The Los Angeles Lakers, of course, have managed to stay above the Western Conference scrum despite their own spate of injuries the Los Angeles Times reported.

Pau Gasol will not travel with the team to Oakland for Monday's game against Golden State, coach Phil Jackson said, although a return Wednesday against Charlotte or Friday against Memphis appeared possible. Gasol has missed five games because of a sprained left ankle.

Another 7-footer, Chris Mihm, will begin practicing later this week after reporting no pain since having a screw removed last month from his surgically repaired right foot. Andrew Bynum (left knee) is still at least two weeks away from returning, and Trevor Ariza (right foot) is not expected back until the playoffs begin.

I guess I am wrong on the poll. I thought Mihm was going to return first. But it is good to have some big guys out there. Ronny did great and I can't believe how he hung in there. When he gets back to his position, he will be a force. He just needs to shoot instead of passing up good shots.

Been following this site for a while, and am now a member. Quick question for you all. Considering that the teams will have to announce their active rosters before playoffs begin, and if Ariza is not ready for the first round, is it possible to modify the roster after the playoffs start, removing somebody and replacing with Ariza? Or, do we think that if the Lakers are confident that he will be available for the playoffs that they simply add him to the roster straight away?

Lakers' rehabs are center of attention
    By Elliott Teaford, Staff Writer
Article Last Updated: 03/24/2008 03:33:50 AM PDT

Pau Gasol might be ready to practice later this week.

Chris Mihm hopes to join him.

Andrew Bynum's return might take another two to three weeks, but the Lakers could have two of their three 7-foot centers sound enough to practice by the end of the week. And that's a significant improvement over recent days and nights.

Gasol has been sidelined since spraining his right ankle March 14.

He sat out Sunday's home game against the Golden State Warriors and probably won't make the trip for the rematch tonight in Oakland.

Mihm last played Dec. 23, but hopes he's cleared his final hurdle.

He had a screw from an earlier surgery removed last month and has been moving without the debilitating pain that forced him to the sidelines.

Bynum continues his rehabilitation work, but there's no firm date for his return to the practice court. He injured his left kneecap Jan. 13.

It's possible he could return to the active roster before the playoffs start April 19.

Ronny Turiaf made his fifth consecutive start in place of Gasol on Sunday. Turiaf scored 10 or more points in three of his previous four starts. He also had six assists in victories Thursday over Utah and Friday over Seattle.

"Ronny has played really well for us in a supporting role," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "His activity is good. We've been fortunate. Ronny has been able to get through most of this pretty well."

    Turiaf is likely
    Advertisement
to return to a reserve role once Gasol is fit to play, which Jackson said would be next week at the latest.

"We're hoping he'll be back on the floor this week, Tuesday maybe or Thursday, hopefully," Jackson said. "I'm not going to say one game or the other right now. It's just a matter of ... how much he can endure."

Gasol probably will remain the starting center when Bynum is ready to play again, although Jackson said he plans to play them together at times.

    More on Mihm

Mihm admitted he returned to the court faster than he would have preferred during the offseason. He underwent two ankle surgeries that sidelined him for all of last season and pushed too hard because he was a free agent and needed a place to play. He played in pain until Dec. 23, when he finally took a seat. Now, after having a surgical screw removed, he's hopeful he can play pain-free. "There's been so many steps along the way where I've been optimistic," Mihm said. "Hopefully, this is the last hurdle and I'll just push myself to get back in shape and get some explosion back in my legs and be able to help this team out whatever way I can here at the end of the season and in the playoffs."

    Ariza update

Trevor Ariza has been working out on an elliptical exercise machine, but said he hasn't tried to run yet on the Lakers' new $75,000 treadmill, which simulates low gravity conditions. Ariza has been out since breaking his right foot Jan. 17.

Phil saying Bynum wont start reminds me of when Kwame was about ready to return from his injury and Phil was saying he might place Bynum back on the bench and start Kwame for his "physical play". I thought this plan was one of the dumbest things i had ever heard. But Bynum played so well Phil had to scrap this inane plan.

Drew is by far the best player we have to play center. No knock on Pau, but he is a forward and cant carry Drews shoes at center even at this early stage in Drew's career because of Drews ability to block shots and rebound.

Phil should play Drew at starting center as soon as he gets back. When he gets winded you take him out and move Pau or Mimm into the slot. It's that simple!!!

Sometimes Phil does things that make you think he's a real idiot or smoked too much weed.

He has how many rings? How many do you have? If Phil thinks Bynum should come off of the bench at first then I accept and agree with him.

As ong as we get somthone back, we are so thin in the middle and with Turiaf in foul trouble last night things got ugly untill we got comfortable playing small ball with the Warriors.

    That's illogical. Every game's different.

I agree with Phils decision to play byno of the bench. It's better to let the Pau play center cuz he'll have less doubts in his mind as to his medical condtion, whereas andrew might question his confidence in his knee when he comes back. I would rather let drew come off the bench and do some damage against bench scrubs and let the kid get his confidence back up. He is the best player we have at center but we don't have very tough competition down the stretch so theres no need to have to start him

remember Byno has been swimming and running on the expensive treadmill which means he is not in NBA game shape. He needs to be coming off the bench coming back no question. At any rate Byno will probably only get 20-25 minutes per game coming back regardless.

Yea the treadmill is 70,000 bucks because it makes you run your own weight.

GriZZLy, Phils nine rings are a great achievement. Of course like any coach, without the great players he's had, he would have as many rings as i do-none. But having rings does not make one infallable. Phil has made mistakes too. Like his original desire to start Kwame before Bynum forced him not to. Like playing Luke down the stretch last night agains Golden State instead of Vlade and almost costing us the game. Like in his book when he said Kobe was uncoachable and he would need him traded if he every coached the Lakers ag
