough night but he will only get better.

Hey guys. As Kobe would say, we win as a team, we lose as a team. I can give you ten woulda's that woulda won the game for us. (It was that close.) 1. We hit a few more free throws -- not a string of one of two's down the stretch. 2. Kobe doesn't slip and fall. 3. That "offa da foot" pass they luckily turned into a basket. 4. Some lucky 24 second tip in they made. Pure friggin' luck. 5. We made just two more of our threes. DFish missed a critical one, Kobe couldn't hit a three with a foot wide basket. 6. DFish gets called for a ticky-tack by a homer ref and hasta sit. 7. Pau learning refs don't give you calls away from home and finally plays a bad game. 8. An off-night of coaching by the Zen Master. 9. Eighteen turnovers. 10. Lotsa lucky bounces for the Jazz.

All these things had to go wrong PLUS Boozer shooting lights-out at the end, Okur hitting his 3 point shots and Deron Williams playing super. Plus some hometown reffing (which we get at Staples) which ya gotta expect. AND STILL we coulda won.

Let me tell you....Jazz is toast. Lakers by 20 Sunday. Take that as the truth.

Like any other game, there need to be some improvements. The Lakers have to improve in the physical play department, especially Pau. Too many times I saw Pau flying out of bounds or getting knocked around, that's one reason he's not getting a lot of rebounds. We really need Farmar to get back and soon. Before going from Derek to Jordan wasn't much of a drop off, now I can't wait until Derek comes back in because Jordan dribbling and passing around the perimeter just isn't working, I would love to see him be agressive and take the ball to the rack and get some people some open shots like a pg should. As you can see, Utah is not going to leave our shooters open, so that's going to leave a lot of open lanes for Kobe and Lamar to drive. Plus Pau really needs to be more assertive on the offensive end in trying to score, get Boozer and Okur in foul trouble.

Speaking of foul trouble, if Pau is more assertive then you're talking about Boozer and Okur sitting on the bench and being non-factors, that's what happened the first two games, and that's what needs to happen again.

The Lakers right from the start didn't show any energy what so ever. It seemed like they were playing in slow motion for most of the night. I was not that impressed with the Jazz. The Lakers should have beat this team IF they had just played like they usually do. The turn overs? Too many!
The Lakers will bounce back Sunday and will blow this team away.

Ok guys.. there's no way to be worried.. we didnt play well the key loss was all those TO'S during the first half while KB was looking to get involve his teamates. Pau has a bad Night, dont worry Pau everybody can have a bad game night.. he's a fine and inteligent player, he will make the right adjustments.
Guys.. lets think a little bit on this... the jazz played a very enegizided game with a super game of Boozer and Williams and we did 18 TO'S
and we lost by five!! That was our bad night ? We saw the Jazz playing at its all.. that's the best they can do.. Boozer 20plus points and almost the whole team in double figure.. We score less than a 100th for the first time in playoffs and it was 99 points with our bench not having a good game Pau struggling Fisher with early fouls, and kb with 8 points in the first half.. i just smile when i think in all of this... and the jazz crowd screaming for almost 3 hours...and YES.. the beat us by 5 points...jaja.. we will be back on track and get focus for game 4 sunday GO LAKERS!

I don,t know what game you candy a$$es were watching but the whole team had a bad nite. You all sound like Jazz fans as soon as the lakers drop one game. If they do not win one more game this season, I would be happy. They have come a long way from all of the adversity they had to overcome this season, and you so called Lakers Fans blame that loss on the best thing to happen to the Lakers this year. Get real, look at yourselves whining like a bunch of losers after the Lakers lost one game in Utah's hell arena. Where is your Laker pride?

That crossed my mind. He's like Samson. Enough with the hair, Pau! Don't get it cut again until the end of the post season!

Pau needs to accept the torture test and attack the boards. Rony had ONE rebound. That is pathetic. We will beat the Jazz but the Western finals an championship round may be a different story if these guys don't decide to attack the boards.

We can't blame the rebounding for the loss...it was 32-35 in favor of the Jazz...the first two games the Jazz did alot better on the boards...the reason it looks so bad is because Boozer had 20 rebounds all by himself, but atleast they didn't get 25 offensive rebounds as a team again...even the 2000-2001 Lakers lost one game...

you guys forget that Pau is playing out of position. He's a power forward, not a center. Banging bodies with those hefty centers isn't gonna bode well for him. Once AB comes back, I think it'll be much easier for him, since it will give him more freedom, and allow him to do what he wants to do.
