LOS ANGELES - Ron Artest revealed Sunday night that the relative calm that has settled around him in recent months is no accident. He said he enlisted the help of a sports psychologist while with the Houston Rockets last season.
"The main thing is that I can sense when something's wrong, and when I need to figure it out, I go down and talk to her," Artest said an hour or so before the Lakers faced the Clippers in an exhibition game at Staples Center.
"I was trying to figure it out," he added. "A lot of people said, `You need a therapist or whatever.' My problems came from on the court. How are we going to talk about that? How do I find answers about that?
"When I lose, I used to hate it so much. I found a way, not to accept it but to deal with it."
Artest's anger has flashed in spectacular fashion at times in his career, most notably during the so-called Malice in the Palace brawl in Auburn Hills, Mich., in November 2004 that resulted in a league-record 73-game suspension.
It was an episode that followed Artest in each of his stops in the NBA, from Indiana to Sacramento to Houston and now to Los Angeles.
Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy alluded to it when asked Sunday how the signing of Ar- test to a five-season, $34-million contract during the offseason changed the Lakers.
"He gives you more, but, obviously, there is the question that he has had a past of some indiscretions," Dunleavy said. "I don't think it'sprobably going to be an issue for them. I think from everything I've read, the guy's mindset seems to be pretty good."
Indeed, Artest appears to be overjoyed to have joined the defending NBA champion Lakers after many seasons toiling with fair to middling teams such as the Bulls, Pacers, Kings and Rockets.

| Hey, Whatever works as long as you get better. As soon as Ron artest gets his groove and learns the system we will unbeatable. I know his off the court antics are crazy and strange, but on the court he handles himself well and he is 100% focused on the game. Im glad kobe is the captain though, because i think he can really control artest. |

| who cares what he does off the court as long as he doesn't get in trouble with the law. He dress up in a wedding dress like Dennis Rodman. Doesn't matter, because you know no matter what, the guy is gonna bring it every night on the court. |

What do you exactly see in Ariza other than "potential"???? He might become a bust this season itself!! And Ron actually upgraded our SF position. The only thing that's going against him, and Kobe, is TIME.........they are in their 30s while Ariza is 25? Ariza is now on a downward spiral. He won't be getting open shots.......and considering his pre-season performances, its already showing. |

| ssnk_kb24: You obviously know ZERO, about basketball. When your building a team, you want 2-3 super star players, preferably a dominant big man and great penetrating guard. Then you want guys who can defend and make hussle plays... in otherwords.. glue guys.. Which is what Ariza is. The guy never complain, was very quiet, never was an attention whore or searching out TMZ. He made big play after big play during the playoffs. Remember the 13 points he scored in the 3rd quarter of game 4 in the finals. How easily we forget. Remember the clutch defensive plays he made not to mention the clutch 3's he made and he didnt even look scared. Now When you find a guy that isnt afraid to take that shot, why the hell get rid of him... he is 24!!! Artest cant stay infront of players anymore and you will see this as the season progresses. |

Urkle, you're a funny guy, I gotta admit. But seriously, after last season, taking Laker basketball advice from you is like taking advice from an 8-ball. It's just, umm, nonsense
ssnk_kb24, I agree with you. Ariza was all potential. Yes, he made huge plays, I haven't forgotten, but regardless, Artest is still better for this team. Come on, the Lakers still only have 2 super star players. Bynum is not a super star, so the Lakers are doing good in the "required" amount of super star players. |

I agree that Ariza had potential but I don't think the lakers are interested in what -could-be three four years from now.... they want championships and Artest is currently the better player, I don't think there can be any argument in that. Artest is slower but Ariza couldn't guard the strong guys and the FO probably is thinking Phil can put Kobe on the smaller quicker SFs and Ron Ron can Guard the stronger ones. I don't see why all the fuss about Ron though... he gives us exactly what we needed in the past: a tough nosed defensive player... and a wing guy who can create shots for himself (Other than Kobe)... sure he's a bit crazy but we were getting kinda boring last year... we could use a little Crazy.
That old addage 2-3 superstars to win a championship hasn't happened in like the last 20 years... examples: Chicago won with only MJ and Pippen, houston won it with Hakeem and Clyde the Glide (Was Cassell a supe star in those days?), Spurs won their first with Duncan and Robinson, and then others with Duncan and Parker (Is Ginobli a superstar?) The 2000 lakers with only Kobe and Shaq, and 2009 Lakers with just Kobe and Gasol... especially with the way the Players union does their contract I don't think any team will be able to afford 3 superstars... yeah boston had their big three but only because those superstars were towards the end of their careers.
don't worry... the Lakers will be fine. |
