Now that some of the series are heading closer into the 2nd Round, I'd like to take a moment and talk about 2 trades that teams made after we got Pau Gasol.
First off, the Dallas Mavericks. What was this team thinking? I know Kidd is good, but let's face it folks...he is past his prime. Kidd is a great passer, and point guard, but he's not young anymore. The Mavs gave up a promising young star in Devin Harris and a bunch of somewhat decent players for Kidd. I definitely think the Mavs were better without Kidd. But I guess Mark Cuban was in a scramble to make a trade because of Pau going to the Lakers and Shaq heading to the Suns. Yet another dumb move because Dallas is stuck with an aging Kidd. Then again, Cuban is just in it to make money and get high ratings, so he delt away a great young player and thought he could market Kidd a lot better. Well...let me just say...RETARD!!!
Last but not least...
The hapless Phoenix Suns. This has to be the blunder of the the century!!! How in the world do you trade the Matrix and a great young point guard in Marcus Banks for Shaq "The Little Engine that could" O'Neal???
This was just an absolute idiotic move by the Suns front office. Of course, this was spurned by the Lakers aquiring Gasol. So, yet another team mortgaging their future for stars that look like it's time retire. The Suns are a run and gun team!!! Putting Shaq in the middle made them extremely slow because he doesn't run the court as well as he did in his younger days. Obviously it showed as the Suns are knocked out of the first round by the World Champion Spurs.
The Laker of course, had the steal of the century!!! Giving up Butterfingers Brown and Crit (although I liked Crit alot!) for Pau Gasol! Teams were scrambling to make their team better after hearing about this trade. hahahaha...so looks like the teams that made the trades thought their team would be better...well obviously they're not because they're out of the playoffs.
It's Kobe's time and looks like a 2008 championship is right around the corner! |

First off, thank both God and Buddha we did not give up Bynum, LO, and fillers (to make the salaries work) to get Kidd. Mitch is not looking so dumb now.
Dallas gave up way too much to get Kidd (just as we would have). I am not even sure Harris for Kidd straight up (assuming that would have been possible, which it was not of course) would have been a good trade for Dallas. Cuban lost an extra $17 million or something because of DG, so I am not buying your argument that he is in it just for the $. He obviously felt something was needed and he is very passionate about his team.
I think the Dallas trade was worse personally. There were many people (not including myself of course) that felt the Shaq trade was at least a decent trade and the team seemed to do better with Shaq than Dallas with Kidd (not being able to beat over .500 teams etc.)
But in both cases, as Sir Charles pointed out on TNT, can you blame them? They felt they HAD to do something to account for the Pau trade and they KNEW they were not going anywhere with their teams after the Lakers acquired Pau. Keep in mind, that as far as everyone knew, the Lakers were going to have both Pau and Bynum by March. Thus they took a chance and it didn't work. Things often become crystal clear in hind sight.
There is in fact a very good article on this subject that also talks about other teams reacting to the Pau trade here: Domino effect is great for Lakers
I recommend you give it a quick read. |

just look at the huge luxury tax Cuban is paying! He isn't in it for the money the like Phoenix owner! Cuban got more than enough! I think he just wants to win a title!
Dallas has a payroll of $105,272,371 that means another 40mil $ in luxury tax he has to pay to the league!!
According to Forbes (last year with about a 90mil $ payroll)
1-Yr Value Chg. -1%
Ann. Value Chg. 2 7%
Debt/Value 3 27%
Revenue 4 $140 mil
Operating Inc. 5 $-1.6 mil
Player Expenses 6 $91 mil
Gate Receipts 7 $48 mil |

I knew from the start both of these trades were bad. I also mentioned on my posts that Kidd was too old when a lot of our forumites wanted to trade half of the Laker team for Kidd. I also knew that the Shaq trade was a bad trade and it was just a reaction to the Lakers getting Pau Gasol. Shaq in my opinion never did fit with the style of basketball the Sun's played. Actually it surprised me that the Sun even incorporated Shaq into any of their plays, but the Spurs made them pay dearly with the Shaq attack. Which I thought was Chicken S**t in the part of Popovich, but that is what he will do to win. It was either Shaq attack or lots of flopping. I am glad that Mitch Kupchak took his time and I assume with some help from Jerry West struck a deal with the Grizzlies. I am glad he didn't read this forum where a lot of our members wanted to give half of our team for Jermaine Oneal or Kidd. The Lakers come out with the best trade of the nba.
This team has a good chance of winning a championship even without Bynum. I personally think that we will need Bynum if we are to go all the way, but the Lakers are being very cautious with Andrew's knee and want to make sure he does not reinjure himself. Yet he might surprise us all and make it to some of the final games. |

Well, they say the best trades sometimes are the ones that aren't made. I won't lie, I wanted O'Neal, but not for what the Pacers were asking for. As for Kidd, he wouldn't have fit our offense ever. Now, as for the 2 trade teams that lost last nite, the Shaq trade was bad, but it did make some sense. Phoenix knew that the way they were constructed, they had no chance of winning the West, especially after the Pau trade. No way they could beat San Antonio and the Lakers. So they tried something different to compete w/the BIG(size) teams. It didn't work, I wouldn't have done the deal as a GM, but I can understand why they did. Now they have a old, aging, $20 million center, no cap space, and a old team in turmoil. The JKidd trade made absolutely no sense whatsoever, except that Mark Cuban got another name to put int he newspapers. They were better off before the trade. Now they are old, slow, small, over the cap limit. Not a good situation.
Axle,
I agree w/u, we might can win it all w/out Andrew, but it would be alot easier with him. I hope we see him towards the end of the conference finals to get ready for the Championship. Go Lakers |
