EL SEGUNDO
In his first season with the Lakers, Josh Powell could be found hanging around the basket, collecting rebounds and taking mostly low-percentage shots.APTOPIX NBA Finals Lakers Basketball
This season, Powell can be found wandering away from the paint, patrolling the perimeter and even taking a few shots from 16 feet out. Why the change?
Powell said after watching the ebbs and flows of games from his spot on the bench, he realized that he could help spread the offense by venturing further out. So he tried it a few times and quickly earned Phil Jackson’s trust.
“That’s one of Josh’s strengths. He a good spot up shooter and he’s proved that to us over time,” Jackson said. “I think he’s confident and he has been real good for us of the bench this year.”
Powell, who is averaging 5.7 points and 2.3 rebounds, said his outside shooting (he has made 1 of 2 3-pointers this season) is simply a matter of trying to fit in.
“I like to play. I love to play,” he said, a rare smile emerging. “And I will do whatever I can do be of value to the team.”

I like Josh Powell. He's a good player with range...
Given the minutes, the guy is a threat for a double-double or a threat to put borderline Pau numbers. I remember when he started for us against Houston (Lamar suspended), he put up 17-9 in 35 minutes.
...and he's our garbage man. Sweet! He's a very humble guy and as you read, is a team-first player. |

| Another nice thing about Josh, is that he's a solid rebounder. |

If by "defense" you mean shot blocking like Mbenga, then you will likely be sorely disappointed. Josh Powell is a respectable position defender, and on offense he has a nice jump shot, but he's not really a consistent shot-blocker.
Remember, one doesn't have to get a ton of steals or blocks in order to play what is considered "good defense". One simply needs to move his feet, contest shots, attack the defensive backboards, and position oneself in the best position to force a low percentage shot opportunity from the offensive player. You can accomplish those things on defense without necessarily being a great pickpocket or shot-blocker as Kobe has demonstrated throughout his entire career.
Furthermore, I firmly believe that shot-blocking and steal statistics can be very deceptive masks for otherwise poor defensive players. Take Chris Paul for instance; he's among the best players in the NBA at getting steals, but is he really a great defensive player? I would argue that he is not. He's a great pickpocket but I've found that he is not particularly adept at stopping or even slowing down the player he is guarding throughout a game.
The same might be said for Dwight Howard, the current reigning defensive player of the year. He's clearly an incredible shot-blocker but is he really a top notch position defender in the post? He didn't seem to slow Pau Gasol down all that much in the NBA finals, so you could argue that Dwight Howard still has room to improve in his own defensive game. That's why defensive statistics can be inaccurate and unreliable indicators for who and who isn't a good defender in the NBA. |

| Josh has become one of my favorites since last year because she he has always shown consistency on his jumper and he doesn't ever give up on plays he is an example of a good team player. I hope he starts to get more minutes and continues to be successful in our team |

| Relive: Last time I checked you can't get a double-double with ten points and ten fouls. After six fouls you're disqualified. |
