Yesterday Coby Karl got sent down to the D-League, and with all the rumors still out there about a possible trade, it made me wonder if this was a move that will precede a trade. By sending Karl down to the D-League we free up another roster spot. I'm not saying that anything is going to happen, and I hope nothing does, but anything is possible.

I was trying to think what trades would bring back an additional player, and I could only think of a trade of Artest for Lamar. We would have to bring on another player from the Queens to make it work.

Farmar went to the D-League a couple of times last season, so this may be nothing. We all know Coby is not going to play much at all in the Laker games, so this may be an excuse to get him some playing time.

    What do you guys think?

Probably just trying to give Coby some playing time that he can't get on the Lakers right now. Maybe, they are trying to boost ticket sales in the D-League. I don't believe sending a player to D-League opens up a roster spot as Coby is still under contract with us. I have read from various sources that the Lakers may not be done trade wise. At this point, it seems any trade would have to revolve around shopping Lamar with the purpose of bolstering our defense. Nothing else makes sense. I still think we are done this season with trades but it doesn't hurt for the Lakers to listen just in case.

You're right it never hurts to listen. I'm really hoping that we keep the team we have. I don't see how AK47 or Artest improve our team.

You are correct. I did a couple of quick google searches and found that even though you send a player to the d-league he still counts as a man on your roster. I apologize for the confusion.

Not for the Lakers...the Lakers own their D-League team and they can't be picked up by other teams...I think the Spurs also own their D-League team also...if it was like that for the Lakers, then somebody would have snatched Farmar last season...Coby Karl was already at the D-League earlier this season, and did pretty good...with the Lakers only playing him in blowouts, it was a good move to send him back to the D-League...

I doubt that this move means anything pertaining to trades. I think they just want to get him some minutes. He is a dangerous outside shooter and they're probably hoping he can be sharp in case he's needed in limited minutes down the stretch, as well as gain experience for the future. I'm not reading too much into it...but you can never know for sure.

They're just giving him some PT so he can expand his game... just like Farmar last year...

For a guy who coach says is there best prlific shooter in practice is only hitting 12% from the floor in regular games and 26% overall. Curretnly, he can not help us at all. So anything that they try to get him going during games is fine by me, because right now, it doesn't matter if he is on our bench or not. We still have an open roster spot to fill either way. So I guess a trade could be coming, but if we do not trade before the deadline, expect them to sign a free agent or D league player to fill that spot based on need. Need is mostly dictated by all the injuries. That is because our roster is already stacked. We just have 3 players out due to injury. Maybe 4 if Kobe goes under the knife. Sasha, welcome to the starting lineup if that happens.

The dude has taken 15 total shots this entire year in 41 TOTAL minutes. Get off the kids back. He's averaged 18pts in the D-League, so of course he can play, he just needs minutes.

Gilly stop acting as if you can see the future of a shooter who's never had the opportunity to show himself. You don't have a clue about what this guys going to able to do or not. Even PJ said he's probably the teams best shooter. So stop playing the psychic about this kids future.
He would not be on the Los Angeles Lakers if he didn't have talent.

lknight... okay so ur gonna sit here and say that when Von Wafer drops 40+ in the summer league and D-league so obviously he can play right? but guess what obviously he would be playin if he could play like most players in the NBA. Karl wont be anything in the NBA, and i never said he couldnt play he jus aint right 4 the NBA. EUROLEAGUE YES!

First off, let me drop a little bomb shell for you...
    COBY KARL AINT VON WAFER!!!!!!!
And since we're on this Von Wafer subject, let me drop another bomb shell....
VON WAFER WAS CUT FROM THE TEAM!!!!!(That should tell you something in itself)

Anyone with basketball knowledge and someone who's actually watched Coby play knows why he's on the team. He's a great shooter with great basketball IQ. He's definetley going to be on a roster wherever he goes because shooters are hard to find. Everybody knows "Dunkers" and just plain athletes like Wafer can be found every three blocks at a local park. Shooters on the other hand are rare and needed, which is why Carl is on our bench now. I'm sure you thought players like Paxton, Kerr, Sasha, Kapono etc were going to be nothing as well huh? Or what about Matt Carroll?? Another D-Leaguer who beat out all those so called athletes and made his way to an NBA roster....why you ask...because he's a shooter.

Gilly, you haven't contributed one decent post yet, at least that I've seen. You don't even know that you can't post trade ideas on the main board. Get it together and show a little respect for those who have been here a lot longer than you like lknight.

I think they sent Coby Karl to the D-League cuz he SUCKED! LOL!! but seriously, he can be a reallly good player with enough playing time. like a poor man's Luke walton.

If they trade, How about Karl for Navarro from the Grizzlies? Ya know, Gasol's old buddy? Their salaries match up. That will make Gasol happy.

Now would be a good time to trade Coby Karl for Navarro, if that rumor was true...he can light it up from outside every once in a while...and if Kobe gets the surgery he needs, & hopefully he will, the Lakers will have another player to help them win games...
