I am shocked and dismayed at this demonstration of intolerance by the people on this site!!!!!!!!!

We should all be filled with admiration because everybody can find a place to post their opinions on the web, even the profoundly retarded.

There is a reason why Iverson is called the "Black Hole of Basketball"! Once a ball is attracted into his gravitational field, no one ever sees it again...

I agree with Gemfow. This is just another rediculous story from a writer that is trying to make something out of nothing. More BS about Odom. Lamar already knew that he would be coming off the bench when Pau returned. Happy or unhappy that was his fate anyway.

PatrickDelapaz: Hold up, usually I don't try to shoot down someone but I see a lame duck of a statement. How can you say Jordan needs to have his number retired and he has done this, that and the other when your page says you're 21? That tells me that you were 4 when he came into the league. That also tells me that you were seven when he won his first championship, you were nine after his first three rings. I'm sorry but you saying that he deserves to have his jersey retired by the league doesn't sound right to me because you grew up during an era of 90's basketball where there were games of 65-70 scores at the ends of games, where basketball was starting to go down again.

In all actuality where did Jordan actually take the league? After Magic and Bird retired the league started going down at the hands of Jordan. It's not entirely Jordan's fault but really the people, us fans were more excited about Jordan than we were about basketball and the teams themselves. So we started coming with the era of drafting super athletes with the hopes of them developing into a player like Jordan who combined athleticism with a strong will and fundamentals, we ended up with a league full of unfulfilled promises, players who couldn't shoot but could dunk. We ended up with a league full of one on one basketball and the teams sufferred and that's why scores were so low. I can say one thing that happened to bring the NBA back a little was the implementation of zones by Stern and crew, scores went up, the pg came back to basketball, people became interested in team play again.

How can you put Jordan up against anyone else when you have missed some of the best eras of basketball? If you're wearing Hanes, drinking Gatorade and watching Space Jam in a pair of Jordans then I would say you've had Jordan marketed to you and you were caught up in the machine.

... But the real crux of it is that illegal-defense rules in his era enabled Jordan to dominate absolutely in isolation on the wing – an option the NBA's legalized zones took away from Bryant.

Not a kobe/Jordan debate but this does beg the question....

People always say that kobe wouldn't have done as good in the 90s becuase all the physical play. I wonder how well young MJ would have done if he had to face a zone defense in the NBA, especially since in his young days he didn' thave teammates he trusted... Teams grounded in fundamentals, like the Utah Jazz of the mid 90s, would have had more success in containing MJ.

Quote:

Sorry for what will be a brief report from Friday afternoon's practice in El Segundo, but it's nearly Mom K's birthday, and that gift won't buy itself. I need to do a little shopping this afternoon. But I digress... There are two bits of genuine news to report. First, Andrew Bynum didn't practice, but instead received treatment on the ankle he turned in Thursday's win over Chicago. It included lasers, and while they were mounted on the heads of neither sharks nor sea bass, they ought to help reduce swelling in the area. He expects to play Sunday against Oklahoma City.

Pau Gasol, who made his season debut last night, did practice, working through the natural soreness that comes with the first game after a long layoff. He was quick to note, as you'll see in the videos below, that none of said aches were located in the bum right hamstring that kept him out of the season's first 11 games.

Click below for today's moving pictures...

Two from Pau. First he talks about how he feels physically after last night's run and his impact on the team. Then after we all left that really, really dark room, he discussed ways in which the differences between playing with Ron Artest and Trevor Ariza impact how he operates on the floor.

Phil Jackson discusses Gasol's impact, and why he put the team through a practice today. The goal is to continue pushing this team to excel, rather than getting content with simply being very good. Also, earlier in the week, AK posted comments from Derek Fisher, among which was the contention that one way the Lakers could best help integrate Ron Artest into the offense is to consistently run it correctly, because he's relying on teammates to do their jobs so he can effectively learn his. I asked PJ if the return of Gasol helps facilitate that sort of thing. His first answer responds to a question of whether he's surprised Gasol fit in so well again in only one game with limited practice.

Then Gasol quickly added: “Not in the hamstring.”

Gasol was just feeling like an everyman after not exercising for too long and then getting caught up in a game at the gym: achy all over.

Phil Jackson acknowledged he normally would’ve given the team the day off Friday if not for Gasol having just returned. Jackson said the practice was meant to “keep pushing the envelope of what we’re capable of — not settling for being that good.”

Quote:

On the five year anniversary of the Brawl at the Palace, Artest regrets the fine most of all.

It doesn’t matter how well he has fit in with the Lakers, what a good citizen he has been. For some, the image of Ron Artest will always be him in the stands going after a fan in the Bawl at the Palace.

