NEW ORLEANS — Kobe Bryant was hindered during All-Star weekend by his injured right pinkie.
The Los Angeles Lakers star sat out the West squad's All-Star practice Saturday, pulled out of Saturday night's Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout and played limited minutes in Sunday's All-Star Game.
But he was one of the All-Stars who traveled in small groups Friday afternoon to various points-in-need in this still-rebuilding city, though he was one of the few who didn't get his hands dirty, either literally or figuratively.
But his purple, gold and white Nikes? They got plenty dirty.
Bryant didn't seemed to mind a bit. He watched earnestly as Habitat for Humanity workers, the real pros in this project, labored to restore and rebuild houses in the badly damaged eastern part of the city, along Wilson Avenue, ravaged nearly 21/2 years ago by Hurricane Katrina.
For nearly an hour, in a light but steady rain, he spoke to residents who had been displaced, listened intently to their stories and almost sheepishly accepted their heartfelt thanks-so-much-for-helping-us comments.

As far as actual work, he was able at least to provide "moral support," to his fellow players.
"I stayed away from the hammer," Bryant said with a grin, "but I was able to kind of lay down some of the wood and kind of set the table for Chris (Paul) and (Amare) Stoudemire to put the nails in."
For the most part, the players' true work-related contributions were minimal but nonetheless brought added awareness to the plight of many parts of the city.
Bryant has done this type of thing several times since Katrina, and he's still amazed by a couple of things, one of which is the extensive damage.
The other?
"The one word I think about when I think about New Orleans is 'resiliency,' " Bryant said. "You know, the citizens being able to fight through adversity, and be able to stay here and help the rest of the country kind of rally around this city.
"… We're all in this together."
About 150 NBA legends were also out in force during All-Star weekend. During one of the several events sponsored by the National Basketball Retired Players Association, Moses Malone, Elgin Baylor and Lenny Wilkens were among the former players who gave groceries to families in east New Orleans.
Bryant and the other All-Stars on hand, as well as Boston Celtics coach and East All-Stars coach Doc Rivers, chatted easily on the nearly empty bus en route to the construction site. With Rivers plopped down on the seat in front of Bryant, and Celtics star Paul Pierce directly behind him, the three traded stories and chuckles for most of the half-hour ride from the team hotel made difficult by traffic.
But as the scenery outside their windows began to change, so did the tone of their conversation. For a minute or so, there was just near silence and sad shakes of the head.
"Man," Pierce said softly.
"Yep," Bryant replied.
"Mm, mm, mm," Rivers said.
Later, as he stood in the rain, Bryant said he and other players had no problem whatsoever interrupting All-Star weekend for this particular endeavor.
"We could easily just sit in the hotel room getting ready for the game and telling the media things that are required and just kicking back," he said, "but we're out here, we're putting in the work, and we're doing the things to help people in a positive way."
If some players assigned to other spots around the city did complain about having to take part in this effort in miserable weather, such sentiments weren't evident before or afterward on the bus carrying Bryant and his fellow volunteers.
After Bryant and Pierce returned to the bus for the ride back to the hotel, they reflected on what they had witnessed. "They've still got a long way to go, man," Bryant said. "They've done some good work but still got a long way to go."
From a somber Pierce: "No doubt. No doubt."

that's not true. this article is on NBA.com right now.
i think we're taking our laker bias a lil too far. kobe does get a lot of negative press, but it's been getting better.
just hope the lebron madness will die down once the lakers win the championship this year ^^ |
