Spraying to all fields, interrupting Lakers title fever to remind everyone the Boston Celtics are 65-16:
•Even if the Lakers can battle through the deepest Western Conference playoff bracket in recent memory, I don't think they would have enough left to challenge the Celtics in the NBA Finals.
•The Celtics will finish 50 games above.500 after winning tonight's regular-season finale against New Jersey, even if they rest the Big Three (Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen) for the second consecutive game.
The Celtics started 29-3, went 12-6 during their "roughest" stretch and have won 10 of their past 11.
They also went 31-10 on the road, best mark in the NBA, and 34-6 at home, bettered only by Utah's 37-4 mark.
The Lakers became formidable down the stretch, winning 30 of their last 40.
And after winning tonight, Boston will be 32-8 in its last 40.
Enough said.
•With all of the Texas Rangers and Angels wearing No. 42 on Tuesday, to honor the late Jackie Robinson, you couldn't tell the players witha program.
•Angels right-hander Ervin Santana already has doubled his road victory total from 2007.
He's 2-0 with a 3.46 ERA in two starts away from home in 2008, compared to his 1-10 record and 8.38 ERA in 14 starts on the road in 2007.
Comeback Player of the Year candidate?
•The more time passes, the smarter Angels GM Tony Reagins looks.
Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera, Reagins' No. 1 offseason trade target when Cabrera was still employed by the Marlins, was batting .205 with three RBIs in 13 games through Monday.
The Marlins wanted two starting pitchers from the Angels as part of the package, but Reagins refused.
•Other big-name players off to slow starts in 2008 (through Monday's games): Boston's David Ortiz (.104), the Yankees' Jason Giambi (.107) and Johnny Damon (.213), Texas' Michael Young (.196), Atlanta's Mark Teixeira (.213), the Cubs' Alfonso Soriano (.175) and Philadelphia's Ryan Howard (.191).
•Dodgers center fielder Andruw Jones (.114, 2 RBIs through Monday) deserves his own paragraph in the futility department.
After signing a two-year, $36.2 million contract with the Dodgers, he also apparently needed a weight clause that would not guarantee his money unless he reported under a designated weight – or hit his weight.
The first weight clause I remember was in designated hitter Lamar Johnson's contract with the Texas Rangers in 1982.
•As soon as the Vancouver Canucks fired general manager Dave Nonis on Monday, the whispers about Ducks GM Brian Burke possibly returning to Vancouver increased in volume.
It's all unfounded speculation based on the fact Burke's wife, Jennifer, still has a radio show in Vancouver and commutes back and forth from Orange County.
I doubt Burke could find better owners to work for than Henry and Susan Samueli.
•The Big West must be a deep baseball conference, because UC Irvine (23-6, 5-4 in conference play) is in fourth place in the Big West standings but ranked fifth nationally by Baseball America.
Cal State Fullerton (20-12, 6-3) is ranked 15th nationally and tied for second with UC Santa Barbara (23-11, 6-3) in conference play, behind UC Davis (23-11, 5-1).
Long Beach State (19-14, 2-4) fell out of the national rankings after losing two of three at home to UCI over the weekend.
•It seems about as premature as talking about the 2012 presidential election compaign, but ESPN.com already is projecting its 64-team basketball bracket for the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
Don't tell Ben Howland this, but it projects UCLA, which has advanced to the Final Four three consecutive years, as the No. 7 seed in the South Regional. Ouch.
It also projects USC as the No. 9 seed in the South and Arizona as the No. 2 seed in the West.
Ba-da-bing!: From Jay Leno, noted late-night wise guy: "Did you see Kobe Bryant's new Nike commercial? He jumps over a speeding car. Do you know who's driving the car? Kobe's wife. I think she's still ticked off."

| IF we make it through the Western conference playoffs and IF the Celtics make it by the Wizards (very tough possible matchup for them in second round and the Pistons and IF we get Bynum and Ariza back by June then we will all be treated to a throwback to the 80s Lakers vs Celtics final. The Celtics are scary good but so are we full strength. Even the leagues best defense would be challanged to try to guard Bynum and Gasol and Kobe and Lamar and don't forget our deep and energetic bench. Remember Rocky 3 referring to Clubber Lange "He is just a man". The Celtics are just men. We can take them down! |

| Limpy! Don't you realize that the east is a lot weaker then the west. So naturally east teams have to play each other four times a season which gives the Celtics the edge to win more games then any team in the western conference. If the Celtics win the east and the Lakers win the west, I really believe that the Lakers now with Gasol in rythem with the Laker offense and we might even have a Bynum back by then. I think the Lakers could beat the Celtics in a seven games series. |

no question that the east is much weaker than the west but the Celt's lost only 5 games to the west as well. But anyhow there is no need for concern for them the Lakers have to win the west first to get to the finals. Who knows if the Celts can even make it to the finals the pistons i think can beat them. Also you are not safe from the injury bug come playoff time either. |