Which was five years ago yesterday. What does Artest remember about it? The punishment. He would like some of the $5 million he lost during a 73-game suspension back.

"I put it behind me immediately because I did nothing," Artest said. "(Disgraced referee) Tim Donaghy was refereeing that game. That's another reason why I should get a couple of million back. Take some things into consideration and just give me some money back…

"I didn't bring no controversy to the stands, the stands brung it to me," Artest said Thursday night. "So that's what's frustrating to me still to this day, is that I didn't start it."

For those who don’t remember the endless replays on ESPN and every other national television outlet, the fight actually started on the court when Artest, then a Pacer, gave a hard foul to the Pistons’ Ben Wallace. Wallace took exception and pushed Artest back and an NBA version of an on-court fight took place — a lot of pushing and posturing without any actual punches being thrown.

In the middle of all of this, Ron Artest walked over and laid down on the scorer’s table. Just laid there and let everyone else get worked up. One of the people who got worked up was Pistons’ fan John Green, who threw a beer on Artest. That set Artest off, he went into the stands to go after the perpetrator. Other Pacers followed him in and went after Pistons fans as well, and that's where punches were thrown.

David Stern frowns on NBA players punching their fans. Artest was suspended the rest of the season, 73 games, without pay. The pay, that’s the part he really regrets (although he added that it was at least good the money went to charity and helped people).

Ron Artest said he hasn’t changed — he’s still getting Chinese figures cut into his hair, he’s still real, he’s still from the ‘hood. In his time with the Lakers — where he is not the Alpha Dog in the locker room — he has come off as a bit out there but more mature, like a guy who just turned 30, not 25. Like a guy who has figured out his place and feels comfortable with it. Like a guy who realizes $5 million is a lot of money.

But I wouldn’t throw a beer on him to test that theory.

Question: How many articles, updates and notes have been made about Pau Gasol's hamstring in the last month and change?

Answer: 1,230 (roughly).

OK, maybe that's a bit heavy, but to the collective pleasure around L.A.'s practice facility - from Kobe Bryant to Phil Jackson to Gasol himself - it appears that Pau will return to the starting lineup when the Chicago Bulls come to town on Thursday.

"I felt great today and don't see any reason I shouldn't be able to play tomorrow," said Gasol. "I think the muscle is healed."

Gasol was not limited in any way in Wednesday's practice, and has successfully made it through a full week's worth of work without any residual pain. Jackson said that he'll insert Gasol into the starting lineup since "we want to go to that, the sooner we get to it the better," and that his playing time will depend upon what kind of shape he's in.

"His conditioning will dictate that," Jackson said.

Jackson and Gasol also exchanged quips (or barbs) about their respective performances on the T-Mobile commercial and "CSI: Miami," all in good fun of course.

Quote:

While capturing his fourth NBA title this year, Kobe Bryant confidently reasserted his claim to being the best player on the planet. And as he pulls on an elite selection of peak-lapel suits, it's fair to say he's never looked better

Learning to Love Kobe

I've been a Kobe hater for as long as he's been in the NBA, since he was 9. We are legion, the Kobe haters, and if you count yourself among us, these have long been your talking points: He'll never get the Shaq monkey off his back. He can't get a team to jell around him. He's too selfish, too annoying with his haranguing on the court.

As this year made clear, none of that is true. What he is now is too great to be meaningfully despised. Is he a nice guy? Who knows? He keeps himself at an understandable remove. (One thing worth noting, though, is the $750,000 the Kobe Bryant China Fund has contributed since the earthquake. "They've always welcomed me there," he says. "So when that happened, there was no question. It was just the right thing to do.") What you now feel when you watch him on the court is that this may be the most sublime athlete you'll ever see. In the past, I've taken pleasure in two quotes, one from Phil Jackson, the Lakers' coach, and one from Tex Winter, longtime Jackson consigliere. Jackson described Kobe as "uncoachable," and Winter questioned whether Kobe had "ever listened to anyone."

"I take those comments as a compliment," Kobe said when I brought them up. "I'm not the type of guy who's going to jump over a wall just because you tell me to. I want to know the thinking behind it." Well, that's an admirable attempt to spin some negative press, I thought. And then he said, "Those guys both know how I think about the game. They know how I work. They know—" He paused here and then went on to a separate thought. It occurred to me that the point he was hovering on the lip of, I think, was that they basically know he's a genius. He just couldn't come out and say it—They know I'm as good, maybe better, than anyone who has ever played. You don't coach that.

It's true, you don't. If you're a true lover of the game, you don't fight it. You just acknowledge where it resides.
