| Our team is headed for a great, strong end. The Lakers stand at 48-21 as of March 21,2008 and are first place in the West. However, what do we lack? In the offseason, our team will go through some changes and we might not see the players that we like back on the team for the 08-09 season. Ronny Turiaf and Sasha are going to be free agents. What is our team need? A 3rd string PG? A better backup SG? A backup C? |

| We have all the pieces, we just need for our players to improve in certain areas. |

We might need to get a 3rd string PG because Fisher is getting older and might not be able to play a whole season...Farmar will be the starter, but he shouldn't have to play 40+ minutes per game if Fisher is out...
I feel that if Sasha is resigned, the SG position will be in great shape...
In my opinion, there are just too many strong forwards on this team...Ariza, Walton, & Newble all play SF...and now Odom is suppose to be the starter and Radman also plays some SF...the Lakers should look to trade one of them, and sadly for me, it will most likely be Walton...Newble is on a 10 day contract, so it's still unsure whether he'll be here next year or not...
The PF position, in my opinion, is the one position that is set...wow, did I actually say that...at the beginning of the season, the PF spot was the one that needed the most work, now it's the one that needs the least amount of work...now, that's only if Turiaf if back next year...
The center position is tricky...the Lakers better have Bynum back next year, but who's gonna be his backup...Mihm is never healthy and might not be a Laker next year and Mbenga is on a 1 year contract...I think the Lakers need to find a backup center who is healthy and has some skill, whether offensively or defensively...who knows, maybe the Lakers will resign Kwame Brown this offseason for the MLE, or half of the MLE, depending on what he's worth...
That's how I see the team and what I feel it needs for next season, but for right now, I'm just gonna let this season finish...and then after that see how deep the Lakers can go in the postseason...and then I'll start thinking about what the Lakers should do... |

Very nice points kb24_4life. I agree for the most part that the 2, 3 and 4 positions are now ok. Its the PG and the C position that we need to address. Jordan Farmar will be our point guard of the future for sure, but who will back him up when Fish decides to hang up his sneaks? If we get a chance in the draft, we might get another good point guard, maybe Farmar's fellow UCLA Bruin, Darren Collison? For the C position, Andrew has this spot locked for years to come. Again, its the backup that we don' have. Maybe we can sign a free agent in the offseason, maybe a Diop or Elson will do?
I feel that if everybody is healthy, the Lakers are the leagues strongest team next season. Just don't let those injuries com up again. |

Good Points cited guys, here's my take:
I've always to do a post on this one but I somehow wanted to know how Lamar, Pau and Drew will gel together. The opinion will have to wait, but I would like to indicate a few points that we need to address regardless of how they will perform as a group.
1. 3rd string PG - is actually our most daunting need considering that we are a Fisher sprained ankle away from disaster on the PG spot. Most teams esp good ones have atleast 3 PGs. Farmar is a very good PG but he is a sophomore. Some nights he is the league's best energy PG and some nights, well... a sophomore.
famous choices: Sun Yue from China, 08 2nd estimated to be #57.
my choices:
Tyronn Lue - he will only have to undergo a remembering curve so it gives him an edge to blend in rather than teaching a pure point to play it the Tri way. He is also a decent defender and now a veteran.
Carlos Arroyo - he is a veteran and Puerto Rico's National Team captain. I think he would blend in well with some nice threes and ball distribution. Plus, he speaks Spanish!
2. Wing defender - we got Trevor Ariza and adding one more won't hurt.
famous choices: Ira Newble, Gerald Green, Ron Artest.
my choices:
trade for Shane Battier (but don't ask me how)
3. Backup Center - yes DJ can give you 5 good minutes but we need someone who could play solid 15.
famous choices: DJ Mbenga, Chris Mihm.
my choices:
DeSagana Diop - Diop is a restricted FA but he might be tempted to sign here for those meaningful defense and some blocks.
Kwame Brown - seriously. He is utterly the most notorious choice but he could be the solution to this locker room's depth at center. Now I would take him for 1 million.
4. Shooting Guard - one that shoots... you know... the three ball.
famous choices: Sasha Vujacic, Coby Karl, JR Smith.
my choices:
The Machine, Son Of George.
5. Bruiser Forward - energy player who rebounds and hustles on D. Perfectly impersonated by Ronny Turiaf. Re-sign him at all costs. |

Diop would be a nice pick up for LA in the off-season. He is actually an unrestricted FA this summer.
Arroyo may not be bad either. I do not see Coby, DJ, or Ira on the team next year and I think we have 'Bird' rights on Turiaf and Sasha, but I could be wrong.
Ariza can make it easy by picking up his player option for next year at $3M. |

Like all championship level teams, no major changes are needed. Look at the Spurs and their roster. It hasn't changed much. Look at the Pistons, their roster hasn't changed much either. The Lakers has all the right pieces, some would say the Lakers have a little too much that would leave Jim Buss holes in his wallet. The major thing is to keep the squad healthy. Because when I finally see Gasol, Bynum, Odom, Kobe, and Fisher playing together, there will be major damage. How do you not win 70 games a season with that?
Top that off with a
- 3 point threat Sasha ( I called it) (which I would see as a starter on another team)
- Perimeter/ Slasher defender specialist in Ariza (started some games this season)
- Your starting point guard on the bench Farmar
-Ronnie Turiaf - High energy, and can get you tons of blocks in a few minutes
-Vlad Radmonavic - finally getting his shot down again, and also a starter for the Lakers.
-Walton, playing with a broken bone in his ankle, next year, after surgery, he should be stepping it up again. also once a starter.
Thats a terrific bench without mentioning the final 5 players! The roster would be better than the celtics, plus a bench with depth!
The achellies heel of the Lakers this season has always been DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE. But, the Lakers never had the oppurtunity to test out the roster at full capacity. I mean, if it was Gasol, Bynum, Odom, Kobe, Fisher, there would be no probablem. Not even perimeter D. Which seems to be the killer even starting back from the exhibition games in Hawaii where Azubuke was left unguarded hitting all those threees. That and point guard penetration. But with two seven footers and a 6'11' wide framed Odom, the driving lanes would be closed. Sorry. |
